the book is great .. I'm highlighting and making notes in the margins .. it gives a great overview of the historical evolution of Taoist thought and it tries very hard to explain Taoism for dummies like me. The author is entertaining. I love his sidebars and pop culture anecdotes. I'm from a western Christian world view with some new age influences tossed in. it is interested to see the actual roots from which the new age plucked ideologies and ideas. I certainly have a new appreciation for Taoism but to say that "I get it" maybe not. Does anybody?

If you're interested in Taoism but don't know a lot, then this book is for you. It is comprehensive and easy to read, filled with information about Taoism developments, beliefs and practices. Taoism for Dummies gives an engaging account of the beginnings and growth of Taoism, which is much richer than a simple reading of the Tao de Ching led me to believe it would be. If you want to broaden your knowledge about Taoism, I wholeheartedly recommend Taoism for Dummies.

This is a terrific book. Don't be put off by the "Dummies" part. It's a very well written and comprehensive intro to Taoism. Two thumbs up1

Very entertaining read with greatly explains knowledge in an easy to understand presentation

Heard good things about these books cant wait to start reading.

Excellent tool for teaching Daoism to my World Religions students. Great balance of Chinese contemporary practices with Western iterations of the religion. Combined with Prothero's God is Not One, you could pretty much get a handle on this complex religious landscape. Only complaint I have: author takes the Western-centric position that even if the Chinese are confident that Laozi existed, that the Chinese rubric for historical substantiation is bunk. He never existed as far as this, and many Western academics are concerned. We white folk love to think we are smarter than our ancestors (e.g. claiming Shakespeare didn't exist) and definitely smarter than the ancestors of Persons of Color (e.g. Laozi and Zhuangzi never existed).

Pretty heavy on philosophy for a book intended for general audiences. I wouldn't read this book alone if seeking more info on taoism or other eastern religions. Very good for understanding context of said religions.

Taoism for Dummies, written in the perfect style of the For Dummies series, is enlightening, digressive, humorous, and truly educational! It invites connections between many different kinds of thought and ways of thinking, and gives the reader a really fun ride and an excellent overview of Taoism at once. It's a good time, this book! The whole idea of being a Dummy is a relief! When you don't have to pretend to know everything, you can fall into a deep ease and enjoy learning!

... and wished it were longer!! Sean has taken what could have been a very dry, monotonous litany of sightings and turned it into a very readable, very enjoyable ramble through Australia looking at birds. As very much an amateur bird photographer and watcher, I appreciate the efforts made by the author to get to see the birds on his list; what an undertaking it must have been even if he treated the efforts involved with glib prose and humour! Well done, sir - you are an inspiration to me! I know I shall never have the opportunity to see an awful lot of these birds, but reading this, I at least have gained an insight into what it takes to do so....

I really enjoyed this book. Whether you love birds or not, it was a great story about making decisions and persevering. Very readable and accessible, the reminisces were funny and I loved the bird descriptions and terminology. Would recommend if you like a a bit of a laugh and birds, of course!

A birder after my own heart. I Became obsessed with his list and what he needed for that list. I wish I'd had an Australian bird guide so I could see what he was looking for.

My second reading of this book but it is because of this book that I became a "twitcher". Humorous from the start to the finish and would have an appeal to even the non-birding people in our communities. Makes me want to go birding more & more! It is about obsession, travel, conservation & the wonderful characters of our country. Loved it!!

As a birder, I find Sean's story fascinating, humorous, and entertaining!

If you are a birder, this is a wonderful account of one man's quest to be the "best birder" in Australia. Similar to The Big Year.

Who would have thought that a book about twitching would be such a good read for a non-twitcher. The book is given dramatic impetus by the author's mission to see as many species as possible in one calendar year. Ok, you'll read about more birds than you ever knew existed (or wanted to know), but the style is engaging,self-deprecating and picks the highlights (and lowlights?) of the big twitch. Ok, it does help if you have some interest in birds or birdwatching, if you know a twitcher, it might help you understand them...
