This is a very engaging story of an actual possible event in our lifetime with much to tell that we need to know. Very creatively written that keeps one engaged throughout...with anticipation for the next volumes.I highly RESENT the needing to buy successive volumes in order to follow the plot to an ending. None of these "series of volumes" are complete in themselves, making them a scam I have fallen prey to simply because I was seeking insights & tips books on potential end-times catastrophes. I am full of the info I was seeking and, thankfully, I can walk away from this new rip-off & return to the library where I only need a library card and not $49. to read what should be one book with a finish.

The Yellowstone caldera is one of the biggest threats to mankind. One that could erupt at any time and put the survival of every living creature at risk of extinction. But the eruption of the massive volcano is not the only thing that is a threat to Jake and Ashby as they make their way to California and hopefully the safety of Mad House owned by Jake’s parents and then on to Saratoga. No, the ugly side of man has started to show. Those who haven’t prepared for an emergency are getting hungry and are looking for supplies and then there are those who are just out for themselves and just want to take what isn’t theirs. The action starts and never lets up in this, the third book in the series. The excitement of following along with Jake and Ashby is breath holding worthy and heart stopping at times as they fight for their lives against the degenerates that will stop at nothing to gain what they want. No place seems safe now and finding a safe haven seems like a dream but the two of them keep on going to where they hope to finally find security. Will they finally be able to let down their guard when they reach Fruitvale West, a gated community where Jake’s parents had lived, or will it have to be just another stopping ground for them? Time will tell but by the looks of things there, not is all as it seems…I absolutely loved this addition to the series and how Bobby Akart portrays everything so realistically. This is not just an entertaining story, it shows us what we need to do and look out when the shtf and hopefully be able to survive another day. Thank you Bobby for such an exciting series that has kept me up long hours into the night until I turned that last page! I am so looking forward to the final book and then to the next adventure you take us all on!

The story goes on from the first volume, but the most horrifying stuff is the information about things that would quickly be affected. Evacuations on a mass level would be necessary...what do you do with the many prisons and their inmates? In this book, lesser offenders and those awaiting trial are quickly sent out the door, but even then it's the effect of turning hungry wolves loose in a flock of sheep. These people have nothing to lose and no reason to put on even a facade of being good citizens. They can prey freely on others who are unprepared or oblivious to the dangers. What happens to law enforcement, fire, operators of utility services, the people who make decisions? A lot of them go home and look after their own families. Utilities close down to protect their equipment. Trucks stop running. Fuel, food, medical supplies, everything needed for everyday living, none of it gets where it needs to go. Refugee traffic blocks the highways, soon brought to a halt as cars run out of fuel.People who work in emergency preparedness should read this, not necessarily for the dramatic storyline, but as a reminder of the breadth and scope of problems related to a major incident, whether it's Yellowstone, Cascadia, a nuclear attack, zombies, whatever. Preppers will also find some good ideas in this book. The scariest thing is that your fellow humans are likely to be the most dangerous thing out there.

Jake Wheeler and Ashby Donovan had grown close in their frantic flight ahead of the wrath of Yellowstone's eruption. Pursued by storms of volcanic ash, clouds of poisonous gases and the worst detritus of humanity, they had made their way to Jake's family cabin on the Mad River in northern California. The 'cabin' was fully stocked and provisioned and would support them until they could grow their own provisions. All they needed now was an erupting volcano to quit erupting and quit pumping tons of ash into the atmosphere.Furious flight from certain death leaves little opportunity to become acquainted, let alone forming attachments, but if our characters can manage it, I reckon we can too. Very easily managed actually, the characters are close friends and family. Like people we've known all our lives, Jake and Ashby are everything we wish we were. The storyline explodes through the pages like a super volcano, and the action is quick and dynamic. This series has given me several sleepless nights, with action keeping me glued to the pages until I arrived at the final cliffhanger!I can heartily recommend this book and this series! Realistic action and believable dialogue keep your attention riveted. This series is a must read!

I didn't need to read the whole thing. After reading 20 pages, I was able to get my files transferred and get the new Mac up and running. The transition was much easier than I thought, and I am really glad to have the rest of the book as a reference to answer my questions as they come up.I have been using Windows PC's for 30 years. My wife "upgraded" to a Windows 8 machine. I have spent days trying to work with it. We have a neighbor who is a Microsoft engineer who helped develop Windows 8. He spent an entire afternoon trying to teach us the new system. Switching to the Mac was easier than switching to Windows 8 for this dedicated previous Microsoft user.

Software and computer companies no longer give you any information except for setup anymore in their packaging. One can download manuals on your devices (tablets, phones, etc.), but I am a person that likes to highlight sections and instructions to refer back to later as there is much to learn when obtaining a new gadget. I do not just want to learn what is necessary to do only basic functions and always want to acquire an in-depth book to get to the meat of the gadget. This manual is set up in an easy way to explore some of these things. I used to use Que Publishing books, but they seem to have disappeared and this is a good substitute for those manuals. I purchased "Office 2011 for Macintosh" missing manual book also and love them both. Highly recommend.

New Mac user after 30 years as a PC user. Great book to explain differences and similarities.

I found this book very helpful in my research on moving from a PC to an iMac. It answered many questions about how some of the Apple installed software works, and prepared me for the switch. After I bought an iMac it has been helpful in answering my questions on how to perform a particular task, or why something happened in a way I do not understand. The one downside is that Pogue does not explain much beyond the dialog box, i.e. why only certain options are available. Overall I like the book. It has made the transitionto the iMac much easier.

I’m never going to read “Switching to the Mac” from cover to cover like I do most books. There’s too much here to absorb. I don’t want my brain as stuffed as my hard drive so I’ll use it as a reference book. Is it a good reference book? Based on what I’ve actually used, I’d say it’s an excellent reference book. This review will probably focus more on David Pogue than on his book because it’s his background and knowledge that will signal the worth of his information. His credentials are impressive. He is the author of 120 titles in the Missing Manual series and seven books for the Dummies series. He reportedly has over 3 million books in print. In addition to his work on computer knowledge he has also written about magic, digital photography, opera, and classical music. As a sort of compendium of his knowledge, he has also authored a manual, “National Geographic’s The Science of Everything.” He obviously has some chops. He’s not a one-trick pony. He was also a technology columnist for “The New York Times” for 13 years. He is a monthly columnist for Scientific American and host of science shows on NOVA. He’s been a correspondent “CBS Sunday Morning since 2002. His latest venture is Yahoo Tech, a consumer-technology Web site where he promises that everything he publishes will be “funny, authoritative, and helpful.” I’ve looked at the site (it’s massive) but haven’t had the time to really study it because of looking through the equally massive “Switching to the Mac.”So I’m going out on a limb here. I’m going to use Pogue’s impressive background to evaluate what I’ve already read in the book and seen in other reviews to 5-star rate the book without equivocation. My Apple tech rep is great but Apple’s user information is too spread out for easy reference. Switching to a Mac? Get this book.Schuyler T WallaceAuthor of TIN LIZARD TALES

I bought this manual when I purchased a Macbook Pro. Although the guide includes a lot of useful info, I learned (after many years of using a PC) to use the Mac via trial and error (as opposed to reading through the guide). I have kept the guide as reference in the event I need to look up something out of the ordinary.

Windows PC user for years using this manual has allowed me to transition to a new IMAC and quickly cross reference the information with a hardcopy of IMAC for Dummies series. Found out areas that were not addressed in other manuals. Worth the purchase but make sure you get the one for your specific OS.

I'm pretty good at teaching myself new things but this was a life saver for a Mac novice during crunch time, esp for under $20.

All I wanted was a simple workbook so my 9-year-old daughter could practice her cursive handwriting. Happily, this workbook fit the bill!I actually read through quite a few reviews of other workbooks before making this purchase, and I'm glad I did. Mostly, people had very specific complaints about other workbooks, and I'm happy to confirm that those concerns do not apply here. This book is a full-sized 8.5" x 11" workbook. It is not miniature-sized in any way.Sample letters - capital and lowercase - do have arrows to show the direction in which to write each letter. The tail of the arrow indicates the starting point. There is only one arrow for each pen stroke, so the person learning to write cursive does need to understand the concept of re-tracing lines, as required when writing, say, capital N and capital M. If a letter requires more than one pen stroke - like capital K - there is an arrow for each separate stroke, plus a small number that indicates the stroke order.Pages are perforated, so they can be cleanly torn out and used as worksheets. The bulk of the book consists of one practice page per letter. Each page includes the letter written in upper and lowercase cursive, a funny little picture of something starting with that letter, and two sample words describing the picture. So, for example, the N page shows a picture of a necktie, and the words "nifty necktie" are written in cursive beside it. There are guidelines for practicing - solid lines along the top and bottom of each capital letter, and dashed lines in the middle to show the height of lowercase letters. Each page has 8 practice lines, including 6 traceable capital letters (pre-printed in light grey), and 6 traceable lowercase letters.Additional pages focus on some specific aspect of cursive writing. For example:- Curves- Ascending letters (lowercase letters that are as tall as capital letters)- Descending letters (lowercase letters that go below the bottom-most guideline)- Frequently seen consonant combinations and a sample word - with picture - of each (like br for brush, sp for spoon, etc.)- Frequently seen vowel combinations and a sample word - with picture - of each (like oo for book, ou for house, etc.)- All the months of the yearThe workbook has 48 numbered pages, but taking out the title page, table of contents, and introduction, there are 44 sheets to practice on - that is, there are 22 "pages", front and back. The only thing that stood out to me is that the lowercase t is written at full-height, like lowercase l. I have a clear childhood memory of learning that the lowercase t should be slightly shorter than the lowercase l. I don't know if standards have changed, or if it's just a different style, or what, but I guess it doesn't really matter! The bottom line is, this is a great workbook. Plenty of space to practice, plus fun little pictures to go along with sample words.

With the help of this and one other work book, my then 11-year granddaughter was able to learn and practice cursive writing over her summers with her Grammy and me, Granddaddy. It features easy-to-learn examples and exercises and she did most of the work. Her school doesn't teach it, yet much of our history and letters are written in cursive, and nothing is more elegant than cursive compared to block printing. My granddaughter is really proud she worked hard to acquire this life-long skill. Best testimonial? I received this note from her in November:"Dear Granddaddy,Thank you for teaching me cursive,. I have been writing everything in cursive in school and have gotten multiple compliments on this form of writing. I think cursive makes me look a lot smarter.Love, Jessie" Of course, her note was written in...cursive.(I have to watch out for those onion-cutting Ninjas when I read her sweet notes)

Not too impressed. When I learned cursive, I distinctly remembered more swoops and curls and loops... the P and R and C in this just looks like you slapped the printed letter a little sideways and all it would need was a V8 to straighten back up. So it's ok for what it is. Just not what I expected. Really not worth my $6. Maybe half that and we'll call it good.

It's a book teaching cursive writing. It does that. I wanted something that wasn't geared toward younger kids and this was it. I discovered that my grandkids who are in jr high and starting high school couldn't write and I was furious. I ordered this and it seems to do the job.

Ordered this to help an 11 yr old learn cursive because the schools didn't require it when he was in the 3rd grade. NOW that he is in the 5th, we have to practice. This book provides exactly what we needed. I am not disappointed.

I got this book for my grandson who is twelve years old and doesn't know how to read cursive. His teachers do not teach it. "It is no longer needed." I don't believe that at all! Good book.

I am convinced of the value in learning cursive writing which is no longer taught in many schools. I bought this for my 13 year-old son and it has been wonderful. He hasn't been bored wihch was important so that he would willingly do these excercies and his writing is improving immensely. Highly recommend!

Review

"Mr. Parker tells [the story] with verve. . . . [his] novel interpretation, emphasizing climate instead of individual agency, helps to explain socio-economic change and revolution in ways that future historians will inevitably have to take into account."—Wall Street Journal"The author sets out to examine a century in which weather patterns radically altered and political, social and economic crises seemed to engulf every part of the world. What relationship does a changing climate bear to global stability? There could scarcely be a more timely question to ask. Parker deploys a dazzling breadth of scholarship in answering it."—Dan Jones, Times"In his monumental new book . . . Parker’s approach is systematic and painstaking . . . giv[ing] us a rich and emotionally intense sense of how it felt to live through chaotic times."—Lisa Jardine, Financial Times"Global Crisis is a magnum opus that will remain a touchstone in three areas for at least a generation: the history of the entire globe, the role of climate in history, and the identification of a major historical crisis in the seventeenth century. . . . Wide-ranging, monumental works of history are rare; this is one of them."—Theodore K. Rabb, Times Literary Supplement"In this vast, superbly researched and utterly engrossing book, Parker shows how climate change pushed the world towards chaos. . . . Parker’s book is not merely powerful and convincing, it is a monument to scholarly dedication."—Dominic Sandbrook, Sunday Times"[A] milestone in our understanding of early modern history."—Theodore K. Rabb, Times Literary Supplement"[A] staggeringly researched, rivetingly written and intellectually dazzling book. . . . I expect it to be read and debated for decades to come."—Sunday Times"A work of formidable erudition and scope from a renowned British authority on early modern history."—Financial Times"My big book of the year has been Geoffrey Parker’s Global Crisis on the disastrous war-torn 17th century. It fills in gaps, gives different perspectives—not least on Scotland during the Civil War—and opens new areas of history to explore."—Catriona Graham, The Guardian"One of the books I found most informative and most perversely enjoyable this year is Geoffrey Parker’s Global Crisis:  War, Climate Change and Catastrophe in the Seventeenth Century. It deserves, and rewards, careful reading."—Jane Smiley, Harper’s"The clarity with which Parker, a British historian, has assembled a wealth of material makes this long book difficult to put down. The entire world of the 1660s seems only a heartbeat away."—Patricia Anderson, Australian"A must read that shows how climate change 350 years ago can serve as a harbinger of the possible human consequences of today's rapidly changing climate. Essential. All levels/libraries."—Choice"[A] brilliant and mulifaceted approach to the global 17th century."—Robert E. Scully, S.J., America Magazine"Parker’s book captures this century of upheaval in a political, economic, and cultural history of dozens of early modern states. Parker combed archives in six European countries, as well as India."—Debroah R. Coen, Foreign Affairs "This is a colossal book, literally and metaphorically. Reading it reminded me of the exhilaration of first reading Braudel’s Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World in the Age of Philip II. Parker’s book has the same combination of rich detail, global reach and a simple but powerful argument that can change how we see an entire period. Like Braudel’s, Parker’s writing is deft, vivid and rich enough to carry the reader along on the book’s grand tour of the chilly, conflict-ridden world of the 'General Crisis.'"—David Christian, Journal of Military HistorySunday Times History Book of the Year 2013Selected as a Choice Outstanding Academic Title for 2013 in the History, Geography, & Area Studies CategoryReceived an Honorable Mention for the 2013 American Publishers Awards for Professional and Scholarly Excellence (PROSE), in the European & World History categoryWinner of the Society for Military History 2014 Distinguished Book Award for the best book-length publication in English on non-United States military historyWinner of a 2014 British Academy Medal"Geoffrey Parker's Global Crisis is at once a revelation and a provocation. By examining a period of unusual climatic perturbation Parker helps us better understand our own era of climate change. Few indeed are the works of history that are so urgently relevant to the present and the future."—Amitav Ghosh, author of The Great Derangement"Geoffrey Parker has deployed the human archive for climate change during the seventeenth century in a masterly synthesis of history and paleoclimatology that helps us redefine the impact of the Little Ice Age on humanity. The Global Crisis is a beautifully written, masterly work of multidisciplinary history, which draws on an amazing range of sources. Parker’s work opens up exciting new avenues for historical inquiry and has direct relevance to today’s debates over climate change and humanity."—Brian Fagan, Emeritus Professor of Anthropology, University of California, Santa Barbara, and author of The Little Ice Age"Geoffrey Parker’s Global Crisis is an extraordinarily ambitious attempt to write world history "from the bottom up". Based on long decades of work, and eschewing the facile solution of just drawing on secondary literature, Parker once more shows his grasp of varied archives and texts for which he is celebrated. He draws them together around a complex yet powerful thesis linking climate, military power and political change in the seventeenth century. Learned and argumentative, yet written with subtlety, wit and panache, his book will set the bar for the next generation of students and scholars who want to write history on this scale."—Sanjay Subrahmanyam, University of California at Los Angeles"Parker has given us the most profound and global account of the pivotal seventeenth century, from its revolutions and rebellions to scientific and constitutional breakthroughs.  As we enter a new era of global climate change, this gripping book provides a wondrous portrait of a similar age and a stern warning."—Jack A. Goldstone, author of Why Europe? The Rise of the West in World History 1500-1850"A world-altering force [that] has been emerging, one larger, more devastating, and more definitive than the any other 'turn' in recent historiography: 'I speak of climate change—or climate collapse—and all of its related global transformations.'"—Julia Adeney Thomas, American Historical Review

After a couple of scattershot chapters it gets into a country by country history and does a major service to the historical discourse by adding in the food production and taxation effects as the events unfolded. It was also fascinating to look across cultures at the same time: the Chinese, Russian, Ottoman, and European, amongst others, to see that all faced severe weather related problems, but often reacted differently. Recommended for those who are interested in how human society survived and progressed in a particularly trying century.

This is a great work; it will stand as a major history of human beings dealing with multiple crises. I have to disagree with those who say it's "not for the beach" just because it's long. It is so well and compellingly written that it served me well on a long vacation. Infinitely better than those horrible long novels people take with them.My one problem is that Dr. Parker does not really prove a case that climate caused the revolutions and wars. He stops a bit short of saying it did. He correlates wars and rebellions with the horrible climate events of the Little Ice Age, but--in a particularly good section of the book--notes that the awful climate events continued well into the 18th century, but the wars didn't. In fact, the 18th century begat the Enlightenment, partly in reaction to all those wars in the 17th. So, in fact, climate problems sometimes go with wars and sometimes go with revolutions and sometimes with neither one. Not much hope of causal chains there. In some cases, the wars were predictable long before the climate turned bad. The Ming Dynasty's survival till 1644 was a still-unexplained miracle; it was rotten and tottering by 1550 (or even 1500) and would surely have fallen in the 17th century, climate or no. The religious wars of Europe were also a long time coming; they started in the 1200s with the Albigensian Crusade and got steadily more serious as Protestantism appeared. The climax in the 17th century was fairly predictable. So, how much does climate explain? It certainly made people more desperate. It certainly displaced millions, and displaced people have much less vested interest in peace than stably located ones. We will need a lot more studies.Of course, Parker is writing with an eye to our current period of rapid climatic change. I expect that we will see either lots of wars or lots of action to stop climate change. Possibly both. Dr. Parker provides a scary scenario of what might happen (again).

This great book by Geoffrey Parker was for me, as a Dutchman, a real eye opener. We were always taught at school that the 17th century was called Holland’s Golden Century (Gouden Eeuw). But halfway through this century the Dutch Provinces lost their global influence in trade and their society slit into relative poverty. All this happened rather quickly and has been incomprehensible for many. Parker, in a very captivating way, put this global era in a completely new perspective. He not only describes the effects sudden climate change had on society. Like failing crops, there for no food for the population, with the result that 30% of society just starved. The bottom third of the global population was pushed over the cliff. But also describes, in a very fascinating way, how governments and policy makers muddled through this period. Because of their total lack: of understanding, information and communication. Today we know more and understand more and we have constant actual information we can communicate instantly. I sincerely hope that today’s governments and policy-makers read this book, so we will do better with the eminent climate change we have on our doorstep today.

This is a must-read book for anyone interested in or who doubts the effects of climate change. There are some real eye-opening facts in this well-researched, highly readable historical book. The consequences of climate change are laid in in clear, easy to understand sections that cover the span of the globe and how different cultures struggled to deal with the wild swings in weather during the 17th Century. When a dearth of sunspots, coupled with an increase in volcanic activity combined to drop worldwide temperatures by 0.5 to 2 degrees Celsius. It may not seem like much but simple mathematics show the devastating effects even such apparently small changes can have on food production.

This is a huge and fascinating book about the great crisis of the 17th century. The author is perhaps the greatest living historian of 16th-17th century Iberia, and here he expands his scope to the entire world. He draws connections to the disruptive climate (weather) of the time, one of the temperature troughs in the multi-century Little Ice Age, which is valid, and he avoids overstating his case as most climate warriors seem to do. There are plenty of lessons for today, both climate-related and otherwise (like, tax revolts in France, very current as I write in January 2019). I note that as for climate, all the historical analyses I have seen, including this one, emphasize the bad effects of COOLING, not WARMING. To the extent we expect climate to change (and it is always doing something), we should expect there to be disruptions in human activity, pluses and minuses.

A massive book that is clearly written and ties The 30 Years War, Plagues, Revolutions around the world, and population crises and crash together. Not a Grand Theory book so much as it is an impressive mining of many sources of data to explain how and why the Western World changed so radically and the Enlightenment and technological developments exploded in the 18th Century.
