First is that i love science fiction and fantasy but i also would love some erotic romance in those stories. Science fiction and fantasy writers are for the most part clueless when it comes to writing good erotic romance and that's my problem in finding satisfying stories and authors to read. With the author of this story i have found the combination i was looking for and her stories are alot of fun for the kind of people with an open mind. The plot of this story concerns an insecure young mam that feels that he has lost everything worth living for until he remember his friend a strong and beautiful woman that is about to change his life forever in a fun filled erotic adventure. Well my first book, lost my real cherry 58 years ago! Enough about me. I love this book for several reasons: 1. LOTS of sex 2. The characters are pretty realistic, especially when you view them on her website, they are hot but not supermodels 3. Did I mention LOTS of sex? Try it, you'll like it.

Enjoyed the storyline even with main dude being needier than usual, great encounters but as always wish it was longer and really hope for a continuation of the story! Highly recommended

This novel presented a reality test for me. Detective Ruiz is a man of at least 60 years (he told us he was on the police for 43 years) who has been in a coma for eight days due to a bullet wound in his leg where the exit wound is a large as a pie pan. And then, after his time in the coma, he begins his extremely physical escapades in the sewers of London and the muck of the Thames. Can you visualize the physical demands and the threat of infection?But regardless, I liked the book because the writing is good, the characters are developed and the plot is well paced for most of the book.Tying Ruiz's childhood trauma to the case he is working on brought empathy to the gruff, hardened character of Ruiz who I did enjoy.The time in the sewers is overdone and slows the pace of the novel. But the writing is realistic because I found myself grimacing and holding my breath at the thought of a trip through those vile, disgusting tunnels under London.Good job, Mr. Robotham. I have ordered your third book.

In this second novel in the series about Joe O’Loughlin, Robotham gives us the first twist by making DI Ruiz the narrator. It is actually Ruiz’s story with O’Loughlin as a side character.The novel opens with Ruiz suffering from amnesia after being shot. As he recovers and slowly regains his memory, the reader discovers what happened along with him. I liked this device. It made this book a page turner and made it harder to predict where the story was going.The only flaws are the abundance of characters that were a little difficult to keep straight, and the couple of times the author forgot Ruiz’s condition, having him do things that would have been hard for a man with a wounded leg.This book kept me gripped and with its fast pace was an easy read. I look forward to the next in the series.This one gets four stars.

Written from the first person perspective of Vincent Ruiz, the Detective Inspector determined to find Joe guilty in Suspect, it commences with Ruiz clinging to a yellow buoy in the middle of the Thames, dazed, confused and shot. Admitted to hospital and placed in a coma, when Ruiz awakes, he has no memory of the events leading up to his immersion in the river or his wounds, only that it's somehow connected to a previous case of an abducted girl, a Russian criminal, a child molester and a grieving mother. With the help of his friend, psychologist, Joe O'Loughlin and a young policewoman, Alisha Barba, Ruiz has to not only piece together aspects of the old case, but recover his memories and discover who it is that's not only trying to frame him for crimes he didn't commit, but sabotage his career as well.At first I didn't think I was going to enjoy this book as much as I have the others in the Joe O'Loughlin series. For a start, I found it hard to get used to Ruiz as the first person point of view. His tone grated and I was still smarting from his attitude in Suspect (yes, I take these characters very seriously). However, as the novel went on, I became immersed in this psychological jigsaw, how the characters both divulged and withheld information, enabling or preventing Ruiz from discovering the information he so desperately needs. I also really enjoyed seeing Joe through Ruiz's eyes, witnessing his admiration and the almost begrudging warmth he feels for a man he once tried to arrest. Gaining insight into Ruiz's past as well as the relationship he has with his mother and children, why his marriages have failed and how he perceives himself were simultaneously poignant and downright tragic.Once more, the prose is sharp, evocative and moving. Dialogue crackles and is often laugh out loud funny and wise-arse. Ruiz's repartee is "take-no-prisoners" and yet, just as he can out-smart-alec the best of them, he's also capable of deep compassion. Likewise, in seeing Joe from another perspective, we also come to learn how his insights really do nurture and support those he offers them to and the type of reliable and ethical friend he can be. It was also nice to see Julianne through another man's eyes as well as Charlie and Emma. But it's in his fight for justice and peace of mind that Ruiz shines. Brave and loyal to a fault, there's no risk he won't take and literally no stone he'll leave unturned. As you would expect from the title, the notion of being "lost' is a theme of the novel - from losing one's memory, to a beloved, to one's place in the world - as a part of a family, position in society or career. The converse of lost is "found" and it's in the "finding" - the whys and wherefores of what is a physical, psychological and mental process - that the book draws its narrative trajectory, meaning and, ultimately, strength.Terrific, this is a fast-paced book that gives a new and fuller picture of O'Loughlin's world from a beloved character's point of view.

Note: I was privileged to hear the first chapter of this novel when it was finished at a Hedgebrook residency (we all cheered), and this particular review is based on an advance copy of the book, where I finally got to find out what happened to Charlie and his family. :)Someday Birds is a charming, bird-laden adventure tale that explores both family trip dynamics and the progress of a young boy in facing what makes him most anxious, and what makes him most himself.Charlie is the middle brother in a family of four – 2 10-year-old twin brothers, and teenaged elder sister – and the narrator of this tale. His father, a journalist injured in Afghanistan, is transferred for medical care to the other side of the country. The only other caregiver, Grandma, goes with the father – and then adventures ensue as the kids determine they will not be left behind in the hands of mysterious pink-haired Ludmila.What makes this book so powerful from the get-go is Charlie’s engaging voice and the lens with which he views the world consistently, perfectly, and always a bit askew. We understand that he is fascinated by birds, and his bird guru, Tiberius Shaw, will maintain a central current running through the group (after all Someday Birds is the title). But it’s the little things Charlie notices – from the idiosyncracies of bad rest stops to the perfection of the perfect chicken nuggets to the way that even translated emotions don’t stay translated- that make this book a marvel. Charlie’s voice is perfect to the task of leading us cross-country with his siblings, and it’s not really the destination (Dad’s hospital bed) that makes this book, it’s the journey we take with Charlie as our guide that makes the experience.Another aspect of the book that gives it deeper complexity and warmth is the development of Ludmila’s character and the unveiling of why she seems so fascinated with Charlie’s father and willing to help the children make the cross-country trip. Her network of friends in different places, and the aptly told opening dynamics between her and the children as they compete for the father’s attention in the hospital set the stage for interesting revelations.I highly recommend Someday Birds for middle grade readers and the adults that care about them.

A compelling, poignant and funny tale as appealing to adults as to the middle school children to whom the book is targeted. I bought this book for my 10 year old nephew but read it myself before giving it to him. I fell in love with Charlie -- and the book -- from the first pages. All the characters are finely drawn but Charlie ... well, Charlie is the most touching character since Oskar in Jonathan Safran Foer's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Both boys are on a journey, far outside their comfort zone, and find that it's by reaching out and forming relationships that they unfurl their inner selves, find their wings and begin to soar. There is lots of warmth and humor as Charlie and his slightly kooky family embark on a cross-country journey and come together to bond, heal and grow.For children who feel a little bit different from others, for jumbled-up families who care about each other but don't know how to show it, for parents and grandparents who ache for the child they love and understand that it's our differences that enrich us all, this book is a treasure.

I know this book is aimed for younger audiences, but my Book Club read it and it was a lovely story and inspiring, too. We e had a great discussion about Charlie's journey both across the country and his journey as a more mature individual. Charlie is a boy on the Autism Spectrum and lives with a family where you grow to love each character. Pla is a gifted writer and paints a picture of their family's life. I loved how Charlie made a list of "Someday Birds" he wanted to see and share with his dad who was injured and hospitalized on the east coast. His journey finding these birds makes you cheer for every one he finds. My only disappointment was that he did not stop at the Horicon Marsh in Wisconsin, one of the greatest birding sites in the world. This is a book of hope and I would strongly recommend it.

As the mother of a child on the autism spectrum, I applaud Sally Pla, not just for writing such a heartfelt, touching story, but for her honest, respectful depiction of Charlie. Charlie has OCD/ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). His routine is suddenly uprooted when his siblings and their mysterious babysitter Ludmila go on a cross-country trip to be with Charlie’s father in a hospital in Virginia. Charlie’s world assaults him on their cross country road trip. New smells, foods, people, and experiences are thrust upon him. Along the way, Charlie adopts a three-legged dog that he names after his bird guru hero, Tiberius Shaw; the dog smells, but that’s okay. In fact, a lot of things that would have upset Charlie before are suddenly becoming a little easier to bear. Sally’s honest writing makes Charlie’s inner thoughts, anxieties, and compassion ring true throughout this charming page-turner.

I finished the last pages of THE SOMEDAY BIRDS with a lump in my throat. What a heartfelt debut. I loved every moment I spent on this zany, cross-country journey with Charlie and his family in a clunky camper called "Old Bess". This books touches on so much, I'm not even sure where to start - history, geography, neurodiversity, war, family, and the handling of nature with the utmost care. And while some parts are yes, heavy, Pla never leaves her readers feeling hopeless. She treats every topic with grace and respect. I loved Charlie's voice, his deadpan wit, and his literal view of the world. But the real gem I gleamed from birding with Charlie is that life is hard, but there is always hope.

This is one of the finest books that I have read in my entire life. I read this book when I was in my late teens and at that time the entire "Cosmic Trilogy" of C.S. Lewis had a great impact on me and my spiritual life. Just recently, about forty years later, I felt a strong urge to re-read the book. This second reading was even more moving than the first time I read the book. I intend to continue reading the other two books "Perelandra" and "That Hidden Strength". C.S. Lewis had the ability to write about the fabulous and unbelievable, in other words in this trilogy about voyages to other planets and encounters with the planet's inhabitants, just like J.R.R. Tolkien had the ability to write about fairies, hobbits, elves, orcs, and such! Both men were blessed with the incredible gift of being able to write about fantastical and imaginary characters and to bring them to live in their books, and in doing so, conveying from the heart of the author to the heart of the reader the most lovely spiritual revelation. Often more can be taught through fiction than the most scholarly and academic non-fiction books. I believe this is because God is love and light, and so we need men and women who can open our hearts to the love and our minds to the light, to teach us about true reality. “Like when you sit in front of a fire in winter — you are just there in front of the fire. This is my favorite of the space trilogy, because Lewis uses his considerable talents to reimagine a familiar story. It's experimental and combines the mythic, the theological, the speculative, and science fiction, with some fairy tale as well, and everyday humor and political commentary. We've got a thriller, too, and artistic contemplation of the Beautiful and Pure. So much going on! I'd call this the artist's book of the three, with the first the everyday citizen's work and the third the scientist/philosopher/prophet's work. Lewis sets the ground work in Out of the Silent Planet (Space Trilogy), flies into realms of imagination with PERELANDRA, and brings it all heavily (and heavenly) home in That Hideous Strength (Space Trilogy, Book 3). You might find one title appeals to you particularly, but allow the others to stretch your imagination and speculation. The variety here is what a book series OUGHT to have, not just reiterations of the same story over and again. The three novels combine to give a story as complex as the universe we inhabit.

I rate this book 5-stars in context as the second book of the trilogy. I wrote a 5-star Goodreads review of C. S. Lewis' entire space trilogy when I completed the 3rd book "That Hideous Strength." Here is that Goodreads review: WHICH FOLLOWS: I just finished reading all three of CS Lewis' Space Trilogy back-to-back (published in 1938, 1943, and 1945) over the past few weeks. First caution, don't start with the 3rd book in the trilogy. The trilogy is a masterpiece, but jumping into the 3rd book will seriously shortchange what you will understand if you read all three in order. Second caution, don't start with the 2nd book in the trilogy. The series geometrically builds the cast, plot, and stakes book-by-book. A shortcut only shortchanges you. That said, this magnificent trilogy builds a fictional setting of interlocking stories that culminate, in the third, by illustrating that hideous strength which Lewis later describes in the tiny prose book: The Abolition of Man (1947). My interest in reading the trilogy after reading The Abolition of Man was piqued by the first of the seven (highest-quality HD) video lecture series on C. S. Lewis, all of which are presented free and streaming: just google "Hillsdale College C. S. Lewis lecture one" and enjoy this incredibly generous series. For the purpose of this book review, and for your greatest enjoyment, don't go past video lecture one and its Q&A session, but go from there to read The Abolition of Man (one-hour read), then the space trilogy in order. After you're done, return to the free lecture series 2 through 7. In this order you'll maximize enjoyment of this banquet, without any spoilers.

Most people have read and enjoyed the Narnia stories from C. S. Lewis, but the Space Trilogy is the one that I keep coming back to. The stories are more adult, and still filled with his impassioned Christianity. In part one, Out of the Silent Planet, we meet Dr. Ransom, the protagonist for the series, who is kidnapped and brought to the planet Mars. There we find that each of the planets hosts an Eldil or Angel responsible for that planet. Our planet, the silent one, no longer converses with the others because our angel is the bent one.Part two, Perelandra, re tells the Adam and Eve story, but it is part three that keeps me coming back. Part three, That Hideous Strength, is simply the best book that I have read that nobody seems to have heard of.I can heartily recommend this book or this series to anyone who likes science fiction. I'm not particularly Christian, but I can appreciate that the author is.

Unable to put it down, which is a wonderful thing. I'm traveling Malacandra with Ransom, what an adventure and described in such vivid detail. I absolutely love the Narnia series (read it a few times), and was very much surprised when I learned about this series a week ago. No spoilers here, but if you like C.S. Lewis' other works, you'll definitely enjoy this.I'll update once I finish the series. I only wish the book I purchased was three separate books, rather it is one BIG book containing all three of the stories.Kinda challenging lugging it around on the train. The only time I can put the book down is when my train reaches my stop, far too quickly!

About the Author

Peter D. Polchinski is the Senior Trial Attorney for McGivney & Kluger in New York City. He was a homicide prosecutor for the Manhattan District Attorney s Office and National Trial Counsel for a company in asbestos litigation. He was also trial counsel for the families of the pilots in the Avianca Air Disaster case. He developed and has taught six Continuing Legal Education courses, was Chief Instructor for the Hofstra Law School Summer Trial Course, and teaches in the Manhattan District Attorney s Trial Advocacy Program. A graduate of Suffolk County Community College and Stony Brook University, he received his J.D. from Fordham University School of Law and an LL.M. in Trade Regulation from New York University School of Law.
