Review

“A powerful and involving work of narrative history… You come away from Fear City with a clear sense of what was lost as New York left behind one set of priorities and embraced another.… This is a book that deserves an audience beyond New York City history buffs, and all the more so because of its relevance to our political moment. The young Donald Trump makes a brief cameo appearance as an icon of the new New York, a real estate mogul who leveraged his father’s connections and the city’s desperation into massive tax breaks, starving the city of badly needed revenues for education and other basic municipal functions as he developed properties for the rich. ―Jonathan Mahler, The New York Times Book Review“Fear City is the best account of the New York City fiscal crisis of the 1970s and, more than that, an indispensable contribution to understanding the rise of austerity economics and the long decline of the public sector. This is a history with huge implications for the remaking of American politics and economics in our time.”―Thomas J. Sugrue, author of Origins of the Urban Crisis“The remaking of New York City under cover of crisis was a prelude to what would become a global economic tidal wave. In zeroing in on this little-understood chapter of urban history, Fear City helps sheds much-needed light on a range of contemporary crises, from the starvation of public services amidst enormous private wealth to the rise of Donald Trump. Kim Phillips-Fein is a historian of the first order.”―Naomi Klein, author of The Shock Doctrine and This Changes Everything“Fair, thorough, incisive, and stylish, this is the best book to read not just on New York’s fiscal crisis of the 1970s, but about how bankers became our unacknowledged legislators ever since.”―Rick Perlstein, author of Nixonland and The Invisible Bridge“Before there was Reagan, before there was Thatcher, there was New York City’s fiscal crisis. Here we can see the blueprint for what has since been done to the entire world. This is the story of how the gears were shifted and the age of liberalism put into reverse, told with all the engrossing details, all the forgotten characters, and a memorable style.”―Thomas Frank, author of What’s the Matter with Kansas? and Listen, Liberal“A tour de force. If you want to find the roots of modern conservatism, don’t look in Louisiana, Arizona, or rural Wisconsin. Look in New York, and read Kim Phillips-Fein’s superb Fear City. New York in the 1970s, as Phillips-Fein compellingly shows, was the first sustained victory in the New Right’s long war against the New Deal. Extremely well written and impressively researched, Fear City is essential reading to understand how finance capital, real estate speculation, austerity budgeting, and punitive policing first came together to create the toxic politics of today.”―Greg Grandin, author of Fordlandia and Kissinger’s Shadow“Fear City provides the definitive account of the moment when New York City liberalism ran out of momentum and money, and the conservative reaction that has culminated in Donald Trump began. Phillips-Fein chronicles not only the tense dance with municipal bankruptcy but the largely forgotten efforts by ordinary New Yorkers to stop the legal coup by local and national elites. Lucid, elegantly written, full of new information, it belongs on the shelf of key books about the city, alongside The Power Broker, Gotham, and their like.”―Joshua B. Freeman, author of American Empire and Working-Class New York“This revealing narrative of New York’s transformation from working-class social democracy to the glittering home of fancy finance reminds us that behind the mask of austerity there always lurks a bitter politics of class.”―James K. Galbraith, author of The Predator State and Welcome to the Poisoned Chalice“The story of New York’s financial crisis in the seventies is really a story about the role of cities in America today. New Yorkers pride themselves on being cosmopolitan, on welcoming immigrants, on being willing to spend money on education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Kim Philips-Fein convincingly explains why that caused problems for the city in the past and why now we need New York values more than ever."―Joseph E. Stiglitz, author of Globalization and Its Discontents and The Price of Inequality“Paced like a thriller and extremely well written . . . Phillips-Fein narrates with almost cinematic flair, and by the time the credits roll, the significance of her accomplishment becomes clear. The book should be required reading for all those interested in the past, present, and future of democratic politics.”―Publishers Weekly (starred review)“Deftly recounts the clash between government entities and vested interests as New York struggled to cope with slashed social service . . . Given events since, New York’s crisis―and the author’s astute account of it―seems oddly timely . . . Sobering, smart reading with many pointed lessons for activists.”―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Ms. Phillips- Fein regards the pre 1975 New York City {NYC} as the liberal beacon of light in the U.S.A. for providing a plethora of services for its citizens that from the mid 1960's it could no longer afford but nevertheless continued to provide and even increasing the funding for many of them. The impression one gets from her narrative is that somehow the city should have continued to provide them despite facing increased and persistent budget shortfalls from the mid 1960's to the near Chapter 11 bankruptcy of 1975 - 76 and the continued budget shortfalls {despite the eventual Federal Bailout} right thru 1981- 82. The sheer political folly, fiscal irresponsibility and willful ignorance of facts of Mayors Robert Wagner, John Lindsey and Abe Beame and their fiscal comptrollers Abe Beame {under Wagner and Lindsay} and Jay Goldin are dispassionately detailed. The picture presented of them is that of myopic career politicians absolutely refusing to face that the reality of major population loss {700,000 + overwhelmingly the middle class}, declining revenues {despite higher & higher taxes !} a massively increased short and long term debt load and worrying more about being reelected which made any fiscal retrenchment or the cutting of services essentially impossible for them to contemplate. AND YET her sympathy seems to lean towards these same irresponsible leaders who recklessly borrowed money, overstated revenue projections and used every fiscal gimmick under the sun not to cut services - a very strange viewpoint !!!Mayor Abraham Beame comes off particularly poorly - he is presented by the author as an intellectual lightweight {both as comptroller and Mayor !!} an inept, blinkered and tone deaf old man who is PETULANT and ANNOYED that by the spring of 1975 the budget numbers cannot be fudged or manipulated any more, the banks have realized this and refused to fund / rollover any new N.Y.C. short term debt and that a fiscal reckoning has finally hit the fan !! He truly believed then and later that somehow the subsequent deep budget cuts for services should have and could have been avoided but how that would have been accomplished is not clearly defined BECAUSE he simply refused to believe that throwing more money out of the window than was being taken in thru the door truly mattered and that someone would {and should have} rode to the rescue for NYC's fiscal woes.Governor Hugh Carey and the NYC Municipal Unions along with the formation of the Municiple Assistance Corporation {MAC} are the unsung hero's of NYC avoiding the disgrace of bankruptcy. Their forced cooperation however reluctant and ad- hoc saved the city from immeadiate Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1975-76 giving it the breathing room to survive to fight another day. President Gerald Ford was 100 % right in his assessment of the fiscal incompetence, reckless overspending and over borrowing by the NYC liberal political establishment BUT only a small town political hack like President Ford would have considered allowing the largest city in the U.S.A. to go bankrupt and not think that the ramifications of that bankruptcy would not be an economic and political world shaking event. Despite being technically right in his rigid economic and moral terms President Ford was clearly wrong in the bigger overall picture and he was roundly criticized at home and abroad for his stance and rightly so. But to his credit, he was a major catalyst in forcing NYC to adjust its thinking and its priorities in order to get the federal bailout money it so desperately needed. In my opinion this would never have happened had he just forked over the bucks with no questions asked ! That President Ford was in a tough spot with his own reelection issues cannot be disputed.NYC facing bankruptcy in 1975 is an early prime example of the "too big to fail" syndrome that we would subsequently see and feel in gigantic detail during the 2007-2009 financial meltdown. The author 's chapters on how ordinary New York City citizens fought against the closing of schools, hospitals and fire houses in individual neighborhoods are lovingly detailed but they are beside the point however inspiring their stories may be. By 1975 NYC was in a deep decline economically, spiritually and morally as the July 1977 power failure / blackout would clearly highlight as the blackout brought out the worst in its Black and Hispanic neighborhoods. The Wanton, Unashamed, Brazen Looting and Destruction of commercial stores within their own communities, many of them owned by their neighbors and friends was made much worse by the fact that subsequently a significant percentage of the NYC media, political establishment, religious leaders and the national media would find reasons to excuse and even justify this orgy of criminal behavior, rioting, arson, theft and destruction. These were "the chickens coming home to roost" for the post 1975 NYC liberal establishment to ponder and digest. In my opinion the author leans toward having far more empathy for the looters than for those who were robbed and burned out of their business's and jobs. That bone and muscle were cut along with with the fat from NYC budgets for all city services from June 1975 on cannot be denied nor can the pain that these cuts would cause but they CAN BE EXCUSED because in order to save the city from the disgrace and even worse service cuts that filing for Chapter 11 would have entailed - what would have been the alternatives given the political realities of that time ?Two additional books to read in on the policies and players that brought NYC to it's 1975 catastrophe are "The Ungovernable City" by Vincent Cannato - a devastating revelation of limosene liberal John Lindsay's disastrous tenure as the NYC "Fun City" Mayor from 1965-73 and "The Streets were Paved with Gold" by Ken Auletta - a contemporary 1970's look at the fiscal crisis that highlights the mindset and disastrous descision making of NYC elected officials and in it he chronicles one particular incident that in 2018 seems almost surreal. Mr. Auletta describes a scene where Mayor Beame and Comptroller Goldin are in an darkened office late at night with an Albanian bookkeeper wearing a green eye shade poring over a ledger giving them the numbers of the what the cities on hand cash and liabilities are AND this bookkeeper was the only person that had the institutional knowledge to tell the Mayor and Comptroller of the largest city in the U.S.A. with a budget of 10's of billions of dollars where they stood financially. What a stinging indictment this is of the haphazard, crude and slipshod manner on how the NYC municipal government was monitoring and maintaining its fiscal budget. This book is an informative and concise read with the authors presentation of the key players, power brokers, how the MAC came to be and would function, the individual personnel drama's, how Chapter 11 was avoided and how NYC was radically transformed by all this drama is presented via a entertaining and easy flowing narrative. I give this book 4 stars - Recommended.

Excellent read. For a somewhat technical subject matter, it is a nice, easy, quick read that uses the fiscal crisis to frame a larger discussion about the role of government in social issues. A great history but also thought provoking on the very current issue of underfunded public pensions.

An excellent study in public policy and economic history of the United States of the 1970s. The author makes a great characterization of the cultural, political and economic aspects that a fiscal crisis can have on a city. Kim Phillips-Fein is obviously a liberal ideologically, which can be felt on who she blames for the crisis, e.g. the bankers, elite etc. That said though, the book is excellent and an important contribution to the history and economics of public policy in the united states since the 1970s. Four stars.

This book cronichles the near bankruptcy of New York City in 1975. This doesn't sound like the kind of material that would keep somebody up late at night because they got so involved that they wanted to finish the chapter, and then the next chapter. That's what happened to me. What more can you ask of any book?

Excellent history of the budget crisis and 1970s era New York. Deeply referenced with an outstanding level of historical detail. Very effectively profiles the players who helped the city avert bankruptcy and their various backgrounds and philosophies. If you want to understand the birth and development of modern-day gilded-city NYC you should definitely read this book.

After reading the first chapter - I could not put the book down. It's more than a book - it's a study.

It’s a shame that Kim Phillips-Fein’s masterly Fear City hasn’t received the expansive recognition it so justly deserves. Here, she has followed up on her previous, astute economic account, Invisible Hands, with another painstakingly researched yet engagingly written book.Fear City ostensibly deals with NYC’s mid-1970’s fiscal crisis. Yet what makes it a notable work of history, is the author’s discerning analysis of the event and her lucid explanation of how it ultimately served as a model for the national austerity state that emerged from the crisis; one which has spread far beyond the confines of New York City (e.g., the impending, let-them-eat-cake tax cut for the wealthy, and a shredding of the social safety net that is likely to follow). As she eloquently notes in the book’s Epilogue, the sorry legacy of the crisis is that:"...the American economy…was remade…on completely different terms. The idea of using the state to remedy poverty and improve socialconditions has given way to the sense that doing so is simply too expensive…The inequality that characterizes our society today seems tobe accompanied by the constant sense that any hope for a better society, any notion of collective action, must be a pipe dream---irresponsible, impossible to afford.”We are all much poorer since the advent of austerity politics and resulting policy. Yet, readers of Fear City will be deeply enriched by Professor Phillips-Fein’s astute and absorbing narrative.

Very good to read. Well done.

Oftentimes, we, women, tend to sabotage our own message by watering down our value so that we're not perceived as rude and arrogant. And so, we're sorry... How many times we hear, you're "overreacting", "too sensitive", "don't take it personally", "too emotional". On the contrary, if you're blunt honest and speak succinctly, you're an abrasive bitch. How to find this balance and not be either one or another? I worked with Fran Hauser for a decade in a very large and complicated organization where not one single person ever thought she was neither weak nor evildoer or villain while watching her rapid growth in business. She "killed them" with kindness, generosity, principles, and standards she set for herself and lived up to them, every day, every minute. This book is a signature collection of guiding principles that will help you reach entirely different heights in your business, the company you work for, or your relationships. In short, this book is the best piece of reading I have ever discovered after Dale Carnegie in terms of how to be successful, happy and make a lot of friends. The transformation will begin within and you will never have to apologize again. Give yourself this fantastic gift - you will never regret it.

What an important and powerful message to professional women that it is possible to be strong and successful while being nice. This book is packed with interesting stats and a ton of real-world examples making the advice insightful yet practical. Each chapter was like its own lesson, filled with real experiences and specific tips that are easy to pull out and start applying.A few highlights:• Fran highlights the importance of relationships that are built on a foundation of trust. “When you are creating opportunities, it’s essential to find the key stakeholders and bring them along with you. Make them a part of the process. By making it clear that you are looking to collaborate instead of compete, you’ll earn their trust and their respect.”• Look out for speech weakeners…i.e. don’t say “sorry” for no reason.• Develop evidence-based confidence to improve your ability to make difficult decisions• Set boundaries and spend your time wisely. Fran “performs an airplane view” where she looks at her calendar for the upcoming week to ensure her meetings, calls, etc. align to her priorities (both personal and professional) and when they don’t, she adjusts as needed. Fran also provides great tips for how to say “no” while maintaining strong relationships. This is an absolute must-read for women at all levels. My only wish is that I had this book earlier in my career!

LOVED this book! Drawing on both personal experience and research, Fran shows that not only do we not have to hide our “niceness” to succeed, but that the quality can actually serve as a superpower. Loved her take on rebranding the word nice to encompass kindness and empathy among other things. Nice does not necessarily mean you are a boring, opinion-less push-over. You can be nice *and* powerful, opinionated *and* kind. In a world where women are often branded one extreme or another (deferential or b**chy), Fran challenges our notions of what it means to be a female leader. I’m 20 years into my career and wish I’d had this book when I was just getting started. I can also think of several young women in my orbit who are launching their careers and would benefit from reading this!

This book is the wake up call that many women need to have! How many times have you been told to stop being 'nice' and to put on the tough girl facade to get further ahead in your professional life? But have you ever considered there may be another path than this hard line approach? Fran Hauser's 'The Myth of the Nice Girl' explains the value of being authentically nice using case studies and examples from her own impressive career to guide you on how to embrace your kindness and most importantly that "Kindness starts with you".For so long women have been influenced by the stories of many powerful women and how they rose to the top of their careers by being unapologetically assertive to get where they are. When you read this book you will find yourself remembering all the women you have ever worked with, especially those who were your boss, and be able to pinpoint those that were using the hard line approach vs. being authentically nice -- then decide for yourself what you think was effective, what wasn't, and how lucky you are to be learning these important techniques detailed in Fran's book now rather than later.Whether you are already a nice girl or someone that needs that wake up call "to stop leaving your kind and nurturing self at the door... and to start honoring your capacity for connection and relationships", do yourself a favor and order a copy for your yourself and then gift one to a special woman in your life.

I've never found a book about this topic that has hit so close to home. After reading this, I feel like I'm equipped with the right tools to succeed, without compromising my own values. I plan on recommending this book to both male and female coworkers; I think back to previous situations that I encountered with teammates of both genders, and wish that both parties (myself included!) managed them differently. Specifically, "distinguishing confidence from ego" is something that I believe we should talk about further in the workplace. One drives admiration, the other annoyance! So, the clarification is crucial, especially in team dynamics. This book gives me the hope, positive energy, and smart, strong negotiating ideas to push myself forward in a successful way in the future. I know that I'll continue to encounter similar experiences to my past, and am looking forward to leveraging the tenets of The Myth of the Nice Girl in those scenarios.Thank you, Fran Hauser -- I have pages of this book dog-eared, and will surely refer back to them frequently!

Was as expected. Was in excellent shape.

To encourage butterflies, one can design a garden especially to attract them. For details, try this book. Besides plants, they need water, maybe just a little puddle, and a place to bask in the sun. Another handsome book on the topic is Bird and Butterfly Gardens. It is such a treat when a hummingbird hovers just inches away from you. Its tiny wings make a whirring sound and they are such fun to watch.

From the Inside Flap

This thoughtful, fully accessible exploration of the creed, the list of beliefs central to the Christian faith, delves into its origins and illuminates the contemporary significance of why it still matters. During services in Christian communities, the members of the congregation stand together to recite the creed, professing in unison the beliefs they share. For most Christians, the creed functions as a sort of "ABC" of what it means to be a Christian and to be part of a worldwide movement. Few people, however, know the source of this litany of beliefs, a topic that is further confused by the fact that there are two different versions: the Apostle's Creed and the Nicene Creed. In "The Creed, Luke Timothy Johnson, a New Testament scholar and Catholic theologian, clarifies the history of the creed, discussing its evolution from the first decades of the Christian Church to the present day. By connecting the deep theological conflicts of the early Church with the conflicts and questions facing Christians today, Johnson shows that faith is a dynamic process, not based on a static set of rules. Written in a clear, graceful style and appropriate for Christians of all denominations, "The Creed is destined to become a classic of modern writings on spirituality.

I belong to a liturgical church and have known the Nicene Creed since I was a little girl in church listening to the grown ups recite the words. I think Mr. Johnson did a wonderful job exploring the background of the words and intent of those words, the history behind the words. What can never be explained, of course, is the feeling, the knowledge, the sense of correctness one feels when one, in church or alone, recites these words. The Nicene Creed is the holy history of the Christian. The author, Luke Timothy Johnson, does a great job of making the Creed accessable to those folks not raised with the Nicene Creed and gives some moments of reflection to those of us who were.

This is a very well written scripturally and historically based explanation of every statement of faith recited in the Nicene Creed. Johnson explicates not only the meaning and significance of the belief elements of the Creed, but also the scriptural history and the early Christian church history of why and how each statement came to be selected for this fundamental document of Christian faith.I particularly appreciate how the author captures the modern Christian mind, especially in its frequent failure to concentrate on the meaning of the words we recite at each Mass celebration. His honesty here is humbling and encouraging, making the reading of his book an especially rewarding experience. He acknowledges the challenge to faith the Creed represents while explaining its richness and clarifying as much as humanly possible the nature of the triune God that Christians are called upon to worship and obey. Many sections of the book also capture the marvelous phenomenon that was the vigorous growth of the Church so soon after the ignominious death on the cross of its Founder. This work is a treat for the restimulation of a Christian faith that might be languishing from years of neglect or thoughtless habit and routine. I highly recommend it.

Great resource that breaks down the Nicene Creed and gives an explanation of each component. If I remember correctly, Johnson is from the Catholic faith tradition, but he really does a great job leaving out sectarian bias. HE STICKS TO THE SCRIPTURES AND ITS THEOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE! I highly recommend it to anyone trying to gain more theological insight (with a bit of historical information) on the Nicene Creed. It is very accessible and not bogged down with a lot of "hard-to-understand" theological terminology.

Much of this book resounded with something that I've known and felt but could not put into words. As a result, I would now describe myself as a creedal or confessional Christian, but as the author points out; living out The Creed is the real challenge to those who recite it. The Nicene Creed's ability to put boundaries but not borders on our faith is one of its greatest strengths.

Timely explanation of Christianity's statement of faith in our post-modern and post-Christian timesFor someone who grew up in a neo-Protestant denomination, where the Nicene-Constantinople Creed (or any other) have never been mentioned (from the pulpit or during Sunday School), I found this read not only enlightening but also upbuilding for my faith. While I have to say there are a few statements that Luke Timothy Johnson makes without providing any evidence (and which I would like to challenge), this read is not a light read and neither a dry one. The first chapter briefly discusses the history of the early Christian creeds. The rest of the book is a treatise and explanation of every sentence, phrase, or words found in the Nicene-Constantinoplean creed. There are sub-chapters that are full of wisdom, and many of them are replete with Bible verses and quotations. While Dr. Johnson comes from a Roman-Catholic tradition, his writing is very Protestant and Orthodox friendly, and for that matter Heathen or non-believer friendly. This book is perfect for anyone who wants to learn what Christians believe now and what they have believed since the early Church times. Also, if you want to better understand the Creed which is recited every Sunday in church, this is an excellent read. The only companion in this subtopic (Christian Creeds) that I would recommend is "Credo: Historical and Theological Guide to Creeds and Confessions of Faith in the Christian Tradition" by Jaroslav Pelikan.

This is the book for those who want to learn more about the Nicene Creed. Luke Timothy Johnson explains the meaning and history behind the words many Christians recite each Sunday. I highly recommend this book for Christians who want a deeper understanding of what they believe and for non-Christians who would like to understand what Christians believe and why. It is wonderfully written and brings the Nicene Creed to life.

Regardless of your faith tradition, The Creed is a book worth exploring, studying, and discussing in your church. Agreement with Johnson's arguments and conclusions is not necessary -- it is the questions that Johnson raises that are important. Contemporary Christianity suffers a monumental credibility problem and identity crisis. Few Christians can clearly articulate what they believe, why it is important, and what ultimate meaning it has for their lives. Rigid fundamentalism to anything-goes liberalism paint a wide spectrum for confused seekers. Church-goers often simply go through the motions, mouthing professions of faith that have little or no meaning in their daily lives. Johnson calls all Christian believers to take seriously what we claim to believe, and he challenges us to act counter-culturally -- first and foremost by defining ourselves in relationship to community, rather than as individuals. This is a fine historical review as well as a clarion call to create a future grounded in a clear, compelling identity that says once and for all who we are, what we believe, and why we are here.

A wonderful standalone follow-up to the first book in the series, The True Queen retains all the vivid and inventive fantasy worldbuilding I loved about Sorcerer to the Crown, and adds even more delightful, profoundly interesting characters. Muna was an absolute delight to read about; Zen Cho has a remarkable talent for multifaceted, well-rounded characters with genuine human complexity. In addition, I loved getting glimpses of how my old favourites Zacharias and Prunella from the first book were doing, as well as more focus on Janda Baik and Mak Genggang in particular.I really enjoyed the plot as well; it twists and turns in ways that both give the satisfaction of correctly read foreshadowing and the pleasant wow of surprise.

I loved the first book and this one was not what I was expecting (bought it just off loving the first without reading the summary), but I loved where the story went. And all the central characters were fascinating.

I really wanted to like this book, but sadly it wasn't even very interesting. I rarely ask for a refund, but this book is way too expensive for such poor development, the story ideas are good, needs a good rewrite.

Loved this book. Jane Austen meets Harry Potter. It’s a separate story to the previous book but an excellent read.

This book is the perfect companion to SORCERER TO THE CROWN. I enjoyed every minute of it, as I expected to!

Do you want a delightful and charming Regency-era fantasy novel with a diverse cast and a f/f romance subplot? A story focused on sisterhood? Dragons with manners? Then you need to read The True Queen, a loose follow-up to Zen Cho’s previous novel, Socerer to the Crown!Muna and Sakti wake up on the beach of Janda Baik, knowing only their names and that they’re sisters. They quickly learn that they’ve been cursed by an unknown sorcerer — Muna’s lost her magic, and Sakti has started to fade away. Clues lead them to believe that the answers lie in England, so Muna and Sakti head to visit Sorceress Royal’s academy for female mages. But along the way, they run into trouble, and it’s now up to Muna to save her sister.Just like it’s predecessor, The True Queen is a gem of a novel, sparkling with humor and brimming with heart. Multiple sections made me laugh out loud, and I kept reading bits and pieces out to anyone around me. I’m so glad this book exists. If you haven’t read Socerer to the Crown, I think you could read The True Queen without it (although the first book is wonderful too). The protagonists of the first book only appear in supporting roles here, and the plot of The True Queen stands on its own.Of course, the events in The True Queen are influenced by what came before. As Muna’s staying at the school for female mages (and desperately pretending to have magic herself), you see the struggle of getting English society to adapt to magical women. One of the other major characters, Henrietta, is a teacher at the school and lying to her family about it, trying to avoid their disapproval.I guessed some of the book’s plot twists but it still had plenty of surprises in store for me. Besides, the pleasure was in the journey more than the destination. I love Cho’s writing and the world she presents, a Regency England infused with magic and where multiculturalism is actually recognized. And have I mentioned the dragons? I love dragons, and this book has QUEER DRAGONS. It doesn’t get any better than that. When I first read The True Queen, I immediately popped onto Twitter to scream about how I’d just read the sequel to Sorcerer to the Crown and how it was amazing and had queer Malaysian witches. This book made me so happy, and I’m glad it’s releasing soon so everyone else can read it too!I received an ARC in exchange for a free and honest review.

This entertaining fantasy tells the story of two sisters - Muna and Sakti - who washed up on the beach of Janda Baik without any memories of their past. They are taken in by Mak Genggang, primary witch of the island. Sakti becomes an apprentice magician while Muna, having no magic, finds work in the kitchen.Muna is determined to break the curse on her sister but Mak Genggang can't do it. She decides to send them to England and her friend the Sorceress Royal in hopes that she can break the curse. She sends them on a path through faerie to save them the year-long sea voyage. Only Muna and Sakti are separated and on Muna manages to arrive in England.Muna needs to hide her lack of magic and find a way to rescue her sister. But faerie is closed from England and the queen of the fae has declared war on England. It seems that a magical ornament has been stolen and she is convinced that the culprit is in England. As Muna learns more about the conflict and more about the past she doesn't remember, she makes friends with Henrietta Stapleton who is teaching at the academy for young women learning magic. Henny is a good friend of the Sorceress Royal. She is also hiding her magic from her family since it is not at all socially acceptable for a woman to use magic.Muna also gets involved with dragons in her quest to find her sister and finds herself on a rescue mission to save a mortal magician kept confined in the dragon lands until he can be gifted to the fairy queen as a snack and in reparation for the dragons having lost the queen's ornament. This was a fun story with entertaining worldbuilding and a nicely developed main character in Muna. Fans of fantasy will enjoy this story.

The Kindle version of this book lacks a table of contents. Had I know this ahead of time I never would have purchased it. I thought it would be great to have a copy of the code book on my tablet that comes to work with me everyday so that I could get the big paperback version out of my truck. Unfortunately since there is no table of contents, there is no easy way to look up the specific codes you are looking for. This makes the book useless for anything other than reading front to back which is not how it gets used most times. By the way the 2011 version does include a table of contents

This National Electrical Code (NEC) book was needed for both school and work. I have used it endlessly and it stays in great shape. I ordered the corresponding organization tabs and those were also very helpful! I believe it is a law that all electricians should keep a current code book on their vans. I keep it with me and use it frequently. They make a new one every 3 years so I will be ordering again soon! This will last you all 3 years because it is well made.It also works great with the corresponding color coded tabs. They will save you a lot of time and make it easier to find answers. The layout and the print is very easy to read and comprehend. It is easy to find your codes and solve a problem. I used this to take my two year electrician’s test and I passed with flying colors. The code book was necessary, but then combined with the color coded tabs, it made going through and finding the answers a breeze! I finished with time to spare. My co-workers have borrowed it as well and they really like how it’s laid out with the tabs. It just makes things much faster. If you get this book, definitely order the color tabs to go with, you won’t regret it. I don’t know what else to say, but for all you electricians, this is the code book you need to have for school and for work.

Get ready for some serious fireside cuddling with your electrician girlfriend or boyfriend and this book, and see where it takes you both!I recommend starting with Article 250, Grounding and Bonding, to discover and share your true feelings about electrical energy...safely.Passages like Article 250.28(D)(2) will put you both in the mood: "Where a service consists of more than a single enclosure as permitted in 230.71(A), the main bonding jumper for each enclosure shall be sized in accordance with 250.28(D)(1) based on the largest ungrounded service conductor serving that enclosure." Yeah, baby....And then when she reads the racy intro to Article 250.119 aloud to you, you'll know how the night is going to end up: "Unless required elsewhere in this Code, equipment grounding conductors shall be permitted to be bare, covered or insulated." Might as well get the wire strippers out right now....And, if your relationship doesn't quite work out, you'll know it when she rips out Article 376-Metal Wireways, highlights 376.58 and sticks it to your fridge: "376.58 Dead Ends. Dead ends of metal wireways shall be closed."Seriously though, if you are an electrician of any sort you have to buy this book when each new one comes out, you have no choice as the online versions are awful to use. The looseleaf format is GREAT as the pages lay flat open. The paper is very thin, otherwise it would be too heavy and bulky, so you might as well stock up on hole punch reinforcing stickers now, even though it's a 5-ring binder. And I highly recommend the aftermarket tabbed dividers to cut down on page flipping.

It came from China. Quite fast I may say. So that's why you get two stars.I'm an electrician. For yearssss. When this book came to me I opened it to put on my quick reference tabs. Wellll the pages appeared to be photocopied, and quite poorly too. And the pages themselves smelled pretty bad of poor quality ink. Some pages were actually dull and the ink may have not printed well enough. All my other code books were bought either from the manufacturer or a supply shop close by. I couldn't afford it this time around so I tried amazon. Never again. This book is fake.If you don't care about it being authentic, and can deal with the ink smell/poor paper/poor ink selection, than this book is for you.

I've never had a textbook just fall apart on me like this one did. I mean, the heavyest duty work it's done is sitting on a table, being flipped through in a normal, gentle manner. It's frustrating that you're required to know all of these codes (which makes sense, don't get me wrong), pay a premium to buy the book to learn them, but then the book they're in is printed and bound at the quality of a dollar store sketch pad. I wish I'd started studying earlier so I could've returned it in time. Just make sure you check out the binding glue when you receive it, just in case.

I saw (a picture of) a pond covered entirely with lotus leaves. If I had not read this book, I would have thought, "It's supposed to be beautiful but I just cannot like it." and immediately looked away searching for other beautiful images, having not known, no, better yet, not even had a slightest chance to hear the little voice in my MIND saying, "WHY do I not like it?"Does this book really give the answers to these kinds of questions? Yes, he gives his answers. And they are satisfying ones, too, so the huge title How the Mind Works. However, I believe that the answers to the seemingly unsolvable questions are not as important as the road toward the answers, strangely, on every step of which, not at the end of them, there lay the Meaning of Life (the final chapter of the book) for me. And that meaning is one good one to live by.

This is a book to read to gain insight about your mental processing and how others process their observations and the reactions that follow. Situation awareness is a skill that requires deliberate effort to develop and improve. Understanding our own mental process helps to improve self-discipline and to weed out our bad habits that are self-defeating and time wasting distraction traps we all encounter in our daily lives,

I was really surprised to see how controversial Steven Pinker is for some people. Apparently, there is a lot of anger by some scientists. I'm not sure why. I'm not a scientist, but, I read a lot of science. It may be that he has very strong opinions that he defends well on controversial subjects. Maybe it is professional jealousy. He is free in his criticism of scientists he feels let politics influence them and it might be that this upsets some people who like them. What you get here is a survey of the psychology of the mind, and it is a pyrotechnical feat. The range of subjects, quotations and examples is astonishing. Will you learn how the mind works? Not really, because no one knows yet. But, you will get many insights into it, you will get myths shattered, suspicions gratified and more explanations than you can probably absorb. At least, I can't absorb it all.It is not in my opinion as good a book as The Language Instinct, nor as good as The Blank Slate, which it resembles in some ways (I am reading them simultaneously, though I read TBS years ago for the first time, and you can't help but notice the cross-over). So, I considered giving it four stars. But, then I decided, it is such a powerful performance, and so well written, that it shouldn't get less than five stars just because he didn't surpass himself. I have another book of his on tap and I'm going to get right to it.I will offer this minor criticism. Have you ever sat through a fireworks display that just never ended? It might have benefitted from a little tighter editing, but it seems like he just doesn't want to leave anything out. If he knows it, he want us to know it too.

I had to read this book in college when studying Minds and Machines and fell in love with it. It's not an easy read, but worth every effort. Pinker explores a variety of different and difficult topics in a very elegant and entertaining, yet scientifically precise way.

Well-written for the layperson interested in such matters. Do not, however, imagine this is a science text written for peer-review. It isn't. Pinker inserts his own view throughout the book, often relying on his own experiences reading the science literature or his own conclusions drawn from years of experience in the field of cognitive science and linguistics.Fun and worth reading, particularly the sections on language.

Great book. Pinker does an excellent job of explaining how the mind has evolved of millennia to solve the problems that humans faced before civilization. I found the book to be very deep. It required me to read slowly to understand some of the passages. It was definitely worth the time though.

This is a very mind opening book, with a lot of heavy concept that took me a long time to read and understand.Steven Pinker is a genius and his argument about natural selection and how it shaped the very low levels of brain's neural network is on point. This book is very informative for the average science fan who wants to know more about the nature of intelligence and the substance in our brain that makes us conscious.I highly recommend this book.

Although some reviewers think that this book does not tell us how the mind works, it certainly does that. We can explore our brain/mind from the outside, from what we think and decide and do. All this begins in our brain/mind, so it explains what is going on there. Other books, for example from Edelman and Tononi explore the mind from within (A Universe Of Consciousness: How Matter Becomes Imagination). Both books are not for the faint of heart!
