My 10 year old daughter and I read this book together. She was so excited when the movie came out and she had to have more so I quickly went online and found the books. We purchased this book as well as the Descendants (junior novel). This book gives you a in-depth look at the Descendants and shows how the foursome actually came together. It also gives you little snippets of Ben and what he is having to learn on his way to becoming king. We enjoyed every moment of this story which is hard to do with the attention of a 10 year old. I just wish Disney would have used Melissa de la Cruz to write the full novel for the actual Descendants movie. Do not purchase the Descendants (junior novel) it is word for word copy of the script minus the songs.

The Isle of the Lost is a book about Villains who were banished from Auradon to The Isle of the lost. The Main character, Mal, is the daughter of Maleficent and she is very cruel and plays mean pranks on a new girl in school. The author of the book displayed the book in such a way that each character got their own chapter, but it is pointed out that everyone is afraid of Mal and she liked it. In my opinion, it was very hard to understand. I am only ten years old so older people might understand the book more. The author used big words and kind of went all over the place. I am at a little higher reading level than most ten year olds so keep that in mind too. This book is not at all like the movie "Descendants" or "Descendants 2". the characters are the same but their personality and the plot is very different. Overall, the book was okay but i will not get the next one.

It's 1of the best books . There's a lot of fun adventures .In the beginning it's nice to see the background of mal and how hard it is for her not to be invited to this princesses party . So malifecent like says to the princesses and her mom you will rue the day you didn't invite my daughter to your party .your dead to the island you will never set foot into the light again. Ever since I was a little girl I have always been a fan of all things Disney. So when I heard that one of my favorite teen authors Melissa wrote a series about the children of disney villains I knew I had to read it! As with other De La Cruz novels I think Melissa did a great job of developing her characters and settings so that you really felt you were there experiencing the same thing as the kids. In addition, I did enjoy how she incorporated the villains a little bit too and had you learn things about them that you would not have known from watching/reading their appropriate stories.If there were any items that I felt that could have been changed or short end I would have to say that she could have spent less time leading up to their journey. I think that there was too much time spent on Mal trying to get back at Evie than needed to be. In addition, I also felt like she could have left out or minimized the amount of time she referred to characters that lived Auradon. I think it didn't make sense to keep on jumping between locations as there were no connection between them and the Isle of the Lost characters.All in all I thought this was a great start to the series and I can't wait to watch the move coming up on July 31st. I think this story will grab readers who enjoy disney because you get to see these characters from a different perspective.

We bought this book because my daughter LOVES Descendants and we had already read the two novels based on the movies. This book is good. It's got some clever scenes, with a play on the fairy tale characters (like the secondary characters demanding some more rights from the soon-to-be King Ben) and it also reveals how Mal and Evie went from disliking each other to become the buddies that we see on TV in Descendants 1. My daughter was 7 when we bought the book, and that seems to be the audience for Descendants, but the vocabulary in this book is much more advanced. So to me, this is definitely a parent/child read--which was fun. I love children's books. We will probably check out the next book too.

Purchased for daughter who is an avid reader and huge Disney Freak! She will love it regardless of any depth or lack thereof.I haven't given it to her yet, but I am reading it with my son at bedtime. (Okay, I'm reading it for myself, but it works very well at putting him to sleep.) He wants to know how did these villains even have children in the first place? (Because, let's face it, who would be willing to make babies with any of the villains? Talk about a nightmare of an Ex!)Did they conjure up the kids in the cauldron in the dungeon? Or did they at least conjure up the other absent (and in true Disney fashion, probably dead) parent?All that aside, true Disney fans will enjoy the book.

I read this before the Disney Channel movie "Descendants" debuted in 2015. I am so glad I did! A lot of the movie plots made so much more sense because I knew the background stories and motivations. If you haven't seen the movie yet (which picks up where the book ends), you need to read this book first! Your movie experience will be so much better!!I should also mention that I loved how the author wrote this book by voicing different chapters from the perspective of the four main characters.

A pre-film view of life on the island. It showed us how the friendship between the four villian kids came about, although they can't admit to being friends because that would be nice. The Beast King and his policies don't come off very well. There can be toxens in various molds the islanders are forced to eat. The reaction of a person's body to these poisons can affect how they act. The policies are short sighted and vendictive, feeding the people garbage seems counterproductive. Punishment over reabilitation. The background of the kids going to school, Mal throwing a party and Mal's quest take up most of the book. The quest proves that Mal is her mother's daughter although neither seems to realize it. The curse doesn't effect her because of her bloodline but her mother would rather comment on Mal's descision not to expose the others to the curse. Good on you Mal!

I am a 13 year old boy (using his mom's account with her permission to post a review) and yes I have read all of Robert Beatty's books but none of them were quite like Willa of the Wood. Willa was different than Serafina in alot of ways but was still an easy to love character. The story was enthralling and made me want to turn the page and read more. There were no dull moments and the entire story was worth every minute I took to read it. I actually read the entire book in less than 24 hours and I stayed up all night reading and no, I don't usually binge read books! Actually this was my first binge read. I know some boys are turned away from books because the main character is female but I think this should be an exception regardless of your gender. Mr. Beatty does not write like any other authors, the way he writes draws you into the story hook, line and sinker! He weaves a tale and you can personally relate to the characters and by the end you feel like you were a part of the story. I also recommend the Serafina Series written by Mr. Robert Beatty.

I received an advanced reader copy of Willa of the Wood which is the first of a new series for middle school students written by author Robert Beatty.Mr. Beatty shares Willa’s perspective as he weaves a magical story that blends the life of this young night spirit into the rich local history of the Great Smoky Mountains and the Cherokee people. Willa lives with her 137-year-old mamaw who is one of the last surviving woodwitches from the dwindling clan of Faeran people. This 12-year-old girl has the ability to blend into her forest surroundings and can communicate with nature. Willa has a great respect for her heritage and is determined to preserve the old ways of her clan.In the beginning of this action-packed mystery, Willa unwillingly has become her clan’s best thief. I continue to think about the lake that “. . . felt as if the light of the sun had become liquid . . .”  I strongly recommend this book as an especially great read aloud for families or classroom use. The fact that my kids beg and plead for me to read another chapter of this book every night and are willing to forego TV so I can read more to them warrants 5 stars. Plus, Robert Beatty is a beautiful writer to the point you can visualize the scenes in each chapter.However, I feel conflicted as a parent when it comes to the content. This book, while it does contain some good, well-written and moving messages about family, hope, overcoming fear and love, it also has some very dark and disturbing parts including violence, kidnapping, abuse, and murder, all of which frankly, make me feel like a marginal parent - kind of like giving my kids a Snickers bar for dinner when I should be offering a salad (just a hypothetical here).So, in truthfulness, I struggle with whether the content of the book is outweighed by the fact that my kids’ passion for reading and constant discussion and chatter about what they think will happen next in the book has been sparked by this author, darker content and all.Parents know their kids best, but the jury is still out for me. I definitely think this author is best for the tween or older crowd, although I know my 8 year olds would vehemently disagree!

As I was sitting in my chair, with my black cat Serafina in my lap. I have to admit that I was somewhat disappointed that Beatty's new book "Willa of the Wood" would be introducing a new character and it would not be a continuation of the Serafina stories. However, as I began to read I realized that this was going to be an amazing adventure! With the same descriptive detail that Beatty described the Biltmore Estate, he has continued this with his depiction of Willa and the world in which she lives. Willa is an ever-changing and lovable little spirit. Her daily life is full of sadness,chaos, and unimaginable circumstances. Willa is able to overcome these obstacles with the gifts from the forest, courageous animals, and love.The story has as many twists and turns as the river that flows through the forest.To my surprise, I did recognize an old friend or two along the journey! When you think all is lost, something happens and changes Willa's life forever, so have a tissue in hand, After reading this book, I can't decide which character I want to hear more about next...either way I know I won't be disappointed. Can't wait!

Most of Alan Moore's most famous works are a critique of the superhero genre: "V for Vendetta" critiques the British system and an anarchistic response to it, "The Watchmen" critique the American culture of superheroes as liberal visionaries or right-wing vigilantes in the context of the cold war. This continues this critique but by referencing the 19th century literature, both classic and pulp. Indeed, Moore seems to be pointing out that the line there was always thin. In the context of the British Empire, Moore shows that heroes are basically imperialists. Furthermore, in a similar vein to "the Watchmen," most of the characters are much more morally problematic than their literary counterparts. Having a background in 19th century British literature helps: Bram Stoker's "Dracula," Jules Verne's "20,000 Leagues Beneath the Sea," H. Rider Haggard's "King Solomon's Mines," Robert Louis Stevenson's "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and H. G. Wells' "The Invisible Man" build the context of the main characters, and the personalities do seem rooted in the books. Knowing Ian Flemming's James Bond and Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes' characters help as well. The art is very driven by pulp art as well as Victoriana in general. That said, the empire may not be all it seems and so too the problems of the precursors to comic books. This volume is a fairly straight ahead story as far as Moore is concerned, although the literary references build very quickly. At a surface level, this is not a subtle comic, but it works much more deeply in dialogue with its source material and with culture of superheroes: a genre that Moore seems to work in only to undermine.

Like so many of the other reviewers here, I really was looking forward to this volume and wanted so badly to like it after the 1st volume was so much fun and excitement. I loved the Victorian, Steampunk setting of the LXG vol 1 and thought it was a well-constructed, character-building adventure. Volume 2.......not so much. THERE BE SPOILERS AHEAD! For starters, this one begins on Mars with some other Victorian era characters that are basically there as cameos and the Mars prologue adds almost nothing to the rest of the story beyond the amusing references. As for the main story, well, I suppose if you are a huge War of the Worlds fan then you will like this one fairly well because it follows a lot of that story rather closely adapting the characters/situations to fit a little better along the way. There are some other interesting references such as a certain French doctor, and Mr Hyde really shines in character development, but unfortunately that's about all of the good in the volume.The biggest problem in the volume is that the members of the league spend about 3/4 of their 'on screen' time doing virtually nothing. The characters (aside from Hyde) act out of character with treachery from one, a sudden bizarre romance that really doesn't fit from 2 others, and a Nemo that inexplicably goes from one extreme to the other at times. Also you'd think a Mars invasion would provide quite a bit of excitement, but instead of the LXG heroically battling the enemy, the vast bulk of their time is spent seeing them walk around in forests and fields or just standing around arguing with each other. The only real action after the prologue is in the final chapter and even then the LXG has very little impact on the final battle against the martians.With a weak plot that is largely ripped from War of the Worlds, minimal impact from the main characters, and out of place character actions (as well as the ponderous, dull prose Almanac at the volumes end), I cannot recommend this volume to anyone except those who are hardcore steampunk, Victorian, Allan Moore, or LXG fans that just have to see all that is LXG. The reason that I consider this about a 2-2.5 instead of 1 is that the artwork is top-notch. I loved the look of the first volume and you will see the same essential style here. The panels look great, but the story and dialogue that fill them are rather lackluster.

Framing the story around Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels, Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars, and H.G Well's War of the Worlds, the tropes of alien exploration are invoked and explored in the context of the League. Moore continues his critique of both British imperialism and pulp heroism against that backdrop as the darker elements of the League's main characters continue to manifest with often extremely bloody outcomes. The introduction of another of Well's creations, Dr. Moreau and his creatures, end up having profound implications for the most brutal utilitarian calculus of the Empire and military intelligence.This volume starts the beginning of the dividing line for those who linked the first volume, and the victory does come at a high cost. The dividing line seems to come because the full implication of the nastier bits of key characters personalities do bare fruit. Moore capitalizes on our seeming familiarity--both the pulp, literary, and in-world comic versions--more completely than in the first volume, and this has dramatic impact on the story.In many ways, the surface reading of this comic will seem fairly simple if depraved in parts. However, the implications about who the Heroes are actually are and what they actually serve is very interesting. O'Neil's art is strong, and he plays with the genre tropes very skillfully. There is a woodcut and pulp illustration quality to work which O'Neil sheds in latter volumes that move the story more contemptuously in time. In many ways, the League's disillusionment mirrors the disillusionment approaching at the end of the Victorian era. In many ways, this is Moore and O'Neil in peak form.

It also broke my heart in many ways. It is difficult to look into the dark corners of evil that occupy some, but Tim helps to make the journey palatable.

A must read for everyone! It helped me wake up to the realities of human slavery today and made me appreciate the heros in history and today that rescue people from human trafficking. It’s real, please read this. It’s written in a way that explains it simply and clearly and didn’t leave me depressed but instead gave me hope and motivation to reach out and help in any way I can. It gave me gratitude for Tim Ballard and his team of heroes!

This is not the typical book on Kindle and was an absolute waste of money. The word search is practically useless because the page #'s are not referenced by their # in the Kindle, but rather by the hard-cover book. Meaning, if I needed to find the commentary on "Kings, Book of," I could do a word search on the same, and it would provide every reference for "Kings, Book of." If it tells me that it's on page 473, that reference is to the hardcover book - not the Kindle. Instead, the Kindle page # would be something like 25,682.

With just a little effort, this valuable resource could have been made usable and accessible. As it is, it takes more time to find anything than it is worth. Why not provide the article index (which inexplicably is not included in the Kindle version . . . along with the subject index and other end material that would have helped) with links to the articles themselves? A truly awful implementation of a valuable work. I would suggest spending your money on the hard copy, which you can actually use.

In a pastor or a Scholars Library, usually the first Works purchased or commentaries, followed by practical works with only a second thought towards biblical dictionaries and encyclopedias. This could not be a worse process of thinking, for dictionaries specifically those produced in the series titled, the IVP Bible Dictionary series, for this is a top-notch and needed addition to a basic pastor set of works as well as a scholars library. I was first introduced to this series in seminary, and have found them deeply insightful and for the most part theologically sound and great aides in understanding complex parts of scripture. In this work, the dictionary of the Old Testament prophets, edited by Bill T. Arnold and H.G.M. Williamson, the books of the Historical Books, both minor and major, are explored with specific focus on various imagery and interpretation. This work has a truly wide scope in explaining views that are out in the world, both Orthodox an unorthodox as well as types of criticism, tradition and interpretation, and various hermeneutical issues which need to be addressed. I specifically found those dealing with textual criticism and motifs to be quite enjoyable and insightful in my teaching of the book of Judges. It is highly scholarly, this work will be of use to a pastor who has some foundations in studying that of views that differ with his or with views that would broaden his horizons. Well I have said that I give her with a few views in this work specifically that of the feminist interpretation of scripture, editor's Arnold and Williamson do a phenomenal job of eating the reader in their understanding of the work of the Historical Books. I therefore recommend this as a purchase to both pastors and Scholars if they have the money to purchase this what can be expensive volume in the phenomenal, IVP Bible dictionary series. You will not be disappointed. I received this work from IVP Academic, for the purpose of an unbiased review.

IVP (InterVarsity Press) has a reputation for publishing quality scholarship in the fields of Theology and Biblical Studies. The IVP Bible Dictionary Series is no exception. Dictionary of the Old Testament: Historical Books is the second of IVP's series on the Hebrew Bible (the first: Dictionary of the Old Testament: Pentatuch). IVP mostly utilizes conservative Christian scholars for the articles that comprise their dictionaries. However, often material is gathered for those articles from sources throughout Christian and Judaic scholarship. Also, each entry provides a bibliography referencing a wide range of sources for further study. Those who are interested in New Testament studies should also check out IVP's New Testament volumes in this same series, The IVP Dictionary of Theology, and Dictionary of Biblical Imagery. I personally own all of these and am awaiting the remaining, yet to be published, volumes in the Hebrew Bible series.
