Profoundly moving, expertly crafted tale… a singular masterpiece, exceptionally well-served by Kay's atmospheric and ominous illustrations… tackles the toughest of subjects by refusing to flinch, meeting the ugly truth about life head-on with compassion, bravery, and insight.—Publishers Weekly (starred review)There’s no denying it: this is one profoundly sad story. But it’s also wise, darkly funny and brave, told in spare sentences, punctuated with fantastic images and stirring silences. Past his sorrow, fright and rage, Conor ultimately lands in a place — an imperfect one, of course — where healing can begin. A MONSTER CALLS is a gift from a generous storyteller and a potent piece of art.—The New York TimesA nuanced tale that draws on elements of classic horror stories to delve into the terrifying terrain of loss. . . . Ness brilliantly captures Conor’s horrifying emotional ride as his mother’s inevitable death approaches. In an ideal pairing of text and illustration, the novel is liberally laced with Kay’s evocatively textured pen-and-ink artwork, which surrounds the text, softly caressing it in quiet moments and in others rushing toward the viewer with a nightmarish intensity.A poignant tribute to the life and talent of Siobhan Dowd and an astonishing exploration of fear.—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)A brilliantly executed, powerful tale.—School Library Journal (starred review)Ness twists out a resolution that is revelatory in its obviousness, beautiful in its execution, and fearless in its honesty. Kays artwork keeps the pace, gnawing at the edges of the pages with thundercloud shadows and keeping the monster just barely, terribly seeable.—Booklist (starred review)A masterpiece about life and loss that will stay with the reader long after the final page is turned.—Library Media Connection (starred review)The heavily textured monochromatic illustrations are silent screams, rendering Conor's inner chaos palpable with dense shading and jagged edges symbolizing the wildness within while shifting perspectives alternately create intimacy and distance, like the push and pull he feels as he tries to stay engaged in an impossibly painful situation… Emotionally wrenching, this draws truth across pain in a way that is accessible to middle-school readers.—Bulletin of the Center for Children's BooksHeart-wrenching and thought-provoking.—The Horn BookPatrick Ness is an insanely beautiful writer.—TIME MagazineThe power of this beautiful and achingly sad story for readers over the age of 12 derives not only from Mr. Ness's capacity to write heart-stopping prose but also from Jim Kay's stunning black-ink illustrations. I have been reading aloud to my twins every night, and I thought this might be a book they would enjoy, because of the illustrations. I ended up finishing it with them within 24 hours. You know how you come across a book, and after reading it, you feel like EVERYONE needs to read it as well? That is how I felt with this book. As a mother, this book ripped my heart to shreds, and put me in an emotional state as I was reading it to my sons. But it was worth every tear I shed. Guys, if you haven't read this book, Do it! The story, the writing, the illustrations, this book was pure perfection and a total 5 out of 5 stars for me.If you have read this, what were your thoughts?

Majority of the previous reviewer's are correct. A Monster Calls: Inspired by an idea from Siobhan Dowd, is a book everyone in your family can benefit from. The story revolves around Conor and he is in the mist of battling strange nightmares, bullies at school, and a close family member heart breaking disease. Conor ends up learning life lessons from an unlikely entity and uncover feelings within himself he never knew exist. The imagery in the novel is amazing. A reader can feel, imagine, and visualize some of the key moments Conor experience (the bullying, anger at his grandmother). The novel is perfect for a child/teenager who is going through personal issues whether it is dealing with death, acceptance, or carrying around unnecessary guilt. In addition, a movie is available to rent on Amazon.com. However, I highly recommend you read the novel first before the movie (it will help you to understand significant moments). Overall, a moving novel that depicts real life events, relationships, and feelings. I appreciate you for taking time out to read my review. I hope it is informative.

Beautifully written and hauntingly illustrated, Ness’ novel tells the story of Conor, a young boy who suffers from a recurring nightmare about his mother, who is ill with cancer. Practically friendless—save for a girl named Lily, whom Conor seems to shun—and bullied in school, Conor copes with his loneliness and fear by calling on a monster who appears to him in the form of a yew tree. The monster—whose real purpose grows apparent as the novel progresses—tells Conor three stories in preparation for hearing Conor tells his own story.A narrative about the truth and knowledge contained within stories and their inherent ability to empower us, Ness’ novel tackles the experience of youthful trauma with sensitivity, poignancy, and grace. It’s the first of his novels that I’ve read, but it certainly will not be the last.

Never have I read such a poignant and accessible book on accepting monsters invading our lives. This book is a mere 205 pages, easily readable in a day due to the layout, but has stuck with me continuously over the past two years.Conor is a young boy filled with fear because of his mothers illness, and harbors the bravery of a thousand men. As we all do at every point in our life, he needs guidance, given to him in the form of the monster- a yew tree. He is as old as the land, and has many stories to tell- four of which he tells Conor.Patrick Ness has done an excellent job capturing and humanizing the reality none of us want or know how to face, and forces us to confront the same fears Conor is experiencing. There were many moments where my face was soaked in tears. Death and the way we experience it, our truth, is a topic Ness gracefully introduces and allows us to feel the pain along with his main character. Conor is more human and more real than any other character I have encountered. The illustrations by Jim Kay are beautifully done, creating a slightly uncomfortable but very enthralling atmosphere between the pages. When someone asks for a young-adult recommendation, I immediately suggest A Monster Calls, with the warning that there will be emotions not usually confronted by young adults. Be prepared for difficult, but important, discussions with your students, friends, or children .

With beautiful illustrations by Jim Kay, Patrick Ness tells an intensely emotional story about a child and a monster. This book had a massive impact on me. It was an easy read - from this perspective, it's probably very accessible from middle school on up. But the subject matter is intense. My eyes weren't dry as I finished it. It's very well-done.Conor's mother is dying of cancer. All this while, a monster, in the form of the yew tree in his backyard is visiting him at night. It's a fascinating story.I picked up this book with my other October reads, and with a name of A Monster Calls, I assumed it was about monsters. But it's so much more. It's about stories, about love, about loss. About dealing with the hard things in life.I recommend it, even thought it twisted my guts inside out upon reading it. It's extremely emotional. I won't say anything else, to not spoil it from anyone, but it's a worthy read.

My wife cried throughout most of the second half of the novel and loved the writing. I, too, was impressed with the writing, and the story kept me engaged, although I thought a couple of the lessons from the monster were created to give a shock or twist ending just for the sake of it. There were definitely some holes in logic for me, but I still enjoyed the ride. And the artwork was stunning. It's also a quick read, maybe a couple hours. And there is a great lesson about having to face your fears and another concerning how actions are more important than thoughts. Finally, it proves that one can write a compelling work without having to resort to sex, cuss words, unnecessary violence, and inappropriate scenes.

Bought for use as a reference -- one must assume that it is not possible to completely understand the meaning of these writings unless you are fluent in Arabic and have years of exposure to the social structures involved. So it is necessary to accept the authenticity of the translator's English.

This bilingual edition of the Qur'an is just what I was hoping it would be,well-translated and a ready reference when needed in my work on comparative religions and sacred texts..

The translation is quite accurate and easy to read- not the usual old English style of translation that gets confusing and makes you feel lost. It doesn't have many footnotes, so if you are looking for a more detailed translation that gives a background to why the verses were revealed, then this isn't the translation for you.

Good Buy! True to description... Fast Shipping... 2 Thumbs up! A Lil worn but bought used copy!

Excellent very informative

very pleased

its a good translation just wish it had some commentary and Tafsir.

One of my greatest passions is comparative religion. I've been looking for a translation of the Quran for a long time. The only version I ever owned was a 1956 paperback version: "The Meaning of the Glorious Koran," by Marmaduke Pickthall. I skipped around in it but could never quite get ingrossed in it. One day I was at a bookstore and found this translation and interpretation by Majid Fkahry. It was so clear and easy to read that I bought it immediately. It's a large book in actual size, but it averages only about 250 words per page. And the Quran is a very short book. So don't be misled by the number of pages. It's a fairly quick read. The reason there are so few words on such large pages is because each page is split down the middle, with English text on one side and the original Arabic on the other. I'll probably never have any use for the Arabic text, but the format feels very open because there's such a small portion of English text on each page. In other words, because the text isn't very dense, reading it doesn't seem to be a chore.Fakhry includes a brief and very helpful four page introduction before the text. And throughout the book he includes footnotes to help Westerners understand context they might not otherwise grasp. But the footnotes are mercifully brief and aid rather than interrupt the flow of reading. Clarity and ease of reading are the two best words to describe it. Why did I decide to read the Quran in the first place? Simple. Often the problems caused by religious followers comes from *interpretations* of scripture rather than the scripture itself. I just thought it was high time for me to look at the Quran with my own eyes and not rely on someone else's interpretation of it.Of course, translations of dead languages become interpretations whether they intend to or not. And the author of this version doesn't deny that it's an interpretation. The author also enlisted the aid of translator Mahmud Zayid. Between them they attempted to correct errors of the earlier and more well-known versions, including Pickthall's version. They also consulted the most authoritative commentaries and they tried their best to render the words into clear and readable English. I think they succeeded on that front. It's probably not possible to render a perfect translation of the Quran. Ancient Arabic is a highly idiosyncratic language. Not even modern day Arabs speak the Arabic of Muhammad's day. Some scholars of Islam think that some of the meanings of the Quran have been distorted because of this. They could be right. But this version is pretty much the mainstream interpretation. In other words, even the various disagreeing sects of Islam would probably mostly agree on this interpretation, because despite their deep divisions there are many things they agree on.The first Surah (chapter) is relatively short: only 65 words long. In the second Surah I found words that are eerily similar to words Jesus spoke----a message that some Muslims fail to heed, just as some Christians fail to heed Jesus' similar message. From Surah 2:"There are some who say 'We believe in Allah and the Last Day;' but they are not real believers. They seek to deceive Allah and the believers, but they deceive none others but themselves, though they are not aware of that . . . A painful punishment awaits them because of their lying. And when they are told 'Do not sow mischief in the land' they say: 'We are only doing good.' It is they who make mischief, but they are unaware of that."The words go on to say that such people are "fools" and "devils" and describes them as "intransigent." Intransigence is defined by Merriam-Webster as "characterized by refusal to compromise or abandon an extreme position or attitude." Terrorists seem not to have read that Surah. Notice the similarity of that Surah with Jesus' words:"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that last day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!' (Matthew 7:20-23)Jesus also said: "By their fruit ye shall know them." (Matthew 7:16)The similarity between both messages is striking. What's more striking is that the message is delivered so early in the Quran: on the first page, in fact. Both messages say that there are people who consider themselves to be devout and doing God's work but who are deceiving themselves and committing evils instead.I may never completely settle the issue in my own mind of the exact nature of Muhammad as a religious figure. But there is undeniable wisdom within the pages of the Quran. Only a fool could miss it. It seems primarily a message of peace, mercy, compassion, and understanding. There are other parts that don't give me as much comfort, though, because they could be construed as justifying various social codes that I consider too extreme. But there are other passages that moderate those kinds of phrases by supplying a more compassionate perspective. For example, Westerners are familiar with the fact that criminals are punished harshly in Islamic cultures. But in the Quran is says that criminals who show honest remorse should be shown mercy. It's also important to remember that the Quran was written within a cultural context. And the pre-Islamic social rules of Arabs tended to be even more harsh than the post-Islamic social rules of Arabs. So it seems more likely that Muhammad was trying to moderate extreme cultural norms rather than exacerbate or justify them.My uneducated guess, though, is that the Quran may have been altered or misinterpreted somewhere along the line, changing it into something it was never intended to be. Of course, Islamic scholars deny this. And even if if there was some conspiracy to alter the words of the Quran, it would have had to have been very close to the time of Muhammad's death, because there's not much historical evidence of it, if any. But meaning and interpretation could have been altered either intentionally or unintentionally.Ultimately I see no resemblance between the author of these scriptures and modern day terrorists. If they truly believe in God's Day of Judgement, then a close reading of the Quran should fill them with fear and dread because of their actions, not great expectations. That's my opinion.Considering the impact that Islamists have had on Western society in the 20th and 21st centuries, I think Westerners owe it to themselves to read the Quran and learn some the history of Muhammad and Islam. The good parts were very good and have been glossed over. The Quran is relatively short----not nearly the length of even the New Testament. And this translation and interpretation makes it an easy read.

Written during the First World War, March 1915, this report on alleged atrocities by Austro-Hungarian armed forces is a pro-Serbian propaganda pamphlet. The author, R.A. Reiss, lacks verifiable proofs but in the introduction signs himself as "obedient servant" to the Prime Minister of Serbia. He mentions documents that the Serbian authorities made available to him but offers no corroboration from the other side. Thus the conditions for an objective and believable appraisal of atrocities are not presented. With these shortcomings the book does not contribute to a better understanding the war in Serbia.

Well documented book that relies on official historical documents. Gives excellent view on the world order in and during WWI.

Warning: not an easy read. A very accurate description of war crimes commited by the Austro-Hungarian army again Serbian civilians and army alike, including the use of prohibited expanding bullets Dr RA Reiss, was on hand to record Austro-Hungarian war crimes in Serbia. According to Reiss imperial soldiers stated in 1915 that they received official orders to massacre Serb civilians and that "everything was permissible". Soldiers invaded villages and rounded up unarmed men, women and children. They were either shot dead, bayoneted to death or hanged… Women were sent up to the front lines and mass-raped. The inhabitants of whole villages were taken as hostages and humiliated and tortured This was all well documented at the time by the western press after and caused mass outrage.Serbia's losses in the Great War were greater, proportionately, than any other nation: 62.5 per cent of Serbian males aged between 15 and 55 died between 1914 and 1918. Research by Russian demographer Boris Urlanis suggests 728,000 Serbian wartime deaths, of which just 278,000 were military.

Very well written, worth a read.

Whether you live in a big city or in a more rural setting, trees are all around you. They may be in city parks, school playgrounds, government buildings or urban green-belts. In some locations, away from the cities, trees make up dense forest that can stretch for hundreds of miles, line natural waterways or lakes, stand as lone sentinels in rocky and eroded landscapes. If your like me, you appreciate trees but have only the most basic ability to tell them apart. Sure, most of us know the difference between a pine tree and, say, an oak tree. But usually that's as far as it goes. In Seeing Trees author Nancy Ross Hugo addresses that issue with an in depth look at the biology and anatomy of trees, all kinds of trees. Drawing parallels with bird watching, Hugo shows us how get started in a "tree watching" hobby. Like all complex life forms trees are made up of multiple body parts. Leaves, branches and trunk-bark are the first things we notice. But those are just the surface parts, what we need is a closer look. To that end, Hugo gives the reader a guided tour of tree anatomy. The book opens with a section on "tree viewing": when and where to look, getting a good field guide and techniques to use for the best results. Up next a closer look at various tree parts like; leaves, flowers, fruit and bark. Flower and leaf buds are studied as are twigs, seeds and pollen. The last section puts the spotlight on 9 of our native North American trees and 1 exotic. Get to know: Black Walnut, Red Maple, White Oak and American Beech among others. Two tree species deserve extra attention, the Ginkgo and the Osage Orange. The Ginkgo is an exotic species that was introduced to North America from China some 200 years ago and has established itself in any well watered, drained environment.Considered by many to be a "living fossil", the Ginkgo has been around for over 250 million years but today is represented by only one species living in China. The Osage Orange is another ancient species, this one native to North America. It's over sized fruit required over sized herbivores to spread its seeds. Ice Age mega fauna like Mammoths, Mastodons, Ground Sloth and Camels may have feasted on its juicy, bitter, fruit. Hugo's writing is conversational, like setting down with a friendly Botanist over afternoon tea. Anyone interested in nature writing in general or trees in particular should find Seeing Trees to be an enjoyable read. Hugo's approach is, for the most part, non-technical but some of the descriptive parts can be a little daunting. Yet, even when she's getting technical the text is easy to follow and I came away with a better understanding of trees and a real desire to try "tree watching" as a recreational hobby. Now, if I can just find a good field guide and a group of interested nature lovers, who knows where this will lead me. Along with Hugo's interesting text are Robert Liewellyn's beautiful photo's that decorate the narrative with many incredible images, ranging from full trees to micro's of buds, flower and other tree parts. The use of the white background is effective on some shots but on others it was distracting and even a little annoying ( ie: pale yellow-green or white flowers against a white background is not the best way to highlight your subject. In some frames a dark or black, or even a natural background, would have been preferable). That being said, this is still a wonderful nature book and one that I will be referring back to, now and then. I had no technical or formatting problems with this Kindle edition.LastRanger

I am an artist and was looking for close up photography of ginkgo leaves, wanting to draw them realistically.Well, I got accurate ginkgo leaves and more. The photography is just delightful, incredible closeups of a variety of common trees. The beauty of leaves, seeds, bark, etc is artistically inspiring on many levels, across many disciplines. And I thought that i was not interested in info about the trees but the text is informative, presented so even i could understand it, and chatty enough not to bore. I am reading through all of it surprisingly. Well worth the money, this book. Oh, my complaint is that there are not enough trees represented- I want MORE! Great job, Nancy R. Hugo ! Thank you!

I loved this book! Not only did I learn a lot about the nuances of trees, but I loved the writing. Nancy Hugo's love for trees was woven throughout her prose and her own spirit seemed embedded in her words. She is someone I would like to know. At any rate, even though the trees chosen were from the east and I live in the Pacific Northwest, I could apply the knowledge and am now so much more attuned to the trees here. I also have a transplanted Magnolia that for some reason thrives among conifers and Hugo's chapter on this beloved tree was very enlightening.

this wise, beautiful book presents, in intimate photos and insightful prose, ten species of trees native to Virginia and neighboring states: American beech, American sycamore, black walnut, Eastern red cedar, gingko, red maple, Southern magnolia, tulip poplar, white oak, white pine. the author and photographer invite us to see, as we have never seen in such detail before, these trees as they reach downward upward inward outward over time -- days, seasons, years....do not mistake this for a coffee-table book; this is a wise wonder.

This is an absolutely fabulous book. It is too much like a school text book for me, but she does make it interesting. I thought that I knew a lot about trees, but I found my knowledge lacking. If you have an interest in trees, then you should get this book.

This is a beautiful, heart opening book. I treasured reading it. I actually limited myself to one chapter a night to extend my reading experience over a longer time. I've never done that before. The photographs are gorgeous, and Nancy Hugo's love-filled descriptions about the extraordinary qualities of trees are powerfully engaging. I originally purchased this book off a store end cap as a gift for my mother. The day I started reading it, I treasured it so much, I bought another copy for my mother. I wasn't willing to give my book away.

Simply stated, this book is fantastic. I love trees, can identify most, cultivate many, paint and draw them, collect their berries and nuts... but this book showed me so much that I was missing. I was reading the book in the hammock under the maples and only put it down to go over to inspect the 'bud scars' and 'bundle scar' patterns on my black walnut. As a nature lover I thought I 'was' seeing the trees, but this book has opened my eyes to so much more. Peaceful and wonderful.

Amazing book with fabulous photos and thoughtful text, accessible to the layman. This book will make you or your child want to get outside, observe, and marvel at the beauty of Nature. The glory of the little things we so easily miss is clearly displayed in the fantastic close-up photos.

Thank you, Ryan. I will apologize in advance as I'm sure my words will fall far short of my intentions to communicate how your book affected me personally. Thank you for making the decision to serve and for the service you provided not just to our country, but to the people of Iraq you helped while there. More than that, thank you for sharing your story. More often than not, those returning from war, as you pointed out yourself, are reluctant to share their experiences. From someone who never enlisted, it is easier to say you appreciate a soldier's sacrifice when you have no real concept of what was involved other than a vague notion of his/her temporary residence in an alien environment and the perceived anxieties of being there and missing one's family and friends. Was it dangerous? Well, it is war. That lack of specificity does little or nothing to paint a picture or transfer feelings to someone who wasn't there. I am certain that your stories brought me just a short distance towards truly understanding what you and other members of the armed forces have gone through, but it is farther than any newscast or anyone else has ever taken me. I truly (if not fully) appreciate your decision to help bring others on that journey, to help them share both your sacrifice and your newfound camaraderie. The decision to open up your soul in this way was, in some ways, as equally brave as going off to serve. Also, thank you for the laughs. The way you wove humor through a story about life, death, fear, and more... well, again, my words fail me, so I'll just say it again: Thank you!

Thank you Ryan for taking me with you on each page. I felt as though I was right there. My grandfather was an MP for General Patton and would never talk about anything. Your words helped me understand him better and to ensure I don't ever forget to thank you and everyone else in the military for the freedom that I often take for granted. Thank you Ryan.

"Ghosts of War" tells the story of a typical U.S. Army reservist deployed to the Middle East. While the story lacks boom-boom excitement, this is due to the fact that the story is an autobiographical account of his experiences "over there." Not everyone in Iraq or Afghanistan gets shot or injured. Nonetheless, all are deeply affected by the experience, and it shows in the book, which is worth the read. Anyone interested in another account of a G.I.'s experiences can read "War Year" by Joe Haldeman - a semi-autobiographical account of his year in Vietnam - which is perhaps the best "true" account of war I've ever read. I even teach "War Year" in my English classes (we also use "Ghosts of War").

I bought this book to learn why a 19 year old would join the Military right out of high school. I was not disappointed, very informative and I feel very honestly written. I feel that our government did not do justice to the individuals who chose to join the Military service at the time. I want to thank all our service men and women for the sacrifices they made and are making to defend our country. Thank-you Ryan for writing this book,I totally enjoyed it.

Surprisingly readable. What started as the kind of book that I wrongly though would be a tale of little value, written by a talented enlisted man, turned out to be quite enjoyable. Perhaps is his style of writing, the way he describes his surroundings, thoughts, emotions, etc., but it does pack power and is well worth the price of the book. 4 Stars.

If you are considering joining the service, this is a great book to read. It offers a window into what to expect in both basic training and in war. Also, this story links the training to the actual "boots on the ground" experience of being at war - these insights will make basic training a little more palatable.

Good Book, my grandson leaves for Ft. Benning, GA Monday.Gave me an idea what basic training would be like for him.

This book is very insightful. It carries you into a solders mind and what more there is to war besides what is seen on tv. What they are truly fighting for and what it's like after they come home

If you are looking for a lot of actual practical applications of AI/Ml to marketing and innovation...look elsewhere.I was really excited about reading this book but ended up quite disappointed. I’m not sure what the audience for this book is and what they really wanted the reader to take away. The first half of the book basically describes what AI/ML entails while the second half of the book goes into applications. In this part there is a lot of content that is simply not that relevant (e.g. using 3 pages to describe different general pricing models), can be done perfectly fine through very simple conventional methods (e.g. the example on how to inform a special value section in a store) and then there are applications that simply put are very wishful thinking with the current state of database ability to build accurate models on that. The book succeeds in providing an interesting vision of the role AI/ML can play in the future. If you’re trying to understand current best practices it’s simply not there, which is what I’d hoped for given the authors.

This book is a must-read for anyone whose professional industry could be disrupted by AI. It explains complex concepts with easy to understand examples and demonstrates the value AI can bring to a number of industries with real word case studies. Having just finished this, I can already think of 8-10 things I can do in my job to better harness our organization’s capabilities.

The authors have deep technical understandings of ML and AI and have direct knowledge of what they speak, which was really helpful and I appreciated. The first half of the book is pretty technical, but the second half is filled with helpful anecdotes and real-life applications. This is a must-read for anyone even remotely interested or impacted by ML and AI.

Revived book with cover torn.

This is a must read for anyone in marketing, product development or on the agency side and very accurately pinpoints the forces reshaping the industry today. While there is a bit of detail in between, especially on statistical methods - the authors really tie it together in a relevant, 'so-what' set of implications in the final chapters. AI has been around for some time, and love the analogy to how stock trading programs haven't replaced hedge fund investors, rather enabled them to run their operations more efficiently & maximize output. As AI is here to stay, the book teaches us some basics to embrace, co-exist with it - and demystify some of the misconceptions that "it's a crystal ball swimming in blue liquid taking over the world". Have already recommended this to my team.

A good read if you are in Marketing or planning to go into Marketing. Especially liked:* Chapter 14 - The Future of Ai - enabled Marketing, and Planning for it.Also valued the history on Ai, Machine Learning and Deep Learning.

I know AI is changing my business, this book was recommended to me and it did not disappoint. Very useful background and anecdotes.

The book describes AI from a unique perspective. It's really worth reading. Highly recommend.

Amazon.com Review

Frankly, this literary critic didn't expect Mick Foley's memoir of his life as Mankind (and his other wrestling personas, Cactus Jack and Dude Love) to hit No. 1 on Amazon.com's hardcover nonfiction bestseller list in its first literary bout. The cover is cluttered and confusing, and do we really need 500-plus pages of Foley's boasts? Yes. Foley gives his all for his calling, and he burns to tell his adventures. Take the famous tale of how he lost most of his ear (the bloody result is depicted in the 16-page color-photo section). It was in his 1994 bouts with Vader (Leon White): after getting a broken nose, a dislocated jaw, and 21 stitches in the first match, Foley did his "hangman" routine, wherein he catches his neck between the second and third ropes and spins them into a twist. "The end result is the illusion of a man being hanged by his neck while his body kicks and writhes in an attempt to get out... the man actually is hanging by his neck and the body really does kick and writhe in an attempt to get out." Unfortunately, in the prior match, Too Cold Scorpio had had the officials tighten the ropes, so Foley tore off his ear to avoid death by strangulation, like "a fox that chews off its paw to escape a trap." Foley also wrestles on 10,000-thumbtack mats with barbwire ropes and C-4 explosives, and earns the ultimate compliment: "The fans really like the way you bleed." Many fans also like the way his gory story reads. --Tim Appelo

This book gets a great deal of credit as being the book that began the cottage industry of wrestling biographies. And Mick Foley is a talented writer with a lot of personality in his writing, and he has a fascinating story to tell. The main problem with this book is that it’s published by WWE, so you never feel you’re getting the full story, but rather the WWE-sanitized version of the truth. The first 200 or so pages, dealing with Mick’s early years breaking into the business, are easily the best part of the book. The middle of the book, dealing with his years in WCW, are also interesting, but clearly written with bias. This was written in 1999 when WCW was still a competitor to WWE, and Foley takes every chance to trash the competition. He gives Vince McMahon a pass for ignoring him all those years, instead focusing his anger on JJ Dillon, who was with WWE in the early 90s but by 1997 had moved on to WCW.The last part of the book dealing with his 1996-99 WWE career is little more than a synopsis of his appearances on Raw and WWE ppv’s. Very little insight or backstage tales from this period. Mick writes of Vince McMahon as a genius and benevolent father figure. This was a great book in its time, but it hasn’t aged well when compared to all the other wrestler biographies not published by WWE, this one falls a bit short.

Mick Foley was better known as Mankind and Cactus Jack, the "hardcore legend" as he calls himself tongue-in-cheek.Have A Nice Day, or as he preferred, Blood and Sweatsocks, was a bestseller in '99 in the middle of the attitude era.Foley was not a typical pro wrestler, if there is such a thing. Most were either muscular, or agile high-flyers, or giantsuper heavyweights. Foley wasn't the strongest or the most skilled technically, but he was among the toughest, andwas able to take punishment, "bumps" or dangerous falls like few others. Many pro wrestlers are bright-Kevin "Diesel"Nash comes to mind, but Foley surprised the world with his literary ability. He not only wrote the book himself, hewrote over 700 pages by hand in a series of notebooks over the course of a couple of months. He was specifically hoping to reach non-fans baffled by this industry, which was popular especially in the '80s and '90s.Apparently he did, but it's amazing for fans of the '80s and '90s, for whom all the old names come back. They beginwith Abdullah the Butcher, who in every way seems like ancient history from another era, as well as Terry Funk,Foley's great mentor in the hardcore ways. There is a brief section on childhood and youth, but fairly early on he gets to the business. Other than discussionsof his wife Colette and children, most of the book focuses there, while his sequels go on to other topics. He spentyears in World Championship Wrestling (WCW, the South) and had tension with Ric Flair despite his unmatchedability. As a booker, Flair was responsible for promoting wrestlers and the storylines. There were legendary battleswith Vader, as well as Sting, Ron Simmons, and Steve Austin was also in WCW before going to WWF/E. Then therewas Extreme Championship Wrestling (Philadelphia) with Paul Heyman the promoter. Terry Funk was there, alongwith Sabu, Shane Douglas, Tommy Dreamer, Raven and many others. Also there were bloody battles in Japan. In the 2000s, he later went to TNA.But eventually Foley became known for his work in the WWF/E with promoter Vince McMahon. There's not muchon Hogan, other than a reference to his repeating the word "brother" in promos or interviews. But the 90s hadBret and Owen Hart, Shawn Michaels, Undertaker, Stone Cold Steve Austin, the Rock and Triple H. Austin wasinsanely popular in the mid to late 90s, and Foley is candid about his envy several times. There are also jokesand insults about Al Snow, a performer of some ability who never made it quite as big, but was good attrading roasts. The 80s and 90s developed into the "attitude" era of wrestling. Like that product, this book is at least PG 13 orTV 14. One of the controversies was when wrestling returned from TV 14 to PG. Foley was part of this era butself-critical of it, thinking of its effects on his family with the portrayal of sex and violence. But it was an excitingera. The highlight of the book is my senior year of high school. The most controversial matches in history wereBret vs. Shawn in 11/97, and Mankind vs. Undertaker in 6/98, the weekend that I graduated.

When I was in engineering school in Asia, that summer, I had to travel back and forth is the most rickety bus.One day on the way to school I found this guy reselling books on the street. None of what he sold were of any interest to me as I passed by but on something strange caught my eye, under an adult novel was a book with a picture of Mick Foley...This was the book. The was selling it for a few rupees....5 rupees to be precise. He had no idea what he was selling!I bought it and it was my companion on those bus rides for the next few weeks. So many good anecdotes....you will cry and laugh as you read through. What makes Mick such a great author is that his writing style makes it seem like he is your best buddy. It feels like he is talking to you directly. like each page is meant for you to find and read.I have read several other autobiographical books before and since, none of them come close.Give it a read to see how the business worksGive it a read to see how Wrestling used to be, how folks paid their dues. How these scary mean have a side that show they care for each other as professionals, they care for the spectacle of wrestlingAlso his love for Christmas and Disney...AdorableLong story short, on moving here I had to get a copy of my own and I did.I recommend you read this book and maybe pick a few others he wrote

Amazon.com Review

It is known that when the great Catholic writer G.K. Chesterton began his book on Saint Thomas Aquinas (who is, quite possibly, the most influential of all Christian theologians), "his research for the project consisted of a very casual perusal of a few books on his subject." To say that Chesterton was no authority is an understatement. To say further that he has written a masterpiece of elucidation may also be an understatement. Etienne Gilson, the chief scholar of Aquinas in the 20th century, said flatly "I consider it as being without possible comparison the best book ever written on St. Thomas. Nothing short of genius can account for such an achievement.... Chesterton was one of the deepest thinkers who ever existed; he was deep because he was right; and he could not help being right; but he could not either help being modest and charitable, so he left it to those who could understand him to know that he was right, and deep." So how has he accomplished this feat? By simplifying, as his editor says, without oversimplifying. He turns his own lack of intimate knowledge to his advantage by concentrating on the core elements of Aquinas' thinking: his affirmation of the goodness of creation; his defense of common sense; and "the primacy of the doctrine of being." In this way he grasps--and helps us grasp--the importance of Aquinas for us today. As Raymond Dennehy has written, it's as if Chesterton is saying to us "the truths [Aquinas] was getting at--the basic principles of reality and reason--are in themselves really quite simple. Your basic intuitions were right all along." --Doug Thorpe

Chesterton himself is very modest about writing about a saint and philosopher without going very deeply into either philosophy or theology:"... It is the fate of this sketch to be sketchy about philosophy, scanty or rather empty about theology, and to achieve little more than a decent silence on the subject of sanctity. And yet it must none the less be the recurrent burden of this little book, to which it must return with some monotony, that in this story the philosophy did depend on the theology, and the theology did depend on the sanctity. In other words, it must repeat the first fact, which was emphasised in the first chapter: that this great intellectual creation was a Christian and Catholic creation and cannot be understood as anything else."Which is why I give it four stars instead of five. GKC, for all his beef with Macaulay, really does write like a Tory, or Catholic Macaulay, namely with brilliance, but sometimes without seriousness:"... Against all this the philosophy of St. Thomas stands founded on the universal common conviction that eggs are eggs. The Hegelian may say that an egg is really a hen, because it is a part of an endless process of Becoming; the Berkeleian may hold that poached eggs only exist as a dream exists; since it is quite as easy to call the dream the cause of the eggs as the eggs the cause of the dream; the Pragmatist may believe that we get the best out of scrambled eggs by forgetting that they ever were eggs, and only remembering the scramble. [...]The Thomist stands in the broad daylight of the brotherhood of men, in their common consciousness that eggs are not hens or dreams or mere practical assumptions; but things attested by the Authority of the Senses, which is from God."... but this sort of fooling is not typical. For the most part, the paradoxes and contrarian views are genuinely thought provoking, and if the book only hints at philosophy, it deals with medieval history, comparative religion and modern conventional wisdom (which hasn't changed all that much since 1933) very well. At any rate, this is a point still worth making:"... He may not be a Liberal by the extreme demands of the moderns for we seem always to mean by the moderns the men of the last century, rather than this. He was very much of a Liberal compared with the most modern of all moderns for they are nearly all of them turning into [.. not gonna say it...]. But the point is that he obviously preferred the sort of decisions that are reached by deliberation rather than despotic action; and while, like all his contemporaries and coreligionists, he has no doubt that true authority may be authoritative, he is rather averse to the whole savour of its being arbitrary."

Chesterton is such a wonderfully fluid writer who draws one into the story immediately. I loved his work on St. Thomas He states on p. 123, "He was not a person who wanted nothing; and he was a person who was enormously interested in everything. His answer is not so inevitable or simple at some may suppose. As compared with many other saints, and many other philosophers, he was avid in his acceptance of Things; in his hunger and thirst for Things. It was his special spiritual thesis that there are really are things and not only Thing;that the many existed as well as the One." Chesterton's understanding of St. Francis is equally as profound and one that calls us to mediation and contemplation."To read Sacred Scripture is to turn to Christ for advice."

St. Thomas Aquinas was nicknamed "The Dumb Ox" not because he was stupid, but because he didn't talk very much. According to many, he was the greatest philosopher between Aristotle and Descartes. An example of his silence was the night he was more or less forced to dine with the French King, the universally-beloved St. Louis. Royal dinners were not his style, and he sat silently while the French nobility did their "witty conversation" thing. There was a pause in the "witty conversation," and St. Thomas suddenly smashed his fist down on the table, exclaiming, "THAT should settle the Manichees!!"The other guests stared dumbfounded at this horrible breach of etiquette, but the King was smart enough to send two secretaries around to St. Thomas, to make sure he didn't lose that thought. This volume also contains another Chesterton masterpiece, his life of St. Francis.I am not a Catholic, not even a Christian, but I found a lot of stuff in these biographies which makes a LOT more sense than what Atheists Inc. have brought to America and Europe. I'd much rather listen to a Te Deum than watch "reality TV," for example. And these two short biographies are worth your time because they are an excellent visit with Dr. Sanity.

This edition surprised me by being in a large format. I've read Chesterton's "St. Thomas Aquinas: The Dumb Ox" several times and never cease to enjoy it. Not only does Chesterton give you a penetrating sketch of Thomas Aquinas but he gives you a sense of the struggle to put neo-Platonism and Aristotelian moderate realism in balance. No less an authority than Etienne Gilson, the foremost Thomistic scholar of the 20th century said of it: "I consider it as being without possible comparison the best book ever written on St. Thomas. Nothing short of genius can account for such an achievement." In a letter he wrote to Father Kevin Scannell, a priest of the diocese of Leeds, he said: "G.K. always argues from his intellectual perception of truth, never towards it. In the case of Thomas Aquinas — a mere incident in his colossal production — I always feel him nearer the real Thomas than I am after reading and teaching the Angelic Doctor for sixty years."It is hard to imagine higher praise from a better source. My own sense of this little book is that it is an indispensable portal to Thomistic studies, a book that at once is easily accessible and illuminates Aquinas like no other.
