I should start by saying that I do not consider myself a "reader". I own maybe 20 books (which, thanks to books like this, only recently hit double digits. Don't judge me). I am not a huge history buff or collector of coffee table books. I don't enjoy reading, per say, and the fact that this is an advanced picture book for adults that ANYONE would appreciate, is a huge plus to me. I seriously cant think of any type of person, no matter their passions or prejudices, that would not enjoy (at the very least) skimming through this book... but I bet they cant do it without stopping to look at every page a little longer than they expected.I love architecture, and Other than appreciating great shopping, live theatre & the overall nostalgia of NYC, I have no real ties to the city... however, this book is one of my favorite possessions. It shows all of the great places & aspects of the city in pop-up, but what I love the most are the little "artifacts/ treasures" that are not part of the pop up page, but are secured in various places for you to take out and hold... for example, a small newspaper with important headlines, a broadway play bill, pamphlets about the ballet, etc. It is 100% worth $50 to get a mint condition version... just a few thoughts:1. If you are going to make sure you have the mint condition book, so that you have all the supplemental materials that are loose that are tucked inside the book in different ways... make sure that you do NOT let little kids play go through the book without you careful watching them. The little materials are way too tempting to not take back to their doll houses or tree forts or to draw a little person (you know, the ones with just a head, legs & arms... hahaha) on the cover of the booklet. I have a 5 & 8 year old, and I love them dearly... but I have no intentions of even telling them about this book for at least another 6 months. It is a coffee table book, for sure... unless you have kids... and then I would put it on the display shelf that's at eye level for company. Not kidding.2. There are so many little loose items with this book, I don't even know how many there are in total. I would guess 10-15? With that being said, just make sure you know what you are getting if you plan to pay more. If you can get a used version that has pages maybe a little bent, but has ALL loose items, and pop ups can be glued or taped to be like they originally were... then I would totally be on board with saving the money and getting the best deal possible. The book is so awesome, it wont matter that pages are a little worn... might actually make it even more authentic and add more character... if that's possible. This way, you have money left over to get another book I recommend!!3. This book is not at all politically driven or really even highlight the twin towers. Its a perfect, overall emersion in to the entire city. I would give it to someone that went to school in NYC, or ever lived there, or loves the arts or American history... or unique coffee table books (its pretty big in size, though). I would randomly give it as a gift to a college graduate, regardless of their school location or tie to NYC. I would give it as a wedding gift, if the couple had any tie to NYC or the arts. I would give it as a Christmas gift to friends or family, especially my mom or stepmom or an uncle (I am in my mid-30s). I own a copy, and already bought another copy just to have... whenever I find the right person to give it to. :)4. Your kids will probably fight over who gets to keep this book, when it gets passed down. It isn't a quick read, since there is so much to see... more the less, read... so you could even do a page a night with the kids at bedtime and it would take upwards of 2 weeks to get through it. Font is kinda small at times... so bring your glasses.Hope I am not ruining this by setting your expectations too high... but honestly... I think the book will meet any expectation you have in your head, within reason of course... !!Enjoy!I'll try to remember to take some pictures of my book so you can see some of the loose items, etc.** I have done reviews for the other books that I consider even better than this one **

Disappointing in content and complexity.

A couple of the pop ups were broken. I didn't expect that. I'm still glad that I have it though and will try to repair it.

Wasn't exactly what i thought it would be, but I'm happy with it. It arrived quickly.

I loved the pop up book of New York, It has a lot of information I can use for the 2011 VBS.

A wonderful carnival of a book, and like many carnivals it has problems if you look closely. The pop-ups aren't always easy to work, and one piece tends to get fouled up on another. In addition, there are a LOT of little booklets and enclosures- many of them great in themselves but they tend to fall out of the book into your lap. Then you've got an evening of "Where the #@&&%^! did THIS go?" ahead of you. Still, it's a love poem to NYC, with all the best intentions.

This is a fabulous paper construction that astounds me each time I open it. In addition to popups of the Brooklyn Bridge and other landmarks, the pages overflow with tiny newspapers, letters and magazines you can pull out and read. I grew up in the city, so it's even more fun to see it in paper. (My favorite? I think the Hirschfeld popup of the original cast of "Guys & Dolls.") A lot of fun, and one for which clean, dry hands are a must! Oh--the text aint bad either.

As a history of New York, this book is a wonder of facts and opinions from some of the city's greatest writers and observers.However, as a pop-up book, this pales in comparison to The Architecture Pack (whose design this book clearly is copying) or the work of pop-up genius Robert Sabuda. The most complex model in the book is The Empire State building which telescopes out of the book in three sections - unfortunately in my copy, the center section is permanently stuck (and won't extend) so the effect is completely lost. And the model of Grand Central requires serious "help" to pop-up, which, to me, defeats the object.A disappointment

Dale Brandt is an expert pool player, having competed professionally on the pool tournament circuit and has written columns for notable pool magazines. Brandt discusses both the mechanics and the mental aspect of pool, introducing the reader to key concepts like "3rd ball consciousness" (a method of visualizing where the balls end up after the shot), muscle memory and kata, a Japanese concept that stresses motion and thought. Offering a little physics along with psychology and geometry, Brandt differentiates between aiming and visualizing the shot, and he cautions players to "avoid boisterous or boastful activity" (smack-talk) or retaining rituals and rewards that players often use after losing a game or match.This book also offers readers a rich treasure of life advice and philosophy. Key to improving one's pool play and one's life is Brandt's concept of pool (and life) as a martial way. That is, both should be approached with mental discipline and honest examinations of one's strengths and weaknesses. Noting that a player's (and person's) inner journey is at least as important as the physical aspect of pool (and life), Brandt suggests a philosophy of combining both, using some eastern meditation or mysticism, a little Walt Whitman, some methods of a motivational speaker, and a bit of Carl Jung's theory of the unconscious. The advice in this book applies to many other fields of life other than pool--I've applied it to such diverse activities as fantasy football and policy debate.I absolutely recommend this book and give it five stars. If you read it, you will improve your pool game, and if you take it to heart you will also improve your approach to life. In fact, this book is so good and helpful, one should read it twice.

The subtitle "In Pursuit of Excellence" was well-chosen for this book. The writer's engaging style pulled me in and any reader should be able to identify flaws in approach, thinking, mindset and habit that can hold one back or propel one forward in the game of pool as well as the pursuit of an enhanced life. I am a person who loves fried foods. Well after speaking to her on the Phone I went looking for an Air Fryer the recipe booklet that comes with it isn't that large and I can't tell you how many meals I've cooked in it this is a great companion to the appliance and the recipes are basic and simple a must for every Air Fryer owner. Helps book for me, with air fryer.

I haven't read all the way through it yet & I may not. Most of what I've seen so far are so basic that anyone who's cooked before can already make without buying a book.All I have to say is it's a very good thing I didn't spend very much money on this thing or if really be ticked!I was far less than impressed

I have found a variety of recipes including sweet, savory, salty, citrusy, and other delicious recipes. I use them all for the Air Fryer, this one here I was looking for all the Healthy Meals, they were there. Very much appreciated and recommended.

It's hard to say whether this book has twists because having grown up loving the film based on book 1 of the Vampire Hunter series, I knew basically what was going to happen. The book had more information than the movie, which helped answer some questions I had, so that's good. I feel like the Vampire Hunter series, long as it is, is more of a slow-burn experience. The story is good, but sometimes the writing/translation is a bit awkward, especially when it comes to metaphors and descriptions - I don't know whether that's because of clumsy translation, or if it's a perfectly accurate translation of clumsy writing in the original, or if (because the original text is in Japanese), the translation is more technically faithful than it is faithful to the spirit of the story, turning poetic Japanese prose into a technically-correct but clumsy-on-the-tongue English version. If anyone has read this in the original Japanese and in translation, I'd love to know which is the case!TL;DR, this is a fun read but not a life-changing one. Try not to trip over clumsy sentences here and there.

4 star because I love the whole world of anime and manga.Okay, so I watched the old anime classic in 2017 for the first time and immediately fell in love with it. I bought both manga and the book immediately because I fell in love with the world and the characters. I love weird worlds, and D's world is some of the best out there - medieval coupled with super advanced technology in the very very far future where vampires exist as a sort of predominant race.I bought the book to learn more about the world and inner thoughts and motivations of the characters, because neither manga nor anime can't really show both of them completely. The book can achieve much much more in terms of descriptions, but unfortunately i wasn't prepared for such bad writing.The book is terribly written. I don't know if its the fault of translation, but the ongoing descriptions of the beauty of characters, the statement of actions and constant addressing of the reader really grated on my nerves by the end. I still love the world and the characters and the story. The anime is one of my favorite things ever and I am happily reading the manga. But for my own sanity I will stay away from the books.

I'm not a vampire novel fan, but I am a big fan of anime. Nope, I don't watch anime for the graphics, or the voice acting, I watch it for the different storylines and methods of approaching a story. Their stories are different to Western mainstream stories.This is why I love this novel, despite (let's face it!) the fact it's terribly written. I'm putting that down largely to quirks in translation.Firstly, the negatives:> While dialogue is serviceable, it's by no means outstanding (though I should note it's WAY better than the anime of the 80's).> You are constantly reminded of how gorgeous the characters are, and they are repeatedly described in detail (while characters who I guess are "ordinary" are described hardly at all).> The word "countenance". Seriously, count how many times it was used.> You are frequently given the result of an action, only to have the narrative backpedal to explain how such a result came about. I found this had a jarring effect on the flow of the story, until I started to get used to it by about half way through.> The omniscient narrator often addresses the reader directly (a personal dislike).> A bit of head-hopping, particularly in the beginning.> For folk who haven't seen the anime, I imagine there's a bunch of things that won't make sense until late in the novel.Now for the positives:> Characters were likable- a huge plus with me.> The enemies were so epically powerful that it was hard not to root for them, just to see them show off their stuff.> The story is very action-driven. There are no boring bits. Even the (few) lulls are filled with tension.> The story is set in a unique world in a distant post-apocalyptic future where there's a strong gothic/medieval influence (from the vampires and how they've shaped the world), but also very high-tech as far as cyborgs and weaponry goes. The creatures of myth and fairy tales are the result of vampiric influence and genetic modification.> Things continue to get worse for the main characters, and the flow of events weren't terribly predictable.> From someone who hasn't read (or enjoyed) very much vampire fiction, this was enjoyable and unique.For me, the pros outweighed the cons. The story moves at a fast pace and therefore you don't pay as much attention to the truly awful writing. I'll definitely be reading volume two. If the writing improves, I'll be a happy girl.

I read this after watching the 1985 animated classic movie, and I have to say that the movie sticks to the book very closely. If I hadn't known that the book was written first, I would have thought that it was the novelisation of the movie given how the writing style matches it. It really is like reading anime, given how many times people are described as attacking or defending in a fraction of a second, moving too fast for the eye to follow, or so fast that they leave after images behind. This does get irritating after a while, but the world is interesting enough, with just enough history explored to let you know why things are happening while still leaving enough unexplained to not bog things down.

As someone who was turned off by vampires as a mythology and subject matter, largely due to the over-saturation and terrible portrayals of the past decade or so, Vampire Hunter D is amazing enough to make me reconsider my stance on vampires. The story has plenty of action, tension, drama, and surprises to keep you reading and wanting more. The characters are colorful enough and also quite memorable. Kikuchi-san's writing style is a blend of some very pretty, flowery imagery and yet also very matter-of-fact statements at times, but he's good at bringing the story along. Most importantly, the novel is FUN to read! Yoshitaka Amano's illustrations work better in color, but I thought even his black and white drawings helped bring the story to life that much more.If you have any interest in fantasy, gothic, or vampires, definitely pick this up!

Well shoot. I bought this book only hours ago and now I'm ugly crying and laughing at the same time.I love books like this that suck you in and feel so real you forget it's not happening to you.I won't go too much into the plot but will say that the main character was faced with an impossible choice between not finding out the truth and keeping her son or investigating and losing him. It was written really well because most of the time, the mom didn't know herself what she would do. And she flip flopped a few times and doubted herself throughout. It felt authentic.The pace was just about perfect until the last couple chapters where it felt a bit rushed. I was completely shocked at the revelations contained in the violent battle but it worked. After that was resolved, I wasn't surprised at how the child custody was sorted out but I liked it.I didn't really love the last chapter which was one of those One Year Later things. It felt too ... Perfect. Considering how authentic the rest of the book was, it felt a bit fake.I'll definitely read this again!

I love Lisa. With the exception of a few books I've read all her work. This book was an easy read, I recommend it on a plane or a beach and only if you got it free. Major spoilers here, if one can spoil anything this bad. I hated the characters. The only character I felt for was Bill, Will/Timothys father/not father. The premise was great and in the hands of Lisa should have been awesome. Her problem was trying to put so many twists and turns on it she forgot to actually flesh out the characters. First Lisa is a lawyer. When I read a book like this from an author who is a lawyer I expect SOME things to not be so off the wall they are laughable. Sure, writers make crap up and write for entertainment but THIS BAD? Regardless of WHO the biological father is the law would recognize the man who was married to the woman at the time of birth. Having adopted a child who turned out to be kidnapped and given up for adoption illegally only to be exposed and whose mother conveniently died, whose (supposed) father conveniently died and whose mother had no other heirs except the man she listed as the father at the time of birth and was married to at the time of birth was too convenient. Guess what folks? THAT MAN holds all the cards. Main character? NO kid for YOU. And then the crime scene in the kitchen where there's blood everywhere. They ripped up the floor and painted over the blood stained walls with pretty green paint. Um yea, not. heads up people, if that happens call in the professionals to clean it up. SS And the kid really? Smartest kid out there. At 3. Lisa, you keep spewing out crap like that and I'm done. Are you a paranormal romance writer with your sappy ending or a thriller write? And I LOVE paranormal so no comments folks. I ca't even go on. It's bad. Save your money.

This is the sixth book of Scottoline's I've read and I still haven't learned my lesson. Her books start out so interesting ... It's so easy to put yourself in the character's place. But the endings are always disappointing. Once again, the antagonist ends up explaining why he did what he did to the victim---- so unrealistic. This is my last book by this author.

This is another hit from Ms. Scottoline. Her books and story lines rival Grisham and Pattersons'. I’ve tried to get my friends into reading her books, but for some reason, they feel there is no one better than Patterson. I agree his story lines and plots are great, but as noted earlier, she is surely in there class of writers with her storylines and plots, maybe fresher, better? You have to give her a try.

Tedious, predictable, poorly written and lacking editorial skills. No, I did not like it ! Obviously written quickly to turn a kindle profit dollar, guess it did, sigh. The heroine was no role model for working mothers. She totally ignores both her child and her job, not considering either as she plows through a self motivated journey into the ridiculous ~The first third of the "book" almost made me give up, but, I had paid Amazon and thought I should stick it out, waste of time and expectation. I should have stopped and read the oh so predictable last couple pages, everyone, friends & foes, except the oh so silly dead ones, lived happily blah blah blah

After book club last night, consensus was that this book is too full of contrived plot twists, unbelievable circumstances and tired cliches. Scottoline usually does much better than this. Yes, it's fiction, but it was almost tedious.From the first mention of the "lop-sided grin" of the boyfriend-bad guy, you HAD to know where THAT was going. Scottoline does describe some of the choices/emotions/conflicts that a single mom experiences, but even that seems like she is quoting something she read in a self-help column. The handsome Latin boss, the always-good-natured caregiver, the bad bad boyfriend, the shallow co-worker... all cliches.Book club wasn't sure whether some of the contrived circumstances were a feeble attempt to elicit an emotional response or whether just a bad plot turn. E.g., was the fact that Sarah's husband is found to have MS and in a wheelchair supposed to make the reader more compassionate about her selfish actions? If so, there should have been more than 2 sentences and one earlier reference to him.Scottoline seems to throw all kinds of plot twists and turns and contrived cricumstances up against the way, just to see what sticks. Dead Mom, Dad remarrying, Trust find intact, Amy is found then permanently lost, stalking for DNA, layoffs at work, etc. Yuk.Skip this one & go back to some of Scottoline's older works to see what's up with Bennie. It will be far more entertaining. Boy, this is one Kindle edition I wish I could take to Half-Price Books or donate.

I have several past editions of this guide and find it invaluable for identifying lures. I have identified unknown lures for Russ Lewis for his 6 book series and in the 6th edition of this guide identified an unknown lure... the Ping-a-tee...while it was still in production!!I don't rely on any of these guides for actual but only relative pricing value since condition is a very critical factor in the value of all fishing tackle. This guide along with the 6 volume set by Russell Lewis of more modern fishing tackle really covers anything you will probably find in any tackle box !

I already owned the sixth edition of this book, but purchased the eight edition in hopes that more information would be presented on some of the more obscure lure manufacturers. In some instances, this is the case, however, it seems that the author abbreviated much of the information on the more popular manufacturers in order to save space for the new companies added to the eighth edition. In many cases, I find myself still relying heavily on the older edition. Using both books seems to be the best solution.

This 670-page book contains much more than just descriptions of lures. I got the 5th Edition(1999) which serves me, a novice, very well. It contains lure descriptions, tips on collecting,and an expansive list of lures. I'm certain it will be a valuable reference as I move forward. The cost was a small fraction of the latest edition. I've already found information on a couple of lures that folks on Ebay had listed as "manufacturer unknown.

my husband received an old tackle box full of lures from a friend who just did not want it any more. we knew there were some from the early 20's to 40's,other than that we knew nothing about them. we found several books we thought might help us. we had a tough time deciding between this one and several others on amazon. at the last min we decided to get this one and are we glad. has wonderful history, easy to use index. it is a wealth of information. we have identified dozens of tackle. this book is HIGHLY recommended if you have alot of old lures.

A great book--an unbelievable amount of pictures and information. You'd have to search the internet for hours, maybe days, to find the pictures and descriptions contained here. Very impressive.

Loved the TV show so we got the cookbook. Only tried a few recipes so far, but they've been good.

I love how the recipes are basic and traditional with easy-to-find ingredients. I've only made three recipes, and was surprised at the outcome. The jambalaya was outstanding and may replace the go-to recipe I've used for almost 25 years. But the King Cake recipe was a disaster (and I've been making King Cakes from scratch for two decades), and the Shrimp Creole is SO salty my family and I couldn't eat it. It calls for two teaspoons of salt PLUS 5 tablespoons of Creole seasoning (I use Tony's). I should've followed my gut instinct and held back on the salt, but I didn't, and now I've wasted $25 worth of shrimp plus all of the other ingredients. I would like to know if anyone else had this experience with this recipe!UPDATE: I've since made two more recipes: maque choux and the stuffed green bell peppers. Both were good, but a couple of things....maque choux traditionally has bacon in it, but this recipe doesn't call for bacon. However, I swear I see bacon in the photograph of the dish! The stuffed green peppers were a hit with my family, but there is a mistake in the recipe. It calls for 8 ounces of tomato sauce. At one point in the recipe, it says, "Add tomatoes, tomato sauce, and garlic." As any cook knows, this means to use all the tomato sauce because it doesn't specify otherwise. However, at the end, it says, "Pour remaining tomato sauce over peppers." What remaining tomato sauce?UPDATE 2: Last night I made the Redfish Sauce Piquante, and I found another discrepancy between the recipe and its photo. The picture shows a beautifully seasoned piece of fish, but the recipe calls for browning the fish with no seasoning. I followed the recipe and not the photo, and I believe that was a mistake. My whole family commented how the fish lacked flavor. If I make this again, I will season the fish before browning it. The sauce itself was pretty good, although I'm used to a Redfish Courtbouillon, which has a roux and I think the sauce would've benefited from a roux, both in terms of flavor and consistency. I also recommend cutting down on the Cajun seasoning, as the recipes in this book run on the salty side.

It's very well written and the type set is big enough to see without me having to squelch my eyes. The photos are colorful and the recipes are easy to follow. I.made gumbo which turned out very good. The book.is well made with a binding that can be wiped off easily if you spill on it

I have become a huge fan of his cooking show, and was excited to learn about this cookbook that correlates with the series. His no nonsense, humorous approach to cooking sealed the deal for me. I am inspired to cook something from it almost every time I watch him prepare a dish. Everything I have cooked thus far has turned out wonderfully--my favorite being the New Orleans Shrimp Etouffee. I have had to TWEAK a few dishes, but being a seasoned cook, that presents no problem for me. Each recipe has tips and beautiful color photos of the finished dish. He offers a bit of regional, as well as his family history at the beginning of each recipe. If you are looking for a specific ingredient that you do not have or cannot find, there are resources listed in the back of the book. Overall, this is a well written, easy to follow, entertaining cookbook and I highly recommend it!

I love this cookbook. He has a cooking show on PBS which I watch every Sat and all the recipes are in this book. Love Kevin Belton.

There are categories of loving this book... size/dimensions, perfect ... open format showing 1 recipe on both facing pages... the larger size of the text.. education of the region & recipe but not a long commentary... great photography.. even love the embossing on the cover. Kevin's soul comes thru in each recipe & yet they are simple, uncomplicated but straight from a Cajun granny's heart. WELL DONE!

Like many others, I first discovered Chef Kevin on Create TV. I bought this book because I enjoy his show and wanted to make some of the recipes. I have made several of the recipes and they all turned put very well.. Granted, there are a few recipes I can't make, such as the turtle soup and anything calling for crawfish, because I'm in New Hampshire and we really can't get those ingredients up here. But that does not take away from the value of the book, as most of the recipes call for ingredients that we can get anywhere. I know you can probably sub shrimp for crawfish, just not sure what to sub for turtle meat. But if I ever see it in a store here, I might buy it just to try that soup. It did look good on TV.

We live in New Orleans, and this is the essential Creole cookbook that the locals use. Kevin Belton is a great personality as well - catch him on your local PBS if you can. This is the third time we have purchased this book as each time we have out of town guests, they go nuts over the food we serve, so we send them home with our copy of this book, a jar of creole seasoning, and a bottle of Crystal hot sauce. The recipes are very doable for an intermediate cook, and the ingredient list is brief and available at most US grocery stores (although I bet our shrimp is better than yours :). The most difficult part is learning to make a proper roux although Youtube will serve as a good tutor. Remember, Creole food is not hot spicy, just complex, rich, and flavorful.

Purchased as a gift for my mother who is no slouch in the kitchen. She says it is well worth every penny.
