With over 100 contributors, including pastors and theologians of different denominations, this is one of the most comprehensive books on preaching there is. The down side is, each contributor pretty much writes 1-10 pages of materials, so many discuss the same thing, and some even contradict each other. However, the book is called Art and Craft, and as such, everyone is entitled to their own opinion on what is effective. It is up to the reader to decide what they should incorporate. I actually really appreciate this approach - instead of telling me that things should be done in this way, it presented me with several options, and let me decide what best suited me

I'm getting my Doctor of Ministry degree in preaching, and so I've read lots of books about giving sermons through the years. This is one of the best. Dozens of scholars have written articles divided up into different categories (style, delivery, preparation, application, illustration, introductions, conclusions). Timothy Warren has several articles defending the topical expository sermon. He is strongly committed to expository preaching, but he doesn't necessarily feel that this always has to be from just one passage per Sunday.Haddon Robinson has a convicting article warning about plagiarism, and he also has a great article about planning your sermons ahead of time.Rick Warren has a good article about purpose driven titles for your sermons. The title should clearly communicate what the message is about without giving too much away.John Ortberg discusses the use of illustrations, and there are also articles about outlining and discovering the main point of the scripture passage you are preaching on (frequently referred to as "The Big Idea").Don Sunukjian has some contributions to the book, and one article warns about using too much alliteration, which is often the result of the preacher forcing his outline on the text.You could read this book straight through, or you could pick out the articles that interest you at that moment in time. Many of these articles were first made available only to those who had an online membership to a certain website. But now these sterling pieces have been compiled into this thick volume. The book also comes with an mp3 cd. Highly recommended.

Robinson and Larson are amazing in this textbook. When my pastor found out that I neede it for college he said, "Bruce, I taught hermeneutics for five years its the best out there.

Again, this a lengthy book but the chapters are bite sized and vary based on a variety of contributors. I highly recommend it.

I love this book. I bought for my class but plan to read it for yours to come. I bought both the hard copy and Kindle version. Good resources to read now and later. Chapters are independent from each other and can be read randomly.

About the Author

Crested Butte was a great place to be in 1963 ... but there was no school to attend, so at the end of the ski season the Beidleman family moved to the big city of Aspen. Neal grew up skiing every day after school and ski raced through high school. His summers were filled with climbing the mountains and crags of the valley along with lots of lawn mowing, newspaper delivery, and construction. As a student at CU-Boulder, he continued ski racing at the University and then coached for two years. Somehow, Neal obtained a degree in mechanical engineering and began working in the aerospace industry. He talked several prominent aerospace companies into hiring him, so he worked on rockets and designed satellites. Between 92 and 00, the big mountains of the Himalaya called. In between jobs he climbed on the likes of Annapurna, K2, Cho Oyu and summitted Makalu and Everest as a guide. In 94 he had had enough of Boulder and moved back to Aspen fulltime to start an engineering design and consulting business, IDEA Inc. He and Amy Gilbertson were married later that year. When not working, he keeps himself busy rock climbing up Independence Pass, where he has established about 150 new routes. Neal has skied from the summits of all of the Elk Range 14ers and once ran all of them in a single, continuous 70 mile push. In the winters, he can be found out skiing on the mountains around Aspen as much as he can get away with. Neal s biggest joy, however, is being alongside Amy watching their two kids, Nina (9) and Reed (6), grow up and figure out the world for themselves.

I am totally impressed by this book.There is incredibly detailed photography showing the best of Aspen/Highlands/Buttermilk/Snowmass.I used this book extensively navigating areas that are tricky:Highlands BowlTemerityCirqueHanging ValleyThe DumpsEven for intermediates - there is a list of runs that are consistently groomed at some point during a typical week. Let's you keep a watch out for when Campground, Slot, Tiehack, etc. are smoothed out.I have similar books for Vail, Whistler, Alta, Jackson ... and this one is the best done for any North American ski resort.

My wife and I have skied at Aspen for years and already knew our way around Ajax, Highlands, and Snowmass. But Neal's book has shown us some trails that we'd missed. It's a convenient size to carry and he adds some good local's stories.

I've been to Aspen several times for skiing and, like most visitors, have to rely on the trail map for navigation unless I take a lesson and have the benefit of a professional to take me to the best spots for my ability. It's summer now as I write and it's so hot that the flies are on strike but this book already has me thinking about winter because it brings the trail map to life: in place of a green, red, blue, or yellow line on a piece a paper, I know a bit more about the run, its true challenge, and often the story behind the mysterious name. Why are the Dumps on Aspen Mountain called the Dumps? What does AMF, a run at The Cirque at Snowmass, really stand for? Get the book and you'll find out.While the book is perhaps targeted at the more serious skier, there's plenty for the intermediate as Beidleman describes every run on every mountain (I think) including places where the way-hones wouldn't normally visit, like Buttermilk. The book includes 150 runs that aren't on the trail map...which is nice.I also like the more accurate rating system than one would find on a trail map. Most resorts fib a little when it comes to blue, green, black, but Beidleman's system, along with frequent cautionary sentences, provides a true sense of the challenge, risks, and dangers. A run might be listed as double black diamond extreme but is it? Is there a run you'd like to try that's more difficult and potentially dangerous than indicated? Is there a way down the Back of Bell that's not as tough as the trail map indicates? Is a run bumped out or steep or both? You'll find out in the book.It's a pocket size book, as it should be, and the price may seem a touch steep, but most of the book is in four color and the photos are extremely valuable and much more illustrative than a typical trail map; and to me, a trail map is a superb example of top-quality commercial illustration.If you're an advanced, expert, or advanced intermediate skier, then the book is a must as you'll really get a sense of where you'll find the most fun for your level on the mountain, thus maximizing the efficacy of your VST. If you're a cruiser, then the book will make you want to get better and, at the very least, just get you fired up about getting to the mountain(s). I'm really looking forward to spending some time with this small but powerful tome and it's going to enhance my enjoyment of a place I already really love.

A really nice book and contrary to what another reviewer stated, there are lovely pictures, just not many of them. I've enjoyed just reading through for inspiration, but I've noticed that some of the recipes weren't edited or probably weren't tested at all (ie. some of the proportions in the pasta section are highly questionable (a cup of oil to fry some shallots?! Wow, that is a waste of good oil.) -- hence the four stars instead of five. Now to start cooking so I can really judge the recipes...fun!

I purchased this because of an other Ad by Saveur for a subscription and purchased from Amazon for convenience. It's not as much of a basic cookbook going over cooking techniques and core recipes, but a very well organized group of recipes probably published over time by the magazine. The recipes are global, but mainly from the USA but are contemporary and surprisingly simple and accessible. Although not exact, there is a technical similarity to other contemporary recipes of the same dish.

Smart, helpful, and every recipe so well-written. I like the way the book is organized into 15 chapters, including ones for drinks and pantry. Historical and/or regional background accompany many recipes along with techniques and tips. You can sit for hours perusing this amazing book. It would be great to have more pictures but the book is already over 600 pages so it's easy to see why photos are limited, but it would be nice if each chapter had corresponding photos grouped at the end instead of mixing them in different places throughout the book.

This was recommended to me by a friend of mine and this is a really terrific and fabulous book, the recipes are just outstanding, it’s beautifully made and bound, this would be a treasure to have and a wonderful addition to any cook book library

Beautiful book, and well laid out. I originally got this from the library and was so impressed I wanted a copy for myself. Glancing through the recipes, you can see that they will work, easy to follow without being overly complex. Saveur has always had a global outlook so there are influences from all over the world. I was actually a bit annoyed that this great book will compete with a couple other favorites I have. I need to decide what to make next!

I love this cookbook! A great mix of traditional American and international recipes, and so many to choose from - this is not a small book! Everything I've made from it has had great results. Recipes are definitely a bit more difficult than beginner level, but certainly not unapproachable.

Being a longtime cookbook collector, I have to say this one is a keeper. Every recipe I've tried so far has been fantastic...the beef stroganoff, shepherd's pie and roast chicken to name a few. I will be enjoying these recipes for years to come...Thanks Saveur!!

When I was a student I had to go to the nearest university library to look up classical texts and translations in the Loeb editions. The publications of Delphi Classics are incredible. Both Greek and English texts for hardly any money. I also do find that it is quite easy to look up references found in books about the classics. That most English translations may be a bit old fashioned does not matter. In the beginning of the last century there were still a lot of scholars who were capable of doing this kind of translation and they were willing to spend years to finish it.

This IS NOT the complete works. For example it lacks the important 'Ancient Customs of the Spartans'.

Good for both leaning what he thought on many subjects and as a reference for the many subjects he postulated on over his lifetime.

For the price... just amazing!!!!Now, for my part I intend to read and make part of myself all of it,and be a better man!!!
