Probably the best book by Misrach since The Beach. This new body of work is incredible. The large format of the book also helps. Highly recommended.

Hmm. The large format invited easy damage. Images just did not register with me. Gave the book away.

Lovely book. A bit larger than necessary but smaller may not conveyed Misrach's point. The photographs are all of people floating in the ocean, alone or with others. Isolation, loneliness and yet at the same time, life despite the odds in this vast universe. The book is not a little mysterious. And who doesn't like a good mystery?

Ilaria Capua is "Revolutionary Mind" for 2008. This acknowledgement was granted by "Seed Magazine". The American magazine of science and technology each year selects 5 leaders in the international scientific community who have most influenced our opinions on the world, the mind and the universe. In 2006 virologist Ilaria Capua was studying samples of avian influenza from Africa. The World Health Organization asked Capua to deposit the genetic sequence of one of her samples into a database to which only a select few laboratories had access. She balked. "I said, 'Wait a minute, we're talking about a serious potential threat to human health. We know very little about how this virus is moving. Not enough scientists have had the opportunity to look at this virus.'" So Capua opted to put the sequence in GenBank, an open-access database, where it was downloaded 1,000 times in a single week. Capua's small act of rebellion was just the spark for a much larger challenge to the system. She started speaking out at meetings, urging her colleagues to stop putting their bird flu data in private databases. She joined forces with Peter Bogner, a strategic consultant, and a number of other virologists to establish the Global Initiative on Sharing Avian Influenza Data (GISAID), a consortium that facilitates collaboration among researchers and requires members to make their work on the virus publicly accessible. Capua hopes the work she's done to open up bird flu research can serve as an example to scientists studying other infectious diseases. Jean-Claude Bradley, a chemist at Drexel University who coined the phrase "open-notebook science," agrees. This is a great book for shopaholics and the average shopper as well. I shopped at several of the shops listed and found them to be just as described. If you are planning a trip to Prague and like to shop, this is the book for you. I highly recommend it! The author is American but has lived in Prague for many years and really knows the city. She also gives excellent private tours!

All of Krysti Brice's books are excellent. She's a former New Yorker who lives and loves Prague and gives personal tours.Her tips are great, she left us coupons at our hotel (which was a wonderful gesture on her part), and I emailed her prior to my trip (A Tauck cruise from Prague to Budapest) with questions she quickly answered. I bought a beautiful art piece at Material in Old Towne Square and some modern crystal pieces at Erpet. All of the shops that interested me were wonderful and creative! You can't go wrong with this guide. There are great suggestions for all tastes and interests.

As the author of this book, I'm quite prejudiced about how good it is, of course. Here I just want to make sure that you know the title has changed from The End of Materialism (hardback, now out of print) with a little more introductory material, but basically it's the same as the out-of-print hardback. My goal here was to keep it available to those who like printed books, and have a better title. The End of Materialism is technically clever and accurate, but sounds too much like an accounting textbook or something... This is for those who want a better fit between their spiritual beliefs and modern science - something real is going on!But if you have the hardback, you don't need to get this too - unless you really like the cover, which I do!Charles Tart

As the author states, this book is a republication of his 2009 book, “The End of Materialism,” although some introductory material has been added. This review is based on my reading of the 2009 book.As Dr. Tart sees it, the world has been miraculously transformed by science and technology. This transformation has been very good in many ways, but the material progress has been accompanied by a shift in our belief systems, a shift that has resulted in the “partial crushing of the human spirit” by scientism. “[The] constant rechecking of ideas against observable reality is where scientism corrupts the essential scientific process,” he states. “Because people caught in scientism have an a priori cognitive and emotional attachment to a totally materialistic worldview, they won’t really look at the data about psi phenomena, OBEs, or NDEs, which imply a spiritual, nonmaterial side to reality. If forced to look at some of the data, they ingeniously try to ‘explain it away,’ to trivialize it so that it doesn’t really have to be dealt with.”Tart makes it clear that the problem is not a conflict between science, per se, and spirituality, but between scientism and spirituality. Scientism is, he says, a rigidified and dogmatic corruption of science. “As I’ve observed it in my career, and as I think psychologist Abraham Maslow would have agreed, science can be practiced in a way that makes it an open-ended, personal-growth system for the practitioner or one of the most effective and prestigious neurotic defense mechanisms available,” he explains.After exploring the philosophical and metaphysical aspects of consciousness, Tart devotes separate chapters to telepathy, clairvoyance (or remote viewing), precognition, psychokinesis, psychic healing, near-death experiences, out-of-body experiences, mediumship, after-death communication, and reincarnation.At the other extreme from scientism is religious fundamentalism. “The organizers of most religions make their theories into doctrines, too often doctrines that must be believed or you’ll be damned!” Tart observes, adding that “religions are too often taught with an attitude that you must not question the doctrines and that you’re a bad person if you do and you’ll be punished.”Tart, a professor emeritus of psychology at the University of California (Davis campus), has authored more than a dozen books, including 'Altered States of Consciousness' (1969) and 'Transpersonal Psychologies' (1975). This was my first read of an Oreos Slate book. I've got to day I did enjoy the book. Lots of action without the language many western have. I will definitely read more by him.

I admire anyone who can spin a yarn, but there are varrying levels of writing ability and this author has serious deficiencies in his writing skills. I would recommend that he take a class in creative writing and get some guidance, and hopefully inspiration, which is sadly lacking.

A great read for readers of western novels. I always liked Louis L’amour and his heroes. Cully seems to fit that mold. Looking forward to following his next episode.

This was a very good story. I liked Cully and will look forward to book 2 of this series. The only problem with this book is: It ended too soon!Thanks for an enjoyable read!

Good story. Lots of blood and gore, but that’s what you get with a western novel. It was a good read.

I thought the book was just OK. I tend to judge other Western writers against the books of C J Petit and this book does not come close. That is probably not fair since C J in my opinion is the best Western writer currently writing today.

Quick, rather amateurish story but ok read. Unfortunately poor or no proofing is an irritant.

Decent story. The hero is the quickest draw and wins in the end. That's really all I'm looking for in these westerns.
