this is a nice book with bright colors, plain background and clear pictures. The size is perfect for little hands and it is sturdy enough to survive being kicked, bite, step on , thrown ...My baby loves cars and trucks , he even has his favorite picture .But just a warning , the title of this book is misleading because there is very little to touch . most pictures have shiny or sparkly paper but just 3 or 4 have texture and they don't cover much area.In my case it didn't matter much because my kid really enjoys the book but when I bought it was expecting more textures .

This book is not a sensory experience at all. Most pages have sparkly portions of trucks and the ones that have an actual item to "touch" are so very small even my little guy's tiny fingers can hardly feel, let's not discuss how his nine month old fingers and brain don't quite communicate properly every time to follow the small area of material available for touching.Do not bother for the sensory experience with this book

All of a sudden this has become one of my son's favorite books. He's around 17 months and it's been his favorite for the past couple months - prior to that he could have cared less about it. Perhaps it's the age, because he also enjoys another touchy feely book with fur animals.Each page just has one word and words that describe the sound (ie. fire truck / wee-noo wee-noo). A very short book, but seems to be perfect for the short attention span toddlers have. He can't sit through a Dr. Seuss or short story anymore, but he can sit for several minutes just flipping the pages of this several page book and touching a few of the pages.I would have given it 5 stars if there was more to touch - I'd say every other page there is something you can touch that has a texture that stands out (corrugated cardboard, "hay" that is textured, sticky concrete) but the rest of the pages just have shiny material or nothing really textured to touch. And the areas to touch are really small. My son enjoys the corrugated cardboard (we say "scratchy scratchy") and he likes to put his finger on the sticky concrete.

That can both be good and bad, but it doesn't seem to bother my son too much as he now has a greater variety of his beloved trucks to view. This series of books seems expensive for what you're getting, but they do well quickly becoming well-worn favorites of the younger children. The construction is not bad, though my son has decimated all of them, mostly from love...I think. They do have some chew marks as well, come to think of it, but this should not suggest that the books themselves are tasty. They are not...I'm pretty sure.

Captivating. Particularly impressed at author's ability to articulate the actual Fire Truck sound in text. Without spoiling it for the reader- must read.

My 1 year old loves this book. The touch and feel books are great to keep kiddos interested!

My 10 month old loves touch and feel books. I been searching for some that have a lot of things that are interesting to touch. There were a few in this book. Most of the things were just okay to touch. Some were neat though. One felt sticky another like sand paper. My son likes both of these. He also likes looking at the bright pictures of different kinds of trucks found through out the book. It's a decent book to add to our collection of touch and feel books.

I was disappointed in this book because a number of the pages only have shiny material which is hardly distinguishable from the regular page. I expected more from a "touch and feel" book.

This is my first review even after years and thousands of dollars in purchases on Amazon. I felt I owed it to the author after finally feeling thrilled with a cookbook purchase.As an aspiring "home chef" without talent or experience, I've bought dozens of cookbooks hoping to find one that would enable me to create cuisine, not just mundane meals. Sadly, I have been let down countless times. Sure, my lack of cooking skills puts me at a huge disadvantage, but I'm not buying complex books. I tried to stick with cookbooks that focused on the novice. In the end, my dishes looked nothing like the photos, tasted nothing like the description, and left me with little more than dirty dishes and buyer's remorse.The Steamy Kitchen Cookbook changed that for me. I've now cooked six meals from within these pages and every single one of them left me literally smiling at first bite. Just like one of those corny food commercials. :) Here's why:1. The ingredients were all found at my local supermarket...unlike books that sent me to far away places in search of obscure spices that I'd never use again.2. The book was fun to read, kept my attention, and gave me insight like no other cookbook had given me in the past. Most just started right in with the recipes, leaving me with more questions than answers. Unlike the Steamy Kitchen, they focused on the "how" without ever addressing the "why".3. The steps were easy to follow, the dishes easy to prepare, and the end result actually matched the photos. The other cookbooks I bought should have come with a sous chef because I was way out of my element. I never realized how inadequate they were until I read and followed this book.4. The flavors were solid, delicious, and spot-on. I couldn't believe I made these meals. They seemed complex to the taste but they were actually quite easy to make. I wasn't the only one in our family raving about the food I cooked. If you knew me, you'd know how incredible that is.The Scallops & Fruit Salsa...amazing. The Salmon with Cucumber Relish...amazing (I used her 250-degree slow-cook method instead of steaming). The Crab Cakes...best I have EVER tasted. I could go on and on. And I will, in my kitchen, until I've cooked every meal in the book.If you are hesitant to purchase this book...don't be. Even if you actually ARE a chef, unlike me, you'll find the dishes and flavors to be divine. But if you're a hazard waiting to happen in the kitchen, like me, this book will literally motivate you to keep trying.Yeah...it's that good.

If you've never heard of Jaden Hair or cooked any of her online recipes, let me just tell you right here and now that her cookbook will not disappoint you. Full of amazing and beautiful full color photos for each recipe, you can decide what you want to make for dinner this week simply by feasting with your eyes.For years, I used this beef broccoli recipe I'd found online and when I tried Jaden's beef broccoli recipe, my husband simply looked up at me after the first bite and said it was the best beef broccoli I'd ever made. When I made it for my in-laws, they absolutely loved it.Jaden gives you very great instructions and also writes with the same quirky, cute, and friendly tone as she does online. This is the kind of cookbook I absolutely adore, because the photography makes it something you can look through not only for recipes but for visual representation and her writing style really makes you feel as though you've got a friend in the kitchen. After cooking several of her recipes, I'm pretty much convinced that nothing in her cookbook will taste less than amazing.

Great Asian cookbook, but it came up as a "people who bought this also purchased this" item when I bought my steamer....and there is not a single steamer recipe in the book, well maybe a couple of dimsum dumpling recipes :) Since I love Asian food I'm not upset to get it, but I was really looking forward to getting a good cookbook for my new steamer.

I love Jaden Hair's "Steamy Kitchen CookBook". I first discovered her recipe for Mama's Famous EggRoll while surfing the net for egg roll recipes. I like the step by step photos and her comic sense of humor, as she instructs the readers on why you have to follow it step by step instructions. Her book has excelllent photos, including those of her beautiful family. The cook book is full of helpful, guiding tips, including such things as how to best cut up fresh ginger and advice on what kind of cookingware and ingredients to use. I love her comments on how other chefs have influenced her own cooking. I'm excited to starting trying some of her recipes.

This book is amazing. I want to try each recipe. I love there is a picture for each recipe so I know how the finished product should look. The only negative is where it takes about the tools and various ingredients, there are no pictures, so if you don't know what the tool or ingredient is, you are lost or need to go look it up.As I stated above, I didn't see any recipe in this book, I do not want to make.

So this is a great book. Jaden Hair illustrates how to make some great asian inspired dishes. Some of the recipes are incredibly easy, but many would take you a little longer or have too many ingredients to make it simple enough for a weekday meal for a family with a busy schedule. But if you are looking for a book with some great asian inspired recipes that will surely satisfy your family and you dont mind putting in a little elbow grease, here is your book. The book is beautifuly illustrated and easily explains through pictures, how to do more complex tasks, step by step. Only a few of her recipes contained ingredients that I thought may be hard to find outside of the asian grocery store, however, I had no problem finding any of them in my local grocer. Buy the book! You will enjoy it.

Both Boys were able to repeat the story back to their Mom and Dad. The whole idea of having a new book read every night leading up to Christmas, was a hit and will be continue next year!!! Of the commentaries I've read of Nagarjuna's masterpiece in the last several years, Mabja's commentary is probably the most useful overall for understanding the treatise in its own terms, with Jay Garfield's modern commentary in his "Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way" a close second.The works I have read carefully include Sprung's translation of Chandrakirti's commentary "Clear Words," Garfield's aforementioned commentary, Stephen Batchelor's close, literal translation of the root text, Batchelor's liberal interpretation of the text in "Verses from the Center," and the superb translation of Tsong Khapa's "Ocean of Reasoning" by Jay Garfield and Geshe Ngawang Samten.For me, two considerations make Mabja's commentary stand apart: first, he gives a very clear sense of how Nagarjuna's argument progresses and builds over the work, proceeding systematically in analyzing a number of possible counter-positions to his own thesis that all phenomena arise dependently, and are therefore empty of intrinsic nature. Second, unlike Tsong Khapa's prolix commentary, he sticks very close to the root text itself, as a whole. While Tsong Khapa's primary concern is interpreting Nagarjuna as the basis for a far more elaborate Madhyamaka system elaborated by his subsequent interpreters, such as Buddhapalita and Chandrakirti, Mabja's commentary, while benefiting from those commentators, is principally concerned with analyzing each verse to clarify what exactly is being said in any given line - what the argument is, and who, if anyone, the likely target of refutation is. For as this commentary makes clear, many of the views that Nagarjuna analyzes and refutes are positions held by various Indian Buddhist and non-Buddhist schools.For me personally, no individual commentary has been sufficient to understand every verse of the cryptic root text, and at times I've had to consult two, three, or even four commentaries to understand what was being said on a basic level. And I must say, I think sometimes Mabja gets a few things rather wrong. Generally where he differs from Tsong Khapa, I find Tsong Khapa to make the more persuasive and coherent reading.This commentary is exceedingly well translated into readable English, but I would be remiss if I did not point out some fairly serious deficits of this edition. First it includes no useful information about the author, Mabja Jangchub Tsöndru, who goes virtually unmentioned in the existing English-language scholarship on Indo-Tibetan Madhyamaka, with the exception of a handful of scholarly articles. They mention almost nothing in the introduction of his context, lineage, life, teachers, or the subsequent reception of his work. I gather he was an early writer in the Sakya lineage, and he appears to be well known within the Tibetan tradition itself - Jose Cabezon and Georges Dreyfus offer effusive praise of the commentary in their cover blurbs, and the Kunu Lama is reported to have called this the best Nagarjuna commentary there is due to its clarity.A second glaring omission is the absence of a Sanskrit or Tibetan glossary, and the complete absence of parenthetical references to technical terms on their occurrence. There are a variety of obscure technical terms or names of Buddhist schools where the reader is left guessing what the Tibetan or Sanskrit could be, because of this rather gross omission. Instead, the book includes a strange appendix including a kind of flow chart of the arguments made in each chapter, which I find entirely useless. I would have far preferred a three-page glossary.Third, and related to the above, there are no footnotes or endnotes whatsoever. Mabja's commentary is indeed quite clear, but there are nonetheless very technical analyses of logical arguments, forms of negation, and such which would have benefitted greatly from a two-sentence gloss.These are the basic tools of translation, and their absence is baffling. I can only hope that someone at the Dharmachakra Translation Committee reads this book and rethinks their editorial policy - the failure to include these resources really harms this otherwise-outstanding work.I highly recommend this book to people interested in wrestling with the Fundamental Treatise - I consider it to be the greatest work of religious philosophy I have yet encountered in the whole of our human heritage.Update: a bit more on MabjaBefore writing this review I checked a number of major sources on Tibetan Madhyamaka looking for more information on Mabja and was unable to find anything besides a citation to an article by Paul Williams published in the Journal of Indian Philosophy. However, I just stumbled across a useful reference to Mabja in a translation of the Sakya master Gorampa's polemical work "Distinguishing the Views" translated by Jose Cabezon and Geshe Lobsang Dargay as "Freedom from Extremes."In this work, Gorampa identifies three positions with respect to Madhyamaka in Tibet - one epitomized by the Jonangpa yogi Dolpopa, which Gorampa considers to be an eternalist perspective; another represented by Tsong Khapa, which Gorampa considers to be a nihilist perspective; and a correct approach which avoids both extremes, which he identifies with several Tibetan scholars, including Mabja.In Gorampa's view, this correct interpretation of Madhyamaka rejects all possible positions with respect to existence, and thus is the only view that accepts the full implications of the tetralemma, which rejects existence, non-existence, both, and neither. According to this reading, Dolpopa errs in asserting the true establishment of ultimate truth, while Tsong Khapa errs by rejecting true establishment altogether.Leaving aside a critique of this reading of Tsong Khapa, which I consider a gross caricature, it still gives us useful signal on how Mabja was situated among Tibetan positions by at least one important Sakya author.In a valuable footnote, Cabezon and Dargay review some biographical problems and discrepancies in Tibetan and European scholarly sources on Mabja and conclude it is very difficult to say much about him at all. The few fragmentary references he has turned up seem to conflate or confuse different figures with similar names.This one footnote tells the reader far more about Mabja than anything found in "Ornament of Reason." In my view, this is a very serious omission.

Having bought and read many of Nagarjuna's translations with and without the obligatory Commentaries on It... I was really in no need to get another. Even at a great price. I also did not know of the the Acharya, Mabja Jangchub Tsöndrü. He is not gone over in any detail, to my dismay, in this book. The way this was written was to explain the main text with very little, if any elaboration, unlike some later Scholars. In great and very understandable detail. Usually, in many commentaries, there are tangents that are brought up as though they are The Original Intent of Nagarjuna, being nonsecular and nonsectarian, that is my opinion.There may be some of that here, yet it is as minimal as it is going to get in any Tibetan text.Even if you are quite versed in the Tibetan works ofTsongKhapa through Mipham, I think this will be a good addition.I really can not advise of another text for someone who has zeroexposure to this subject, This is pretty detailed, but if you arenot familiar with the dialectic etc.. it may be a bit daunting, asI think just about any other translation would be.It seems as though most of the Points made tend to get more convincing as the chapters progress..that is, Chapter 2, "Going and Coming" in all translations can seem to be a bit too much for the beginner who may, like me, be steeped in a Western mindset... keep moving on, It does get easier to digest the Point of View being expressed.If it gets difficult to see what is being said, just move on.At any rate, you get the original text explained so well and detailed, that there really is not much doubt as to what Madhymaka was. Even the opponents' views are articulated so clearly...which is rare.. you usually really have to have a good grasp of their arguments before hand, or it is unclear as to what They are proposing and opposing. I wish this would have come out 20 years ago. I think any one can grasp this text, with effort & desire. The text is Very smart without being egg headed. Lastly, very high quality as we have come to expect from Snow Lion. Very readable font.To get a better grasp on Mabja and the evolution of Madhymaka pleasesee "Resurrecting Candrakirti: Disputes in the Tibetan Creation of Prasangika (Studies in Indian and Tibetan Buddhism)Vose, Kevin A." It's selling at a good prices currently.

I learned from this book that a substantial literature of post-surveillance memoirs exists. I haven't read them, so perhaps my enthusiasm for this book is tainted by not having anything to compare it to. But I really enjoyed the book, and recommend it.My Life as a Spy is an ethnographic memoir by an anthropologist, well known for her research in Romania while it was part of the Soviet bloc, in the 1970s and 1980s. In the 2000s she received her 2000+-page secret police file, which showed how extensively she had been surveilled during that time, and how many of her friends and acquaintances had been compelled to spy on her.The importance of this book lies not in the revelations the dossier contains --- interesting though they are-- but in the author's attempts to make sense of it all. Verdery brings an open and clear-eyed seriousness to the task. Although not a page-turner, the book is highly readable with only a few traces of academic jargon.She devotes one long chapter to each of the two decades (the 70s and 80s) she conducted fieldwork in Romania, reading the secret file against her own fieldnotes, her letters home, and her research at the time. Then, she devotes a long chapter to the people who informed on her. She meets with friends who informed on her and attempts to understand what their experience was. She even tracks down the state security officers who recruited the informants and kept an eye on her. (She procured her FBI file, too.) Finally, she briefly ruminates on surveillance in Romania in general, and in such a way that will help us think about surveillance in general, esp. our own ubiquitous surveillance today via the Internet and mobile telephony.There are no good guys and bad guys here, only a society that was profoundly structured by surveillance. It would be foolish of us to think that "old economy" surveillance is no longer relevant. There is much to learn from this book, even if you have no prior knowledge or, or academic interest in, Romania or the former Soviet Union. This is because the author skillfully and diligently carries you along on her own personal quest to understand herself, the people around her, and the political regime that had so many people spying on each other. It will open your mind.I hope that the author will elsewhere reflect on the knowledge she produced -- i.e., the scholarship she published -- through the lens of the surveillance culture in Romania. Did it make a difference to the questions she asked and the answers she found?

The author goes into considerable detail discussing and analyzing her experiences with Romania’s security services during her periods of academic research there in the 1970s and 1980s. Here assessment is greatly aided by her state security file, which she has access to after the fall of the Communist dictatorship that existed during her field work.Although she was simply doing research projects, the state security system believed her to be a spy and went to great lengths to spy on her – using over 80 informants as well as electronic surveillance (a hidden video camera in her room, tapped phone lines, etc). She was even spied on in the U.S. after she returned home from one of her visits. Her security file included over 2,000 pages.Her book weaves together her present day reflections and excerpts form her state case file, her letters home during her research visits, and her field notes. She includes interviews done in more recent years with some of the government’s informers (some of whom she had had close relationships with when working in their country) as well as with a couple of the members of the security forces that handled her case.With uncommon honesty and insight, and the gift of hindsight, she shares the naivety and insecurities of her younger self. She also shares her various emotions and thoughts related to discovering (1) the great lengths to which the authorities went to investigate her, and (2) the fact that close friends reported her every move to security officers.Her book offers a frightening look at life in a police state during the cold war, when anyone could be informing on anyone else, and when to be suspected of espionage meant all your friends and associates became suspect also and thus were put in danger. It also shows how security officials can find “evidence” of wrong doing by having a bias that leads them to misinterpret what they see.In her concluding sentence in the Epilogue, she writes, “…I hope to have illuminated something not only of how Romanian socialism worked but of the new forms of statecraft, promising greater security through ever-heightened surveillance, that are developing worldwide.” This is, as far as I could tell, the only reference to surveillance outside of Romania and I would have liked her to share a little more about this more global perspective.It is hard to rate this book. It is scholarly but also readable. I give it four stars instead of five because for the general reader, like myself, her thoroughness makes the book a bit tedious. I would have liked more summaries of things and less material to read through.

This book is absolutely beautiful.

For those of you who, like me, are fans of SLJ, this book and its charming illustrations does not disappoint. May we each learn to use our unique gifts and to thank the Giver.

Sweet story about not comparing yourself to others and using your own gifts which are unique.

My 3-year-old niece asked five times to have this read to her in a few hours' time. The story is sweet and profound, and the illustrations are beautiful.

Bought this for my 3 year old grand daughter. The story really kept her attention - which is hard to do! Hopefully it will become one of her favorites and the message will teach her life lessons.

Such beautiful illustrations! Perfect for our nursery!
