This is THE one you must own if you are a "oldschool" NBA fan, a NY Knick fan or a fan of the greatest "proving ground" in basketball lore -the schoolyards and playgrounds of NYC !!.I owned the original printing as a kid in 1970 and it quickly became the "must have" for every Knick fan due to the amazing "blow'by'blow" description of the "Miracle on 33rd.St", The NBA Championship won by The 1969 NY Knicks . Quite possibly the greatest NBA team ever assembled.

I purchased this one for my son also. He is a retired athlete and just loves books about the history of sports in general and everything concerningsports. He says he learned alot about the development of basketball by reading this book. He gives it a "thumbs up" rating.

Pete Axthelm has a handle on what makes basketball a wonderful sport, and why many of us are in love with it. He doesn't seem to know exactly what he wants to do with this book. Is he reporting on inner-city basketball heroes? On their gravity-defying dunks, or their lightning-quick handles? Or is he reporting on 1970, the year the Knicks won the NBA Championship. The two stories don't intertwin seemlessly as he would have them, and you are left feeling like you haven't been fulfilled on either of the stories in this book. I gave this book 4 stars based more on his obvious joy in writting it (which makes it very fun to read) than his actual skill in writting it. I would have been much happier buying two books as long as this one, one on inner-city basketball in New York City, and one on the Knicks Championship of 1970.

love it. bought it after hearing it quoted in Rebound movie with Don Cheadle.

Well written and informative. Any Basketball fan with enjoy

Enjoyable reading for any real basketball fan

I bought this to read about theGoat, Earl Manigault. It didn't let me down. I saw the movie rebound and was eager to buy this.

It's a terrific book and I'm glad to have ordered it.

Review

"Crackles with intelligence and behavioral truth.... Akhtar is so eminently gifted in writing scenes that quake with powerful emotion.... The moments of strife, both religious and romantic, are frighteningly believable."―Charles McNulty, Los Angeles Times"At its fiercest...THE WHO AND THE WHAT bares some of the same teeth as [Akhtar's] riveting, 2013 Pulitzer-copping Disgraced.... Akhtar's who and what are potent."―Bob Verini, Variety"A thought-provoking work, one that smashes together references to Big Love and David Letterman with quotes from the Prophet Muhammad and academic arguments about gender politics.... Akhtar [is] one of theater's most vibrant, exciting young writers."―Mark Kennedy, Associated Press"Like Zarina's messy, impassioned book, THE WHO AND THE WHAT stirs the pot in unexpectedly dramatic ways."―Jason Clark, Entertainment Weekly"Matters of faith and family, gender and culture are stirred together into a fiery-flavored stew in THE WHO AND THE WHAT, the probing new play by Ayad Akhtar.... [that] explores intergenerational and interfaith conflicts with fluid eloquence and intelligence. Mr. Akhtar writes dialogue that, while often funny and always natural, crackles with ideas and continually reveals undercurrents of tension that ratchet up the emotional stakes."―Charles Isherwood, New York Times"Akhtar-winner of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in drama for Disgraced-has crafted a story that's dense with intertwined desires, frustrations, expectations and resentments.... A heady exploration of how one's hoped-for path in life can crash against the ramparts of family and society... [THE WHO AND THE WHAT] helps lift a veil on a spiritual tradition that's little-portrayed on American stages. The 'what' of this ambitious play could just about fill a book by itself; the 'who' at its heart is one lively, vibrant and questioning voice."―James Hebert, San Diego Union-Tribune"An interesting, sometimes riveting, take on patriarchy, loyalty and religious purity.... The dialogue is sharp and occasionally singeing."―Josh Baxt, CultureVulture"Funny and...moving."―Mike Fischer, Sunday Journal Sentinal"Gutsy and very admirable.... Ayad Akhtar is an American of Pakistani descent who burst onto the scene in 2012 with "Disgraced" (2013 Pulitzer Prize in Drama), "The Invisible Hand" (2nd play), and "American Dervish" (his first novel). He was born in NYC and raised in Wisconsin. In an interview that appears at the end of this book, he credits a high school English teacher with changing his life by getting him to think about the deepest questions of life.In his work, he continually addresses what it is like to be a Muslim in America. In "The Who and the What," (his third play), the story involves four characters - Zarina (32 - F) and Mahwish (25 - F), their father Afzal (60 - M), and Eli (30 - M). Mr. Akhtar took the introductory concept from Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" and applied to a Muslim American family in Atlanta in the present day (2014). Mahwish wants to get married to her long time boyfriend but can't until Zarina gets married. Zarina was in love with a white Christian but cut it off when her father told her to. She is grieving the relationship by holing up in the family home and cooking, cleaning and writing a book that she doesn't discuss. Afzal finds Eli as a potential mate for his daughter. Afzal is quite the character - he is warm and funny but also deeply conservative and patriarchal. The issues of filial obligation, generational conflict, the old world vs. the new, religious devotion, and love all play out over 10 scenes. "Disgraced" is a tragedy. This play exists in a different genre. As in his other work, Mr. Akhtar does not have any pointless words or frivolous scenes - everything utterance has a purpose. I saw this performed at the Huntington Theater in Boston in April of 2017 and then read it a two weeks later. It is quite clear that Mr. Akhtar is already a master playwright, and that he will likely win several more awards over the next few decades.

With this play, "The Who And The What," Pulitzer Prize winning author, Ayad Akhtar, continues to dig deeply into his own heritage as a Pakistani-American born into a Muslim family. As he has done with his play "Disgraced," and his novel, "American Dervish," he has created characters who wrestle with issues of identity. This grappling mirrors the wrestling that Mr. Akhtar himself has engaged in regarding complex questions of how to maintain his embrace of his cultural heritage while questioning many of the theological and social tenets of his family's Muslim faith. In this play, Zarina is writing a novel which examines the Prophet Mohamed's marriages, and the origin of women wearing the hijab - the veil. Her traditional father and sister are shocked by her lack of devotion to the accepted hagiographic image of the Prophet. There is plenty of conflict to be fleshed out as Zarina's questioning voice places a strain on her devotion to her faith and to her family.

This is a play, a stage drama, by the author of "Disgraced" which won a Pulitzer a few years back. This is as good. I have seen both plays, in Boston, and was spellbound. These are real people, living lives we can sympathize/empathize with. It is emotionally honest. Akhbar has an exquisite ear for dialogue.

Absolutely love Ayad Akhtar. Went to see Disgraced at the Lyceem theatre in NYC. Love American Dervish so I bought this one. A lot of great themes on females in Islam. Good read.

Bought it for a class on Muslim Lit, loved it.

Loved this! The story is great and the writing style is unique and fresh.

The Rational Optimist: How Prosperity Evolves, by Matt Ridley

From Publishers Weekly

Ideas have sex, in Ridley's schema; they follow a process of natural selection of their own, and as long as they continue to do so, there is reason to retire apocalyptic pessimism about the future of our species. Erstwhile zoologist, conservationist, and journalist, Ridley (The Red Queen) posits that as long as civilization engages in exchange and specialization, we will be able to reinvent ourselves and responsibly use earthly resources ad infinitum. Humanity's collective intelligence will save the day, just as it has over the centuries. Ridley puts current perceptions about violence, wealth, and the environment into historical perspective, reaching back thousands of years to advocate global free trade, smaller government, and the use of fossil fuels. He confidently takes on the experts, from modern sociologists who fret over the current level of violence in the world to environmentalists who disdain genetically modified crops. An ambitious and sunny paean to human ingenuity, this is an argument for why ambitious optimism is morally mandatory. (June) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

Science journalist Ridley believes there is a reason to be optimistic about the human race, and he defies the unprecedented economic pessimism he observes. His book is about the rapid and continuous change that human society experiences, unlike any other animal group. Ideas needed to meet and mate for culture to turn cumulative, and “there was a point in human pre-history when big-brained, cultural, learning people for the first time began to exchange things with each other and that once they started doing so, culture suddenly became cumulative, and the great headlong experiment of human economic ‘progress’ began.” Participants in the exchanges improved their lives by trading food and tools. Ridley believes it is probable that humanity will be better off in the next century than it is today, and so will the ecology of our planet. He dares the human race to embrace change, be rationally optimistic, and strive for an improved life for all people. --Mary Whaley

Matt Ridley has done it. He has written a book that takes a realist's approach at looking toward the future. His findings... it's a heck of a lot better than people are predicting. True Story. On a recent flight I had the misfortune of sitting next to a white knuckle anarchist. I decided that talking to him during the flight was probably the best way to keep me free from wearing vomit. The anarchist would make statements like, "anyone who can not feed their own subsitience deserves to die" and "The world is so over-populated that we need to blow up the big cities." Obviously, both of these statements are laughable (although scary that someone actually has that view point). What I found that by reciting passages from the "The Rational Optimist" I was able to offer very CONVINCING arguments against his viewpoints. The Rational Optimist shows us that Self-Sufficiency is a figment of our imagination. Who produces the steel for your shovel? Are you using a tractor... who made it? While engaging in these activities the proprietor would be able to grow their own food (Make steel or farm... you probably do one but not both). The key to our civilization (quite literally) is our ability to specialize in a task and trade those services for something that we are less efficient at doing.Anyhow - that is the premise for the first 250 pages of the "Rational Optimist." The remainder shows us why we have cause to be optimistic - here are a couple of examples- Food production - using fertilizers and pesticides we are able to greatly increase the productivity of land. This helps to both feed more people and to save land from deforestation. Organic food made sound enticing, but it will cause millions (if not billions) of people to die of starvation. It will also cause the need for additional farmland - MUCH more farmland. It will require more tractors which increases our need of fossil fuels. In short, organic foods have the markings of an environmental disaster.- Global warming - Higher CO2 levels means that plants grow faster. It also means longer growing season and the likelihood for more rain. This will allow us to save (more) forest land while feeding (more) people. What Matt Ridley has done is to show that through specialization and collaboration mankind has made several significant jumps in technology and economic growth. Why does economic growth matter? The more economic growth the less hungry people are... the less likely they to die from treatable diseases. Roughly 20 years ago the internet became the greatest tool for collaboration that the world has ever known.... If specialization and collaboration are the keys to economic growth and we now have this great tool.... Why shouldn't we be optimistic?Matt Ridley's writing can be a bit dry at times, but this is a very minor detriment. The true strength of the book his methodical approach in building a case that outlines (quite convincingly as my new anarchist friend can attest to) a scenario for a very rosy future.

The world is not getting closer to its end. On the contrary, it has been much improved in terms of social and cultural developments in addition to the conditions of human life in general since mankind started recording history of own. The fallacy of popular pessimistic views on the impending end of the world resulting from overpopulation, a lack of food, or any other apocalyptical reasons befitting a doomsday scenario, arises out of sheer ignorance of the nature of the human progress and/or of willful negligence of acknowledging it so as to populate epidemic scare across the globe for sensational attention and personal gains on the part of the popular authors of such doomsday scenarios. This book by Matt Ridley is indeed a fresh breath of air that gives people of the world a beacon of truth. Ridley asserts on the grounds of rational evidence and explanation that the progress of the human race within the historical times ranging from the ancient Greek/Roman times to the modern time has been made possible by collective human intelligence by which we exchange our ideas, skills, and knowledge in the form of specialized division of labor. This social collectivism, whether tacitly or unconsciously realized by doers, apperatins to synchronicity, a kind of inter-brain entrainment in which information based on experience is exchanged between individuals, which is also known as collective phenomenon. This collective intelligence is a vital essence of cultural evolution which results from selection by imitation of successful institutions and habits. It is this element of cumulative culture that makes us singularly different from beasts. Since this social trait is innately preprogrammed in mankind, there is no inevitable end to specialization of efforts and talents that keeps this collective phenomenon going. In fact, more jobs will be produced in more specialized areas contrary to brooding premonition that technology will push out manpower from work.In sum, Ridley aims to enlighten readers about the necessities of changes as part of cultural evolution for the betterment of mankind and the world itself. In the human history, no other time period has produced the better living conditions and cultural developments than those we have now due to a continued cumulative cultural evolution, which links to the evolution of the origins by natural selection. This book renders me a feeling that how wasteful it would be fretting about the uncertain and dark future that looks darker by popular theories of dysopic economic and social future. Just as Ridley will remain a steadfast rational optimist, I will continue to perform demands imposed upon daily tasks of life as a contribution to the orderliness and constancy of the world as m ancestors did because I know the world will not fall in calamity. as long as we as a collective body of the human race exist.

This is one of the top 2 books I've read about why humanity is at our current point, and what our future is likely to be. This is the perfect companion to Guns Germs and Steel by Diamond. Diamond's book lays out the geographical, weather and biological reasons why food and other resources were concentrated enough to build up population density, which led to acceleration of civilization. Ridley's book takes the next step: how did human behavior take advantage of those resources? Why did some countries accelerate more rapidly (e.g., England) while others stagnated in poverty (e.g., early China)? Ridley's answer is innovation and free trade. The most impressive parts of his book are (1) his clearly-stated thesis chapter-by-chapter; and (2) his meticulously-researched fact base to support his conclusions. These are important insights for political decisions, and I wish every voter would read this book.

A great work which though maybe seen as over optimistic in our current environment of deep pessimism. It did two things for me. One it showed that things have been even more dire in the past than now and that humankind always finds a way -- as long as exchange of things, services and ideas are allowed to continue. A great book worth its weight in gold.

Nine Parts of Desire: The Hidden World of Islamic Women

From Publishers Weekly

"Almighty God created sexual desires in ten parts; then he gave nine parts to women and one to men," explained Ali, founder of Islam's Shiite branch. In this powerful and enlightening report, Muslim women emerge from under their black chadors-often hiding jeans or high-fashion clothing-as a horrifyingly oppressed class slowly liberating themselves from the worst practices but still adhering to the basic values of Islam. Drawing on six years as the Wall Street Journal's Middle East reporter, Brooks presents stunning vignettes of women she has met-the American-born Queen Noor of Jordan, Hamas supporters in Gaza, Ayatollah Khomeini's daughter, Egyptian belly dancers, Saudi housewives, Iranian athletes, secretaries, divorcees, foreigners married to Muslim husbands, activists. Brooks carefully distinguishes mysogyny and oppressive cultural traditions from what she considers the true teachings of the Koran and the liberating philosophies of Muhammad. In some Muslim countries, external events and a small but burgeoning women's movement have somewhat liberalized the marital contract and opened up educational opportunities, some jobs and political offices to women, but genital mutilation continues, even for Muslim women in the U.S. Brooks hopes the U.S. will consider gender persecution a reason to offer asylum. From Booklist

During her six years covering the Middle East for the Wall Street Journal, Brooks sought to find out how Muslim women feel about their societies' attitudes toward women. What she discovered is sometimes astonishing, sometimes shocking, but always fascinating. Taking on the hijab (the Muslim woman's black veil) herself, Brooks talked with women throughout the Islamic world, reexamined the Koran, spent time with fundamentalist and feminist alike, and emerged with a deeper understanding of the religion as one that once empowered but now cripples women. She found, for instance, that Iran is one of the better Islamic countries for women, Saudi Arabia the worst; that the hijab can be strangely liberating; that enjoyment of their sexuality is an inherent right for Muslim women; and that to be a feminist under Islam calls for a daily form of courage almost incomprehensible to the Western mind. Brooks is a wonderful writer and thinker; the observations she makes and the conclusions she reaches open both our eyes and our minds to understanding Muslim women anew. Mary Ellen Sullivan

I am reading all of Geraldine Brooks' books. The first two were novels so it's hard to compare, except to say that her "story-telling" style is consistent and one never feels they are "reading history". I am learning a lot. That said...I am not finding it moving forward very quickly. I might attribute this to the fact that it is non-fiction, but having just read Just Mercy (also nonfiction) and flown through it, I would say that this book gets a tiny bit bogged down in delivering background info, but not enough to dissuade me from highly recommending it. When Ms. Brooks concentrates on individual stories it is very compelling. If you wonder about what motivates orthodox Islamic women to wear a burka, if you want to know what their home life is like, if you think of them as uneducated or unmodern, if you want to feel connected somehow....the information here will surprise you. You will likely, as I have, re-evaluate what you believed to be true.

Our women's book club had a very interesting discussion about this book, which taught us many new things about the Moslem world. I think we all came away with a better understanding of the lives of women and their families in the Near East. The only problem is that the book was written in the mid 1990's and so much has happened in the world since then that we all wished there was an updated version!

Years before Pulitzer Prize-winning author Geraldine Brooks penned her incredible novels, she lived and worked for six years in the Middle East as a journalist for The Wall Street Journal—quite a feat for a woman in an Islamic society that devalued everyone female and cleverly attempted to thwart her attempts to do her job. This nonfiction book is an absolutely fascinating account of the utter subjugation of women's lives in the late 20th century in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Lebanon, Iran and Iraq during a time of extreme Islamic fundamentalism. The true stories she tells that are populated with real-life characters are perceptive, infuriating, astonishing, heartbreaking and quite often tragic. The title, once you understand its source, says everything: "Almighty God created sexual desire in ten parts; then he gave nine parts to women and one to men." The man who said this was Ali ibn Abu Taleb, the husband of the prophet Muhammad's beloved and much-revered daughter, Fatima. He was also the founder of the Shiite sect of Islam.Translation: Women have so much sexual desire they must be veiled and secluded in their homes in order for men to be able to control themselves. They may not be on the streets or in stores unaccompanied by a man, they may only work in certain professions and no matter what, they may not touch any man to whom they are not married or related. No man, other than their husband or family, may ever see her hair. Punishment for any violations is rapid and severe.Through the very personal stories of individual women, this exceptional book explains so much about the Middle East, including its history, religion and politics, that it offers Westerners a whole new level of understanding and appreciation of Islamic culture. Even though this book was published in 1994—and so by definition is a bit dated—this is still essential reading for women worldwide, as well as for anyone—male or female—who wants to better understand those who are often considered our enemies.

This book was published over 10 years ago so I assume that it is a bit outdated. I am afraid that the conditions for Islamic women have mostly gotten worse than described. I am also going to assume the ratings for this book varied widely. Some were probably so vile that they had to be blocked and other ratings may have been overly idealistic and condemning of the religion vs. traditions of the Islamic countries, some of which are still very much backwards (to those of us in the west).I found the book packed with vital, interesting, balanced information regarding religious practices in various Islamic countries. The author manages to cover the differences of attitudes and the attempts to make progress. She does a good job of explaining why some women, in the spirit of religious fever and anti-Western sentiment chose to start wearing a veil and even covering themselves from head to foot. It is hard for us in the west to accept this. There is an good understandable discussion of the Koran and it is interpreted to require more seclusion and abuse that the prophet Mohammed required. Though I must state, the book is written by a woman who converted to Judaism. I assume that makes her statements unacceptable to many people who might read this. This is a scholarly book with readable history of the Islamic countries and the various rulers of those countries. It also gave a good political analysis of how Western actions have helped increase fundamental fever rather than stop it (our misguided attempts have backfired). I also back came a conclusion that I had before I read the book. The only way Islamic women are going to gain some freedom from abuse is for them to find ways to lead their own people. Islamic men need to help and slowly they might make strides. I also had to resist injecting my own values into the reading of this - it was next to impossible but I did try.The book does a fairly good job of describing the main branches of Islamic traditions and why they came about. I knew that there were two but did not know about the many sub branches and related traditions. Finally there is a wonderful section about women athletics and the competition of Islamic women from Russian dominated countries (fairly liberal) to those from traditionally conservative Islamic areas (little training available.)I have a few minor negative comments. 1) the dictionary of terms is not go far enough. For instance there is a reference to a woman who is a Druse but nowhere was there an explanation of what a Druse is. 2) I would have liked a better understand what the term jihad really means to Islam. Many people believe all Muslims want to kill us. I think this is hardly true. But I would have like a deeper discussion of that point and similar attitudes to the west.3) I would have liked to see a timeline on the progress of Islam and the major conflicts with Christianity as well as persecution from Judaism and other religions.
