I greatly respect and admire Dr. Hyman and the work he is doing to prevent and reverse diabesity. He is a public health hero, in my opinion. But this cookbook has far too many exotic, expensive, and flat-out bizarre ingredients. There are 175 recipes here created by a celebrity chef and I eagerly pored over every one. At the end, I would make less than 10% of them - not nearly enough for this cookbook to earn a place in my kitchen. I didn't expect to love every recipe - no cookbook can do that - but I certainly expected to be inspired to try more than a mere 10%. Here are some recipe titles:- Baked Marinated Tempeh with Shiitake-Turnip-Chard Hash- Kimchi and Sweet Potato Fish Cakes with Cabbage-Apple Slaw- Slow-Cooked Duck Legs with Spiced Cherry Sauce and White Bean PureeI could go on and on. I LOVE trying new recipes and I LOVE experimenting with new flavors. But most of these recipes are downright unappetizing. There are only 32 color photographs for 175 recipes - not nearly enough to whet my interest. And talk about time consuming! Far too many of these recipes take far too long to prepare - there are some (other than smoothies or quick breakfasts) that you can get on the table in 30 minutes or so, but far too few; between the prep time and the cooking time, you're looking at way more than 30 minutes, and some, such as the bone broths (which form the basis of other recipes) take 15 to 27 HOURS. For some recipes, you're expected to make your own nut milk (you'll have to purchase a nut-milk bag). So this book is deeply disappointing. Is our health worth the time and cost? Of course, but that's not the issue here - I can (and do) make far faster meals with organic, local produce, organic poultry, and grass-fed/finished beef in a fraction of the time; I already routinely use ghee, almond butter, coconut aminos, and unsalted grass-fed butter. So if you're looking to expand your repertoire, as I was, this didn't do it for me. And if you're new to this way of cooking, it will be overwhelming. Dried kelp? Kelp noodles? Kelp powder? Teff flour? Reishi mushroom capsules? Nori? Spirulina? Bee pollen? Just some of the many ingredients you'll have to either purchase online or at Whole Foods or a health food store. I heartily applaud Dr. Hyman's effort here, so A for effort, but C- for execution.

Good diet. I am slowly adjusting my diet to the suggestions in the book. I increased fat, decreased carbs and eliminated white sugar and fruit juices. which helped me to lose 15lbs. in 30 days. My mind is clearer, I have a little more energy and my emotions are more on the positive side. Pretty good for a 69yr. old man with PTSD and severe health issues for the last six years.

My husband and I are just beginning to follow Dr. Hyman' dietary program. As a person with both genetically high cholesterol and familial heart problems, I so far have found this a better way of eating than any other heart diet.

This is one the best cookbooks I own. It's versatile and well-organized. For most recipes, if you don't have the unusual ingredients, you can skip them or use a substitute. It'd be even better if Hyman suggested what you could replace hard to find ingredients with (for example, I haven't had time to make the extra trip to the health foods store for spirulina or mirin). However, the recipes need work. The Meatloaf with Italian Seasoning recipe took over twice as long as stated to reach temp - an hour instead of 15-20 minutes. I doubled the Smoky Ketchup, yet it took three times as long to cook (and never did reach a ketchup-y consistency). The Cherry-Hemp Smoothie was too thin and watery. On the other hand, the Ginger-Tamari Baked Tofu was delicious (I used low-sodium soy sauce and skipped the mirin). I've made a few things that were hard to screw up, but I'm a little nervous about making the sweet potato bread after the other issues.

I liked the first book. But the cookbook recipes have many ingredients I did not care for. I live in a small town I do not believe I could find many of them . Did not find many I would even try.

The recipes that I have tried were good. But he uses ingredients that are not available in our small town grocery stores.

This guy has opened my eyes on food and how the body utilizes fat and carbs. Easy to read, informative, and an invaluable adjunct to a new way of eating! It's working for me!

Well written easy to read book. I was skeptical when I heard Dr. Marc on public tv, but I researched the science and it's no kidding. Results were measurable in a very short time. Highly recommended.

Larry Kramer is a man with strong emotions, and he has a special talent for translating those emotions to the written word so that they may be translated back to the spoken word by others in the form of a drama without any loss of that emotional urgency. I had the opportunity to see the original production of a stellar example of Kramer's dramatic skills, The Normal Heart, at New York's Public Theater in 1985 with Brad Davis as its star, the original Ned Weeks. It was a shattering evening, and the play struck me with the force of a hurricane.Reading the play for the first time over 30 years later, I'm still powerfully impacted by the forcefulness of Kramer's words. Although the play is set in the early days of the AIDS epidemic, when the number of the dead was still only in the thousands, it does not seem dated in the least. The Royal National Theatre of Great Britain has included the play in its list of the 100 greatest plays of the twentieth century, and the honor is well deserved. Kramer's play speaks to universal values and passions which can withstand the passage of time. Undoubtedly students will be studying this text and actors will be performing this play for many years to come. The Destiny of Me, a companion play to The Normal Heart also featuring Ned Weeks as the protagonist, is a memory play and is not quite the primal scream of the earlier drama. It is set a number of years after The Normal Heart when Ned Weeks has become ill, but, occasionally confusingly, it also is set in Weeks' youth. Despite the muted emotional tones (as contrasted with The Normal Heart), the play still packs quite the powerful punch, a punch sufficiently strong that the play was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in drama the year it was first produced.Because of the ebb and flow in time setting from Weeks' childhood to his present, this play probably works much better when seen in performance than when read as a text. The Destiny of Me requires a reader with a skilled imagination to play out the drama in his or her head in order for it to be fully appreciated. Merely reading and absorbing the words will not do this drama justice. Nevertheless, the effort should be made because this drama, too, is one that is likely to withstand the passage of time. It is a play very much of its time at the same time it is a play that, like its predecessor, takes up universal values and passions. These are the elements of great drama; these are the elements of the two plays by Larry Kramer in this timeless volume.

The rating and description are mainly for the first of these two plays, "The Normal Heart," which is Kramer's angry and heart-wrenching account of the social response to AIDS in the early years of its appearance in New York. A long-time admirer of Randy Shilts' book "And the band played on" I found this to be a condensed, angrier, and more impassioned companion piece; in fact I'm assigning it as the first of three pieces on AIDS in a course I've developed on disease narratives. Kramer's play is the artist/playwright/care-giver/activist's perspective; Shilts (excerpts only) will be the journalistic viewpoint and Abraham Verghese's "My own country" rounds it out with a doctor's account."The Destiny of Me," while doubtless brilliant and troubling in it's own way, did not quite do it for me maybe because it was a much more personal story that I couldn't relate to. I still think it's worth a read.. but am glad that I'd decided on the former for the course. My other choice would have been "Angels in America" by Tony Kushner but ultimately I went with Kramer's play not because as it's closer to the events as they happened. What's really shocking in an eye-opening way reading this play several decades since it was written is the fact that the word AIDS does not even make an appearance once! And yet it's obvious what's being talked about. Anybody interested in human behavior, in sickness & how to cope with the fears that come with uncertainty or in this case, sheer ignorance, should read this and be outraged.

The play is amazingly affecting and reading it without any preconceptions it brought me to gulping tears.Set in the early '80s and bringing to life the beginning of Aids epidemic. It was groundbreaking theater that predated playwright Tony Kushner's Angels in Ameria. The heartbreak, fear different factions of the Gay/Lesbian/Transgender/and Straight communities are explored through the relationship of an activist and NY times writer in a relationship. This play is in production as a movie with Ryan Murphy (Glee, Nip/Tuck, New Normal) as director, playwright Tony Kushner writing the screenplay and Mark Ruffulo (the Avengers)/Matt Bomer (White Collar) playing the couple. Should be a great movie.

I have never read a Larry Kramer play nor have I been introduce to much literature about the AIDS epidemic, but these plays deliver a touching narration on not only historical context but the emotional impact on the characters of this play. The Normal Heart deserves its critical acclamation and our attention as artist and as a fellow citizens of the world. It is not afraid to bring out the dark details of this time and stamp a message that should be heralded in today's time. The Destiny of Me, in my opinion is just as strong of a play, but focuses more on the deliverance of the main characters ego and the stacks of being a human being in this time period. I strongly recommend this play not only as a thespian, but to anyone wanting to understand the AIDS epidemic on a deeper level. I will definitely be reading more literature by Mr. Kramer.

Review

Catholic Register "The author's prose is clean and often elegant. . . The Fear of Beggars should be on the bookshelves of teachers, academics, religious and lay, and all those involved in Christian social justice."Christian Century "Johnson writes beautifully and blends assertion with critique with disarming equanimity."Choice "Immediately arresting because it takes on the issue of begging in the context of a broader Christian ethic. . . Her study makes a useful contribution to the relation between Christian ethics and economic/political theory."Christine D. Pohl — author of Making Room "One does not necessarily expect a book on begging and reimagining property relations to sing with theological and historical insight, but Kelly Johnson's book does just that. Her account is fascinating and beautifully written. She assembles a remarkable group of conversation partners and, with them, raises provocative theological and economic questions and shows how much they matter."Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove — coauthor of Inhabiting the Church "Thank God, Kelly Johnson is bold enough to look our fear of beggars in the face. Love drives out fear, and indeed this book is filled with love for St. Francis, Peter Maurin, and the gifts their lives offer us if only we will let go of our purse strings to receive them. Here is a wealth of wisdom gleaned from Lady Poverty, Source of all our riches."Ched Myers — Bartimaeus Cooperative Ministries "An elegant treatise. Johnson's approach defies disciplinary apartheid, weaving a rich tapestry of theological and ethical reflection on faith and economics. Her historical exegesis of churchly stewardship discourse alone is worth the freight. And her commendation of Francis's economic unilateral disarmament' is welcome wisdom in our increasingly hard-hearted 'agonistic marketplace.'"

Kelly Johnson has written a very clear, passionate and eye opening book. Her blistering chapter on the use/ history of 'stewardship' took my breath away. Can not recommend highly enough.

This is a great book, but be forewarned that its intended audience includes the academy. Much of this book delves into pertinent elements of church history, the development of capitalism in the west, and even some economic theory. If you are able to handle a dose of these other disciplines, you should enjoy the book; if you cannot, then this book may not be for you. The last chapter is definitely the best in the book, but the preceding chapters are relevant and necessary to fully appreciate the final chapter. The author claims at the beginning that she does not seek to answer all the questions raised by begging. However, this book will challenge you -- if you're a Christian -- to ponder how God is calling you to live a faithful life that is entirely reliant upon him.

This book is a challenging read, but good academic research.Gave me some new insights on voluntary begging and stewardship.

I know of very few books that attempt to frame not only the charitable obligation of the Christian to the beggar, but the very status of all Christians as beggars before God. Johnson performs an excellent service to both the church and the academy by taking seriously Jesus' approach (especially in light of the prophets) to the poor, beggars, and to money in general. She argues that begging itself has a long sacramental history within Christianity that also provides the non-beggar the opportunity to participate in God's forthcoming heavenly banquet. By refusing to be fearful of beggars, our eyes are opened to the kind of kingdom Jesus inaugurated. This book will challenge most, if not all, of "Christian" America's presumptions about money and those who are completely without it. It is a must-read.

Review

"Released this month by Little, Brown and Company, Repertoire is a collection of the author's own tried-and-true recipes, and they offer convincing evidence that a simplified approach doesn't mean uninspired cooking...The best of these recipes all have some smart twist like that--so obviously rewarding, you wonder why you haven't been singing the song that way all along." -Luke Tsai, San Francisco Magazine"San Francisco Chronicle food columnist Battilana delivers 75 classic recipes in this valuable cookbook, arguing that home cooks don't need a collection of hundreds of recipes to be well-rounded, but a "set of durable, flexible recipes that... form the backbone" of their cooking. --Publisher's Weekly"Repertoire is a magical book of insanely delicious keeper recipes you can trust with your life. Guard it like it's made of gold." --Samin Nosrat, New York Times bestselling author of Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat"My collection of go-to recipes has grown by a dozen, thanks to Repertoire. Offered up with warmth, confidence, and the gentle authority of a lifelong cook, this book will earn a permanent home on your kitchen counter. From (deceptively doable!) Twice-Baked Magic Souffles to Vietnamese caramel-lacquered Candy Pork(!!) and a straight-up green salad that makes me want to go absolutely nuts with the exclamation points, Battilana is the home cook we all want to be, the kind who makes everyday magic." -- Molly Wizenberg, New York Times bestselling author of A Homemade Life and Delancey"What every home cook needs in their box of tricks." --Yotam Ottolenghi, New York Times bestselling author of Jerusalem"Jessica Battilana inspires you to cook beyond her recipes, giving you the confidence to build your own repertoire." --Vivian Howard, New York Times bestselling author of Deep Run Roots"A modern-day Joy of Cooking. Every kitchen should have one on the shelf." --Amanda Freitag, author of The Chef Next Door"Ingredient-based cooking, tinged with global flavors yet not fussy, is my favorite type of cooking." --David Lebovitz, author of L'Appart and My Paris Kitchen

I've been cooking for a long time. And I have a little bit of a thing for cookbooks; mostly because they offer inspiration, or a set of ways of thinking about my kitchen that I haven't thought of before. Having seen Battilana's recipes in the San Francisco Chronicle, I was interested in what a book of her thinking would look like. It has been less than a week with this book and I already know that her recipes are a life that I would love to be able to live. She takes foods and flavors that I love and makes them simple enough to think about cooking for my family. Not as a project, but as a weeknight. Not as something special, but as a means with which to gather around the table with the people I most want to share that table with. There are some things in the book that I'll likely never cook--or it might just be that I don't kids big enough for them matter yet (hot dog fried rice, for instance), but reading through this book, and beginning with some of the recipes is a hint about what's to come for my family. And it's delicious. So much appreciation to any author who can share that point of view and make it simple to follow. Buy the book, cook the recipes, feed your family and build your repertoire. Each and every element of that process is infinitely worth it.

It isn’t often that I want to cook absolutely everything in a cookbook, but Repertoire is inspiring me to do just that. Beautiful, tasty, and approachable recipes are delivered with clarity, humor and wit in this excellent book. I’ve made the truck stop baked beans and maple-blueberry cornmeal cake already. Delicious. Looking forward to the fried salt and pepper shrimp, gribiche with asparagus, and cherry hand pies.

I bought this book not knowing a lot about it, but I liked the idea of having a repertoire of go-to recipes. I really love this book. All the recipes I've tried have been great. The carrots with burrata are the best. Every recipe is something I want to make and I think Jessica did a great job with this book. I am an avid cookbook collector (over 1200 books) and I really recommend this book.

Please buy this book. It is full of very cookable recipes that feature global flavors and techniques we all can master on weeknights and beyond.I also appreciate the very sincere tone of this book- I do believe these are the recipes the author cooks by heart for her family. It FEELS like someone's repertoire when you read it. I loved the little anecdotes at the beginning of each recipe where Jessica explains why the recipe is important to her and which part of her life it came from. The best part is that I now have lots of new food ideas and I literally can't wait to share what is in this book with my friends and family.Jessica, if you are reading this I want you to know that I have food grade lye in my Amazon shopping cart for the pretzels!

Love this cookbook. As soon as it arrived we made a weekly meal plan based on the recipes and went shopping. So far all 3 recipes we’ve made have come out perfectly and the entire family loved them. Honey Harissa Chicken was just the right balance of spicy and sweet. Eggplant Parm was wonderful (I normally hate eggplant) and so straightforward that my vegetarian daughter who never cooks pulled it off perfectly with just a little parental supervision. And Maine Truck Stop Baked Beans are literally the best baked beans I’ve ever had. Looking forward to many more meals from this book!

This is my new go-to cookbook! I love to cook, but as a new mom, time has become so much more precious than it was in my younger foodie days. This is a book that I can turn to on a frantic weeknight when I get home at 5pm and have 30 minutes to make something that will still satisfy my desire to use real ingredients and create something that is healthy and delicious. When I have more time and want to get fancy, there are recipes for that too. I'm pretty sure I will end up trying everything in this book!

I met Jessica at Yosemite Chefs Dinner in January of this year. She was dynamic, funny and smart. When I found out she was releasing a cookbook, I ordered it the day we left. I loved her take on food. The book has not disappointed me. Her recipes are simple but riff on classic and traditional food. I received it Friday and have already made the salsa verde with grilled flank steak. It was perfect. I can't wait to make most of the recipes in her book. The Greenest Salad looks fabulous as does her take on Eggplant Parmigiana.

It’s not often you find a cookbook that both inspires you to be a better cook and also makes you feel good about the cook you already are. The recipes in Repertoire feel comfortable and familiar but exciting and like something you DEFINITELY want to make and eat as soon as possible. It’s also incredibly family friendly, which as a mother and a cookbook nerd, I appreciate. I’m adding this to the rotation of two or three books I love to give as an engagement/wedding gift and a housewarming gift. Can’t recommend it enough!
