There are several great gardening books out there (Armitage, DiSabato-Aust) but this is the book I have been waiting for. I have wanted a garden book covering plants (perennials, annuals, trees, shrubs) that I can actually find in a local nursery as well as likely have success in growing in my hardiness zone. Lyon covers 12 states and 3 Canadian provinces broken down into 5 Midwest regions that provide the reader with maximum chances of finding the right plant for "my" site. Lyon's illustrations of over 200 plants are marvelous. His writing style is conversational, witty -- I felt like he was sitting beside me discussing plants, soil, diseases, etc. His advice is based on his personal gardening experiences as well as being the director of several major Midwest public gardens. He is candid about the pros and cons of his selections but leaves the reader with good cultivar choices should you want to try, for example, a Bearded Iris - a plant I have come to dislike in my garden and Lyon's narrative hits the problems on the head. I wish I could have had his critical perspective over the years - would have saved me time, money, and frustrations over my poor decisions as well as often reinforcing the good choices I have made. Lyon wants his reader to have successful and enjoyable garden experiences. I look forward to trying out my newly found Midwest garden knowledge.

Arrived today. We found the landscape design we need for our front yard. Could not be happier witht he content, price and vendor!

Ed writes as well as he speaks. That's saying a lot. The book addresses all kinds of questions and answers things I didn't know to ask. I have bought several now, for me and as gifts.

Extremely helpful book. We are converting a large patch of grass lawn back into prairie. This book gave us good ideas for drought-resistant, perennials.

I got this for a dear step daughter who is an avid and very successful gardener. It looks to be a good and complete reference book.

Great info

I like the book, but wish their would have been more details included in the plant section.

A great and useful book. I was a little surprised at some omissions in plant lists but still loved the book.

Ron Rolheiser, OMI —theologian, teacher, columnist, award-winning author "An important book that will healthily shake up both Pro-Life and Pro-Choice readers by showing that, not only are we closer to each other than we thought, but there is a way, together, to walk out of the present political, social, religious, and legal stalemate within which we find ourselves."Sidney Callahan —Hastings Center Distinguished Scholar "This accessible work may well transform the American abortion debate. Camosy gives full weight to both pro-choice feminist concerns and pro-life feminism."Rev. Wm. Michael Mulvey, STL, DD —Bishop of Corpus Christi "Courageously pointing the way toward a renewed respect and love for all human life, Camosy's proposal promises to foster greater unity and communion on a large scale."William Saletan —National Correspondent at Slate.com "Many of us who support the right to abortion have challenged pro-lifers to put their money where their mouth is—on equal pay, pregnancy discrimination, parental leave, health care, and child care. Camosy here does all that and more."Library Journal "Readers interested in bioethics and public policy will find this a valuable source of information and arguments on abortion."The Gospel Coalition "Wrestles not only with the morality of abortion but also with the social structures that make abortion so common."The Living Church "A remarkable study. It is illuminating, fascinating, well written, and well argued."

I read this book to discuss with a friend, against a deadline, and the first 30 pages went slowly. The topic is so discouraging and the prospect of learning anything seemed so low. At that point, I figured out how many pages per day I would have to read to be finished by the time I met my friend, and put the book down. But when I picked it up again and got to the sections on the moral status of the fetus and the options for public policy, I found the author’s points compelling and his statistics and case studies fascinating. I don’t agree with all of his conclusions, but I feel I could comfortably discuss them with people who had very different options from mine and still find common ground.I do wish the author had given more space to psychological problems that can not only prevent women from consenting to sex but also delay recognition of pregnancy and even make a pregnancy dangerous for a woman and any children she already has – I think he dismisses psychological issues too easily. His constant disparagement of corporations is also a little too easy – most women find more support for a pregnancy in the policies of American corporations than in the policies of the American government. In fact, the importance of subsidized universal day care could have been mentioned more prominently, more often, and in more detail.Nevertheless, this is a valuable book and makes for absorbing reading. It is important for the author’s painstaking research, excellent presentation, and open approach to the problem in a way that encourages further thought and further discussion.

Beyond the Abortion Wars: A Way Forward for a New Generation by Charles C. Camosy attempts to break down the divisive all or nothing form of public and political debate on abortion, address the nuances and come to a compromise position suitable for the vast majority. This commendable goal is not achieved in this ambitious book, though I don't believe it was for lack of honest effort. While Camosy tries to avoid the hardline dichotomies that rule abortion debates (liberal/conservative, secular/religious, etc) he never fully leaves behind the secular vs religious type of argument. Additionally, the part of the compromise that might be considered as the right/Republican compromise calls for the types of assistance and security that should be in place regardless of any position on abortion. In exchange, the pro-choice side is supposed to pretty much capitulate on abortion. While he proposes legislation that would indeed help women and children (which shouldn't be tied to abortion but done simply because it is the right thing to do) he does not believe that re-criminalization of abortion would negatively impact women. Historically, abortions will take place whether they are legal or not. Those with money will find a save avenue while those desperate will go back to, both figuratively and literally, the coat hanger. In other words, many of the women who get an abortion, particularly those who are financially unable or are afraid to let their fellow churchgoers know, risk serious injury and death. That would seem to me to be a negative impact.I do believe that Camosy sincerely tried to argue both sides but his background and own strong background makes it difficult to fully argue the points of most pro-choice advocates. Not to mention that the law is not religious but is secular. If I believe based on science that life does not begin at conception and I also know the Bible does not dispute this, then my belief system does not stand in the way of an abortion because it is not, by any rational standard, murder or "taking an innocent life" as many like to claim. Since medical science agrees, then the law (again, this is not religious law that governs the land but civil/secular law) should allow abortions. Those whose belief systems are less rational and don't take into account medical science are free to not get an abortion even if a result of rape or accidental or unable to support a child. While I obviously do not agree with the "compromise" put forth nor do I believe the information presented was entirely accurate and most certainly poorly expressed on the side of pro-choice, I still think this book should be read by most people regardless of where they stand. This is an attempt to do more than repeat slogans from either end of the debate spectrum and acknowledges that many positions are not as strongly grounded as many believe. As an early attempt to get beyond demonizing those on the other side (no matter which side) it is a good start. I believe it falls short but it opens the dialogue.Reviewed from a copy made available by the publisher via NetGalley.

Groundbreaking. Camosy may perhaps be the first to address the abortion debate head on, including multiple agendas that fuel the divide. He writes with insight and clarity, and draws from multiple perspectives while citing statistics. He does not write for the convinced/opinionated reader, nor does he write with religious fervor beyond logic. I feel hopeful for those who read this book. I've been in search for moderation within the abortion debate, and this may be it.

Professor Camosy's excellent analysis of the abortion wars is based on years of conversations with students from all sides of the political debate which explains why his book has great value in proposing a practical legislative solution to the abortion impasse.

Really great analysis of the current abortion rights issue. Very thoughtful and well written.

On time; as described; satisfied!

This book is not for the feint of heart who wish to read "doctrine" about this issue, whatever "side" one espouses. If you pick up this book be prepared for thought! Dr. Camosy presents his arguments in a very readable manner but this is not light reading. His position is based on carefully reasoned arguments that have roots in solid philosophy and theology. The goal is to find common ground on which to address the issues. You may ultimately disagree with Dr. Camosy's conclusions but in doing so you will be called upon to reason and form a position based on solid arguments and not slogans and emotional appeals. This work is a courageous foray into a morass of emotional issues based on tenuous reasoning with the goal of providing an orderly platform on which to come together for deep thought and discussion. If you wish to collect "ammunition" for your political agenda look elsewhere. If you want clarity that will allow firm foundations for a rational and moral position on this issue read on!

I loved these stories so much, that I wanted to name my only daughter, "Ayla", after the central character. However my husband was not a fan, so we compromised on Maya. This is one of my all time favorite book series, and I am a prolific reader so that is saying something! I was an anthropology major in college, and I find the way that she wove human discoveries, inventions, and herbal medicine - into the story of complex hierarchy and cultural relationships present in societies (small and larger groups of people) fascinating. This book takes you on hunting trips and the experience of learning new languages, falling in love and having your heart broken. Having a child, losing a child. Learn about the good in people and the bad. It teaches about respecting women and how different societies have different expectations on that front. Wonderful wonderful books <3

I know I'm decades behind in picking up this title, but I'm so glad that I did. In the first of Jean Auel's "Earth's Children" series, we get a first-person perspective into what it would be like to live as a Neanderthal person more than 25,000 years ago, and I was fascinated at every turn. Auel has created such a believable and historically viable story, that the reader can't help but fall into the lives of these people, who call themselves the Clan of the Cave Bear. What I think I loved most about this story was the gender dynamics of the Clan. We get a glimpse into a society radically different from those of modern times and yet one that can also be strikingly familiar at times. In the Clan, women are second-class citizens: they are submissive to the men, they depend on the men for leadership and guidance, and they are happy with their roles in life. In part, this dynamic is driven by the developmental limitations of the Neanderthal people -- individuals are incapable of free thought and everything they "know" how to do is genetically pre-programmed into their brains. Men are genetically the hunters and leaders with their stronger bodies and dominant minds. Women are genetically the gatherers, caregivers and mothers. These societal roles are immutable, with change being beyond the capacity of their brains to even comprehend. The starkness of this dynamic is very well illustrated when Ayla, a Cro-Magnon girl, comes to live with the Clan. Because her brain is wired differently from that of the Neanderthals who rescue and take her in, she constantly finds herself at odds with the Clan's way of life. She questions. She challenges. She desires independence. She struggles with the gender restrictions that the Clan has placed on her to the point of causing her great hardship in the early years of her life. This hardship, and Ayla's perseverance through it, is also one of the spectacular aspects of this book. Ayla loses her birth parents at a very young age to a natural disaster. She is alone in an unfriendly wilderness as a toddler -- without shelter from the elements or wild animals, without food, without guidance or care. When she is discovered by the Clan, she must learn a new language and fit into a mold in the Clan's society for which she is not physically or mentally suited. She is constantly seen as ugly for her physical features that are unlike those of the Clan and she is constantly being chided for her boldness and independent way of thinking, despite her desperate attempts to fit in.SPOILER ALERT!!!Ayla's story, much like the future of the Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons, is not one with a happy ending. In spite of all of her struggle and hardship, she finds herself alone again at the end of the book, hardened and wizened, having lost her adoptive parents to death and having lost her son as well as the camaraderie of a people and culture due to her inability to completely submit to the Clan's way of life. This book was such a fascinating and heart-wrenching experience for me; I am anxious to continue reading the series and hope to see Ayla rise above her hardship and thrive.

.....Jean Auel has created an entire world in which our cousins, The Neanderthals, have once again come alive. Their ancient world is primitive and wild, yet this vigorous breed of human survived and thrived for millennia in one of the harshest climates possible. Ms. Auel has written a fascinating story replete with interesting characters and sub-plots and filled with incredibly complex herb lore, survival techniques and the explanations of the intricacies of making clothes, tools and implements during the stone age. Her descriptions of long-extinct animals and plants will keep you turning the pages and marveling at the ingenuity of a species that lack our imaginations. She has definitely done her homework. I have seen reviews complaining about the pages "wasted" on these details, but I found them fascinating. This is the first book in a 6 book series that tells the story of Ayla, a 5 year old orphan of OUR species, who is found by the traveling Neanderthal clan. She tries desperately to live within with the customs this ancient race and it is her story of trials, troubles, tenacity and triumph that makes this series unforgettable. It is necessary to read the books in order to understand the story and I'm sure that from the first, you will be as riveted as I was.I read The Clan of the Cave Bear because it had received incredible reviews, yet it had been banned from so many schools. I decided I just had to discover the reason for this paradox and I did. There are graphic depictions of sexual activity and gory descriptions of hunting. I would not recommend this books for anyone under 14 years old.The only (minor) complaint I have is that the Kindle version does not label the map to let you know that the story is taking place approximately 35,000-25,000 years ago. It does show the area where it takes place, the change in coastlines during the ice age and the routes taken by the clan as they traveled to the Clan gathering, the mammoth hunt, etc.

There are books which mark an entire era in your life, and this one (as well as the subsequent series) have definitely marked mine. As a parent and teacher, this is the kind of a book I would love young people to read, not only to fall in love with fantastic characters and historical fiction, but also to learn to imagine and visualize, in quite a life-like way, what it meant to live in a place and time with no electricity, no technology, no politics. Life stripped down to survival, emotions, learning and communication. Reading it, I went through a range of emotions from compassion, fear, awe, empathy, sadness, fury, frustration, admiration. It wasn't a question of when I would finish it. The only thing that mattered was how fast I could read the second part, what would happen and how they would grow. An epic adventure and lesson on the power of spirit and mind!
